Preview: Anglers Prepare to 'Battle on the Border'

Bassmaster Elite SeriesCELEBRATION, Fla. — Very few events in the long history of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society have created more excitement than the season-opener of the new CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series, the “Battle on the Border” on March 9-12 on Lake Amistad in Texas.

The reasons for this nearly unprecedented anticipation?

• The Battle will launch the Elite Series, a new, lucrative premier circuit featuring 106 accomplished anglers who have earned the opportunity to compete in 11 high-profile events and possibly qualify for the three Majors, which offer a first-place prize of $250,000.

• BASS is visiting Lake Amistad for the first time.

• Pre-tournament scouting forays have convinced pros that they will be visiting a superb fishery at a peak time of the year.

“It will be the greatest tournament in BASS history,” said Zell Rowland, a veteran pro from the Houston area. “If I was in a wheelchair and could not walk I would still be there.

“You can get a 20-pound bag anyway you want to catch them. The four-day (BASS) record is toast.”

The stage is set for the 67,000-acre Texas/Mexico border lake to provide a tournament for the record books. An impoundment of three rivers – the Rio Grande, Pecos and Devils – it is full of prime bass habitat including hydrilla, points, coves, flooded brush, timber, rocky shorelines, inlets, submerged ledges, boulders and drop-offs that go as deep as 200 feet.

And the Elite pros will be there during both pre-spawn and spawning season when the biggest bass move shallow and become their most accessible of the year.

“The conditions are perfect for us,” said Edwin Evers of Oklahoma, who moved into fourth place on the Bassmaster Elite Series Power Index following the CITGO Bassmaster Classic. “I could have 20 7-pound bass right off the bat. That wouldn’t be a problem.”

Recent fishing results support such bold statements. Local angler Tom Sutherland broke the lake record with a 15-11 largemouth. And some five-bass winning tournament catches have pushed 40 pounds.

Daily weigh-ins will begin at 3 p.m. at the Del Rio Civic Center, 1915 Civic Center, in Del Rio and are free to the public. The daily launches will take place at Diablo West Marina at 6:30 a.m.

Day 1: Cook Leads the Pack on Day 1

Ken CookDEL RIO, Texas — After months of anticipation, 106 of the world’s top professional anglers launched the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series with the “Battle on the Border Presented by Mercury Marine” on Lake Amistad, dubbed the No. 1 bass fishery in the nation, according to ESPN2’s BassCenter.

Those who couldn’t attend in person can catch the Battle on the Border - the first in an 11-event, $7.4 million tournament series - on ESPN2’s The CITGO Bassmasters on Saturday, March 18, at 10 a.m. ET.

Anglers fought high winds and choppy waters to bring in nearly 20 sacks weighing more than 25 pounds. Several pros reported breaking their personal best records in a BASS event as well.

Six-time BASS tournament winner Ken Cook of Meers, Okla., who is ranked 73rd on the Bassmaster Elite Series Power Index, brought in a five-fish limit weighing 31 pounds, 10 ounces Thursday, securing the Day 1 lead by two ounces.

“This is the biggest bag I’ve weighed in at a BASS tournament,” said Cook. “I felt confident in practice, but to take the lead is just awesome.”

Cook threw a swimbait in shallow flats and keyed in on schooling fish. He caught all of his fish in two 50-yard stretches, which he will seek out again on Friday. Cook’s sack also was the BUSCH Heavyweight of the Day, earning him a $1,000 bonus. If it remains one of the 10 heaviest in Elite Series season, he will qualify for the BUSCH Shootout later in the year.

Matt Reed, 43, of Madisonville, Texas, was in second place with 31-8. The one-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic qualifier, who is ranked 22nd on the Power Index, focused on sight fishing and threw both spinnerbaits and Senkos.

“I am having a blast,” said Reed. “I fished my area today harder than I would have because of the wind. But, I am happy. The wind didn’t hurt me; it just made me change location.”

Currently ranked 53rd on the Power Index, Pete Ponds of Madison, Miss., was in third with 31 pounds, 7 ounces. He said the sack – which included a 10-5 largemouth that earned him the Purolator Big Bass bonus of $1,000 - was the largest he has ever caught in a BASS tournament.

