BASS Northern Tour: Kentucky Lake, KY

Tour Event # 1 of 5

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

Day 1: Lashlee Leads The Northern Tour Opener

Sam LashleeGILBERTSVILLE, Ky. – In pro fishing, there is no substitute for experience. Using a wealth of knowledge developed over many years of fishing Kentucky Lake, Sam Lashlee put together a more than 3 pound lead over fellow Tennessean Donald Cordle at the opening event of the CITGO Bassmaster Northern Tour.

Lashlee, who on Thursday boated a limit that weighed 23 pounds, 13 ounces, led a star-studded Tour field, which will cut to the top 50 after Friday’s competition. The field includes seven CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series anglers; Woo Daves, who is the 2000 CITGO Bassmaster Classic champion; and two noteworthy Federation Nation anglers: South African Anré de Villiers and Colorado’s Joe Conway, both of whom qualified for the 2006 CITGO Bassmaster Classic via the 2006 Federation Nation National Championship.

“Experience plays a big part in fishing,” said Lashlee, who just two weeks ago won a national tournament on Kentucky Lake. “I know where the sweet spots are and what baits to use (for) the conditions, and that is something that plays into my favor.”

The 44-year-old from Camden, Tenn., estimates he has fished Kentucky Lake as many as 200 times in one year. His experience propelled him to the lead, but getting there wasn’t easy: Thursday he persevered through boat trouble and a pounding hail storm that robbed him of nearly two hours of fishing.

Using a variety of lures in 6 to 8 feet of water — a crankbait, a football jig and a black-grape worm — Lashlee targeted shallow ledges that contained gravel and stumps. Falling for his crankbait was a 7-pound bass that was Thursday’s Purolator Big Bass, earning Lashlee a $1,000 bonus.

“The fish were concentrated in shallower water than I thought they would be,” Lashlee said. “The lake was pulling a lot of current and it seems to me that the fish are moving shallow, and that is where I will start tomorrow.”

Also using experience to his advantage was Cordle, who boated 20 pounds, 4 ounces of bass. He estimated that he has visited the fishery nearly 700 times in five years.

Throwing a worm, Cordle said he targeted smooth ledges in 5 to 10 feet of water on Lake Barkley, which along with Kentucky Lake comprises the tournament waters of the Tour event.

“I know what I have to do the next two days,” Cordle said. “If it (a win) is in the cards, then it will happen.”

Rounding out the top five on the pro side were Kentucky’s Shawn Penn (19-15), Tennessee’s Jason Sain (18-6) and Kentucky’s Rodney Brown (18-3).

On the co-angler side, Alabama’s Rob Lee led his division after catching a three-fish limit for a Day 1 weight of 10 pounds, 10 ounces. Lee leads Illinois anglers Brad Bruns (9-10) and Jason Farrell (9-7). Whichever angler emerges as the winner on Saturday will go home with the co-angler top prize of a Triton boat package valued at $30,000.

Also on Thursday, Elite Series angler Doc Merkin was disqualified from the Kentucky Lake Northern Tour event because he violated Rule 3.i.

Pros are fishing for a total prize purse of $324,650. The champion pro will take home $30,000 in cash and a fully rigged Triton boat valued at $45,000. Co-anglers are competing for a total prize purse of $68,800.

Day 2: Lashlee Holds on by Ounces

Sam LashleeGILBERTSVILLE, Ky. – By just 6 ounces, local favorite Sam Lashlee clung to the lead of the CITGO Bassmaster Northern Tour on Friday. Fellow Tennessee pro Jason Sain trimmed Lashlee’s margin tying for the biggest bag of the day: 18 pounds, 2 ounces.

Lashlee, who brought in 13 pounds, 1 ounce Friday for a two-day total of 36 pounds, 14 ounces, characterized Friday’s fishing as “rough, a struggle.” He said he had just one fish by 10:30 a.m., but soon after turned it around at one productive spot, where he built his five-fish limit.

“It is unbelievably tough out there,” said the 44-year-old, who regularly fishes the tournament waters of Kentucky and Barkley lakes. “The spots I visited are usually productive. (But) the fish tightened up and the bigger fish just weren’t biting. But that is part of it and I will have to dig deep (Saturday) and fish hard.”

The field was cut to the top 50 for Saturday’s finale. The winner will take home a Triton boat package valued at $45,000 and nearly $30,000 in cash. The total tournament purse is $324,650.

Much like Lashlee, Sain caught most of his fish late in the day. Schooling fish were the key to propelling him from his Day 1 fourth-place finish to second place on Friday. The Beechgrove, Tenn., angler said he fished offshore ledges of Lake Barkley, and caught the majority of his fish on his “confidence bait” — a Strike King Series 5 chartreuse-and-blue crankbait.

