BASS Southern Tour: Lake Lanier, GA

Tour Event # 5 of 5

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

Day 1: David Nichol Leads Southern Tour on Lanier

Dave NicholGAINESVILLE, Ga. – Local angler David Nichol of Gainesville, Ga., took the Day 1 lead on Thursday in the fifth and final event of the 2006 CITGO Bassmaster Southern Tour.

On a day that proved to be tough for the majority of the field — only 28 five-fish limits were brought to the scales by the 137 pros — Nichol reeled in an impressive bag of 16 pounds, 9 ounces.

“I did a little better than I expected,” said Nichol, 46. “I hadn’t fished my key places in practice, but they did well today.” He said he fished a deep-water pattern on Thursday, but was tight-lipped about specifics.

Nichol, who grew up on the lake, said he’s fished it his entire life, but was quick to add that he didn’t feel his home-lake advantage was enough for a sure win. “The tournament is far from over,” he said. The Lanier Tour Stop is Nichol’s first BASS event.

Casey Ashley, 22, of Donalds, S.C., finished Day 1 in second place with 14 pounds, 14 ounces. Ashley said he flipped jigs near boat docks the entire day for his mixed bag of spotted and largemouth bass.

“I had my limit by 10 a.m., and then the bite went dry for about four hours,” said Ashley. “Then this afternoon the fish turned back on like a light switch.”

Sam Harris of Bogart, Ga., and Paul Driskell of Jefferson, Ga., were tied for third place with 13 pounds, 6 ounces. Harris said he made long casts into vegetation using hard baits and soft plastics. “I caught fish from 2 feet to 20 feet and everywhere in between,” he noted.

Clark Reehm of Leesville, La., rounded out the top five with 13 pounds, 3 ounces.

Among the pros fishing the Lake Lanier Tour event are five who also are CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series Anglers: Florida’s Mark Rogers; current Southern Tour points leader Terry Scroggins of Florida; Alabama’s Timmy Horton; North Carolina’s Kevin Langill; and Florida’s Chris Lane. Only Rogers was in the top 50 after Day 1.

On the co-angler side, Ron Cochran of Maysville, Ga., took the Day 1 lead with his catch of 9 pounds, 11 ounces. Close on his heels was Sam Moss of Ackerman, Miss., with 9-8. Three Georgia anglers rounded out the top five: Terry Mintz with 8-9, Shaun Mulhall with 8-8 and Brad Benfield with 6-10.

Anglers on the pro side are vying for a first-place payout of $30,000 in cash and a Triton boat rig worth $45,000. Co-anglers are up against each other for a top prize of a Triton boat package valued at $30,000. Total payout for the tournament is $324,650 in cash and merchandise to the top 60 pros; the top 50 co-anglers share a payout of $68,800 in prizes.

The field cuts to the top 50 anglers and top 50 co-anglers for Saturday’s competition.

The Lake Lanier Tour is the final stop on the five-event 2006 CITGO Bassmaster Southern Tour. Throughout the season, pros have been building points toward qualifying for the 2007 CITGO Bassmaster Classic and the next level of competition, the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series. On Saturday, when the Southern Tour’s season points standings are final, the three Classic berths will be awarded to the top three pros, and the top five points leaders will have earned eligibility for next year’s Elite circuit.

Day 2: Georgia Anglers Dominate Day 2 on Lanier

Ryan ColemanGAINESVILLE, Ga. – Lake Lanier guide Ryan Coleman, 39, of Flowery Branch, Ga., surged into the Day 2 lead of the CITGO Bassmaster Southern Tour on Lake Lanier with a big bag of spotted bass that pushed his two-day total to 28-5.

With his Friday catch of 18 pounds, 6 ounces, he jumped to first from his 18th place Thursday finish, the event’s first day.

“I made some adjustments and moved from shallow water to deep water — that was the biggest key,” said Coleman.

A full-time guide on Lanier, Coleman said he covered a lot of water Friday to uncover the honey hole that produced his two biggest fish, both spotted bass. One weighed 4-6 and the other 4-5. He said he fished water 40 to 50 feet deep.

Coleman’s lead was only 10 ounces ahead of Trent Gober, 33, of Pendergrass, Ga., who moved up into second place with a two-day total of 27-11. Like Coleman, Gober brought in a five-fish limit —all spots — that he said was in his livewell by 10 a.m. Also like Coleman, Gober fished water 40 to 50 feet deep.