Rounding out the top five were Terry Segraves of Kissimmee, Fla., with 30-6 and Michael Iaconelli of Runnemede, N.J., with 30-5.

In the co-angler division, Texans led the race. Allan Chandler of Cat Spring is in first with a three-fish limit of 14-2. He was followed by Houston’s Mark Wright with 13-15 in second and Gordon Karstedt of Pearland with 13-10 in third.

Day 2: Evers Takes Day 2 on Lake Amistad

Edwin EversDEL RIO, Texas — Light winds and sunny skies contributed to a leaderboard shake-up at the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series’ “Battle on the Border Presented by Mercury Marine” on Friday at Lake Amistad. After the last fish was weighed, Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., emerged as the Day 2 leader with a total of 55 pounds, 2 ounces.

With the possibility of record-breaking weights on the way, viewers can catch the first of the 11-event, $7.4 million tournament series on The CITGO Bassmasters aired Saturday, March 18th, on ESPN2 at 10 a.m. ET.

Evers, a three-time BASS tournament winner and ranked fourth on the Bassmaster Elite Series Power Index, brought in a five-fish limit of 29 pounds, 14 ounces for a total of 55-2. The creel sent him careening from 18th place to first. Now, Evers is on his way to breaking the BASS heaviest four-day weight of 108-12, set in 2001 by Dean Rojas on Lake Tohopekaliga in Kissimmee, Fla.

“That would be one heck of a record to break,” said Evers. “I’m just ecstatic. I hope I can do this well on the fourth day. I’m going to fish as hard as I know how to fish.”

Evers had “one heck of a rodeo” pulling in a 10-1 lunker that was cruising before he set the bait. Those baits included a variety of soft plastics he threw in water 5 to 15 feet deep.

Also making a big jump was two-time BASS winner and fifth-ranked Power Index angler Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., who went from 16th to second place Friday. Hackney brought in a five-fish limit of 28-15, fishing the same pattern as Day 1 but working his areas a little harder.

“I fished the way I intended to coming into this tournament,” said Hackney, 32. “I wasn’t able to fish as well yesterday because of the wind. I’m looking for cooler water and staying closer to the main lake. I just slowed down and worked my area a little harder.”

With consistency, Pete Ponds of Madison, Miss., held onto third place with a total of 54-5. “This was just an incredible day,” he said.

Ponds was confident he would catch fish, regardless of the amount of wind. He concentrated on two areas in water 14 to 17 feet deep and threw a crankbait, among others.

Four-time BASS winner Alton Jones of Waco, Texas, who is 42nd on the Power Index, was in fourth with 53-7 and Rojas, of Lake Havasu, Ariz., was in fifth with 53-4.

Also, 31st-place angler Jimmy Mize of Arkansas scored the BUSCH Heavyweight Bag of the Day with a five-fish limit of 31-14, earning a $1,000 bonus. If it remains one of the 10 heaviest in Elite Series season, Mize will qualify for the BUSCH Shootout later in the year.

Other notable anglers include ESPN2 BassCenter host Byron Velvick bringing up the rear of the field with 8-11 and BASS all-time money winner Kevin VanDam in 11th with 49-12. VanDam is seeking to hold his first-place position on the Power Index, which ranks anglers by their average weight caught at a tournament.

On the co-angler side, David Meza of San Jose, Calif., took the Day 2 lead with a total of 26 pounds, 5 ounces. He’s followed by Tommy Swindle of Alabama with 25-6 and Steven Oliver in third with 25 pounds. The co-angler division wraps up Saturday, with the field competing for $114,400 in cash and prizes.

Only the top 50 Elite pros will fish on Saturday. On Sunday, only the top 12 compete.

Day 3: West Coast Represents in Elite Series

Ish MonroeDEL RIO, Texas — Lake Amistad once again proved itself as one of the best fisheries in the world Saturday, as Ishama Monroe of Hughson, Calif., brought in 34 pounds, 1 ounce to take the Day 3 lead in the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series’ “Battle on the Border Presented by Mercury Marine”.

The Elite 12 fishing the final day on Sunday are gearing up to break records, and each is competing for the $100,000 top prize in the first of the 11-event, $7.4 million tournament series. Fishing fans can catch the action on The CITGO Bassmasters aired Saturday, March 18 on ESPN2 at 10 a.m. ET.