“My end result was certainly better than I expected,” Sain said. “The clouds affected the bite. I am looking forward to that sun shining tomorrow.”

Finishing Friday more than 2 pounds behind Lashlee and Sain were Kentucky’s Rodney Brown (34-2), Tennessee’s Donald Cordle (33-15) and Kentucky’s Harold Knight (33-6).

Paul Mazzitelli of Pittston, Pa., and Derek Remitz of Hemphill, Texas, tied for the day’s Purolator Big Bass award when both weighed in a 5-pound, 3-ounce bass. Each earned $500 for bringing in the largest bass on the pro side.

On the co-angler side, Day 1 leader Rob Lee of Deatsville, Ala., held on to the top spot with a catch of 8 pounds even. His two-day total of 18 pounds, 10 ounces, led Maryland’s Joshua Fiedler (18-3) and Kentucky’s Wayne Luckett (17-12). Co-anglers are competing for a total prize purse of $68,800, including the top prize of a Triton boat package valued at $30,000.

Co-angler Carl Pope of Kentucky scored a $400 bonus with Friday’s Purolator Big Bass, a 6-pound, 5-ounce bass.

Also on Friday, co-angler Mike Goessman’s Day 2 catch was disqualified for violation of Rule 14. The applicable part of the rule states: “Partners must remain together at all times, in sight of each other and each other’s catch, under the conditions cited above, in order for their catch of that day to be scored in the tournament.”

Goessman was also disqualified from the tournament for violating Rule 2. The applicable part of that rule states: “Anglers shall, at all times, conduct themselves in a manner becoming professional anglers that will not reflect unfavorably on BASS, its members, officers or representatives, tournaments or sponsors.”

Day 3: Sain Notches Northern Tour Win

Jason SainGILBERTSVILLE, Ky. – With only minutes left in his fishing day, Tennessee pro Jason Sain boated a 2-pound bass. It was exactly enough fish for the win at the CITGO Bassmaster Northern Tour event on Kentucky Lake on Saturday.

His 49-pound, 9-ounce tournament total bested Donald Cordle’s final weight by 2 pounds even, and was 2 pounds, 1 ounce more than the three-day weight of local favorite and Friday leader Sam Lashlee of Camden, Tenn.

Sain estimated he fished his final spot for three minutes. His decision to run to the spot proved lucrative: The 32-year-old earned a top prize of a Triton boat package valued at $45,000 and nearly $25,000 in cash.

“This is the highlight of my fishing career,” said Sain, who works as a mason when he is not fishing. “I am just thankful that I made the decision to stop at that last spot. That won the tournament for me.”

With several other tournaments running at the same time on Kentucky Lake as the three-day Tour, Sain and the other 49 Tour anglers had to contend with heavy boat traffic on Saturday. Anticipating the pressure for hot spots, Sain made a 35-mile trek to Barkley Lake, which along with Kentucky Lake comprised the tournament waters. The Beechgrove, Tenn., angler had fished Kentucky Lake the first two days of competition.

“Making the decision to move to Lake Barkley today was huge,” said Sain, whose tournament experience includes ESPN Outdoors Bassmaster Series presented by Advance Auto Parts events in 2005 and 2006.

Much like the majority of the field, Sain targeted offshore ledges with a variety of lures — a big worm, a creature bait, and a crankbait — in 10 feet of water.

Second-place finisher Cordle of Brentwood, Tenn., said that despite missing out on the win, he was satisfied with how he fished.

“I was shooting for a top-five finish at this tournament so I’m happy with the way it ended,” said the 36-year-old.

One ounce behind Cordle was Lashlee, who jumped out to a commanding 3-pound-plus lead after Thursday. The 44-year-old ultimately faltered on his hometown waters and lamented a 5-pound fish he lost on the final day.

“That is the way fishing goes,” Lashlee said, who won a national tournament on the waters just weeks ago. “I have no complaints and no excuses though. The fish didn’t bite as well as I thought they would these past two days.”

Missouri’s Scott Campbell (46-15) moved up to fourth place with one of the biggest bags of the day: 14 pounds, 12 ounces. Kentucky’s Rodney Brown rounded out the top five with 46 pounds, 11 ounces.

On the co-angler side, Rob Lee won his division in wire-to-wire fashion, boating 26 pounds, 10 ounces, of bass over three days. The Deatsville, Ala., angler held off Kentucky’s Wayne Luckett (25-6) and Maryland’s Joshua Fiedler (24-4). Lee’s first prize was a Triton boat package valued at $30,000.

The Kentucky Lake event was the first of five on the 2006 CITGO Bassmaster Northern Tour. The next stop for the Northern Tour anglers is Fort Madison, Iowa, and the Mississippi River, July 20-22.