An experienced Lanier angler, Gober said he fishes his home lake nearly 100 times a year. One of four Georgians in Friday’s top five, Gober said he believes in the home-lake advantage. “The locals are going to dominate every time,” he said. “It’s a deep, clear lake and it’s hard to catch them.”

Day 1 leader David Nichol of Gainesville, Ga., slipped to third with a Friday catch of 9 pounds for a two-day total of 25-9.

“I had some good fish, but I just had a bad-luck day,” said Nichol. “I’m fishing hardwood timber deep, on 8-pound line. When the fish get wrapped up (in the wood), it’s over.”

In fourth was Casey Ashley of Donalds, S.C., with 24-1. In fifth was Mathew Wilbanks of Gainesville, Ga., with 21-0.

On the co-angler side, Shaun Mulhall of McDonough, Ga., moved up from fourth to the top of the Day 2 leaderboard with a catch of 7-7, which brought his two-day total to 15-15. Sam Moss of Ackerman, Miss., whose two-day total was 14-9, held onto second-place. Terry Mintz of Clermont, Ga., was in third with 12-10; Brad Benfield of Demorest, Ga., was in fourth with 11-7; and tied for fifth with 10-13 were Nathan Smith of Gillsville, Ga., and Heath Pack of Mineral Bluff, Ga.

Pros are competing for a first-place payout of $30,000 in cash and a Triton boat rig worth $45,000. Co-anglers are up against each other for a top prize of a Triton boat package valued at $30,000.

The Lake Lanier event is the fifth and final stop of the 2006 CITGO Bassmaster Southern Tour.

The field was cut Friday to the top 50 anglers and top 50 co-anglers for Saturday’s competition. Not only will a tournament winner be decided at Saturday’s weigh-in, but also three winners of a coveted 2007 CITGO Bassmaster Classic berth. They will be the first three berths to be determined for the February 2007 event on Lay Lake in Alabama.

Throughout the season, Southern Tour pros have been building points toward qualifying for the Classic as well as for the next level of competition, the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series.

Going into the Lanier event, Terry Scroggins of Palatka, Fla., who also fishes as a CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series pro, was the Southern Tour points leader. Just three points behind Scroggins was James Niggemeyer of Lindale, Texas. Holding third in the points standings was Elite Series pro Chris Lane of Winter Haven, Fla.

Day 3: Ryan Coleman Reels in His First BASS Victory

Ryan ColemanGAINESVILLE, Ga. – Ryan Coleman of Flowery Branch, Ga., tapped into his Lake Lanier guiding experience to win the 2006 CITGO Bassmaster Southern Tour event on Lake Lanier on Saturday.

Coleman, 39, captured his first BASS win with 36 pounds, 10 ounces of spotted bass, a three-day total that was nearly 3 pounds more than his closest competitor, Mathew Wilbanks of Gainesville, Ga.

“This is just incredible,” said Coleman. “I never thought I would have won with what I caught today.” His Saturday catch was 8-5, but his 28-5 weight over the first two days of the tournament carried him through to earn about $25,000 in cash and a Triton boat rig with Mercury outboard worth $45,000.

Coleman said he caught his five-fish limit by drop-shotting with a Spotsticker prototype worm made by D&G Spotsticker Baits. He said he concentrated on standing timber about 40 feet down.

Wilbanks, 33, climbed steadily into second from his Day 1 finish of 21st and Day 2 finish of fifth. His three-day total was 33-13. Like most of his fellow Georgia competitors, Wilbanks said he fished a drop shot rig in water 25 to 45 feet deep.

Trent Gober, 33, of Pendergrass, Ga., took third place with a three-day total of 32-4. Casey Ashley, 22, of Donalds, S.C., finished fourth with 31-13. In fifth was Paul Marks of Cumming, Ga., with 29 pounds, 13 ounces.

In the co-angler division, the top prize of a Triton boat package valued at $30,000 was won by Shaun Mulhall, 33, of McDonough, Ga. A branch manager of a wholesale distribution company, Mulhall brought only one fish to the scales on Saturday, but it brought his three-day total up to 17-1. Mulhall, who led on Day 2, held off Ron Cochran of Maysville, Ga., who finished in second place with 15-11. Cochran led the co-angler division on the first day, fell to 10th on the second day, then recovered nicely for the runner-up spot.

Rounding out the top five co-anglers were Mark Richard of Bridge City, La., with 14-13; Sam Moss of Ackerman, Miss., with 14-9; and Nathan Smith of Gillsville, Ga., with 13-14.

The Lake Lanier stop was the final of five events on the 2006 CITGO Bassmaster Southern Tour.