Monroe captured the lead with a 34-1 sack that hurled him from 19th to first place. He had a total weight of 81 pounds that offered a nearly 4-pound cushion for the angler and his next closest competitor, Michigan’s Kevin VanDam, who is the top-ranked angler on the Bassmaster Elite Series Power Index and had a total weight of 77-2.

“This is the first time I’ve led going into the final day,” said Monroe. “Today I swung for the fences and that’s what I’m going to do Sunday. Sometimes you swing and you hit grand slams.”

Monroe, currently 32nd on the Power Index, catching an average of 17-10 per tournament, fished new areas of the lake and keyed in on grass holes and edges.

Monroe’s five-fish limit also earned him the BUSCH Heavyweight Bag of the Day and a $1,000 bonus as well as the Purolator Big Bass $1,000 bonus for a 9-5 largemouth.

VanDam, who jumped from 11th to second place Saturday, caught 27-6, his largest sack of the tournament. “I’m catching a lot, but the big ones are hard to find,” said VanDam. “I need 30 pounds to win Sunday. This is too good of a lake and everyone here is too good of an angler – that’s why it’s going to be tight.”

Texan Matt Reed of Madisonville was in third with a three-day total of 76-12. The one-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic qualifier, who is ranked 22nd on the Power Index, looked for suspended fish and ran to 10 locations on the Texas border.

Alton Jones of Waco, Texas, and Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., were tied for fourth with 76-9 and Steve Kennedy of Auburn, Ala., was in sixth with 75-4.

On Sunday, only the top 12 Elite pros will fish. The others include Mike Reynolds of Modesto, Calif., (74-6); Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., (74-2); Fred Roumbanis of Auburn, Calif., (73-12); Gary Klein of Weatherford, Texas, (71-15); Ken Cook of Meers, Okla., (71-10); and Dean Rojas of Lake Havasu, Ariz., (71-06).

In the co-angler division, Allen Ruddick of Las Cruces, N.M. won the top prize – a Triton boat with a Mercury Marine engine valued at $45,000 - with a three-day total of 36 pounds, 8 ounces on Saturday. “This really means a lot,” said Ruddick, who threw a watermelon Senko all three days. In all, the top 25 co-anglers earned cash and merchandise totaling $114,400.

Day 4: Monroe Prevails in Elite Series Opener

Ish MonroeDEL RIO, Texas — The CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series’ “Battle on the Border Presented by Mercury Marine” began with 106 of the world’s best anglers and ended on Sunday on Lake Amistad when Hughson, Calif., angler Ishama Monroe celebrated his first win in his 10-year BASS career, earning the top prize of $100,000.

To see the history-making event, tune it to The CITGO Bassmasters aired Saturday, March 18 on ESPN2 at 10 a.m. ET.

Monroe brought in a five-fish stringer of 23 pounds, 8 ounces on Day 4 for a tournament total of 104-8. The angler came close – but didn’t break – the BASS record for heaviest four-day tournament weight of 108-12, still held by Arizona angler Dean Rojas.

Included in Monroe’s sack was a 9-pound Purolator Big Bass of the Day, earning him an additional $1,000 bonus. The 31-year-old pro, who was previously ranked 32nd on the Bassmaster Elite Series Power Index, also gained ground by moving to 13th place, increasing his average weight caught to 24-11 per tournament.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole career,” Monroe said. “I want to thank BASS for making my dreams come true. Getting a win was the first item on my checklist and now I’m focused on the Angler of the Year. This has definitely been the best week of my career.”

Ish MonroeMonroe said his secret to catching the key 9-pounders throughout the tournament was a snag proof frog. Additionally, he threw a Reaction Innovations Vixen. He searched for bedding fish the final day, working slowly in shallow water 1 to 8 feet deep.

Monroe’s friend and roommate, Fred Roumbanis of Auburn Calif., finished second overall. The 26-year-old brought in the largest sack of Day 4 with 28-1, earning the $1,000 BUSCH Heavyweight Bag of the Day bonus. If it remains one of the 10 heaviest in Elite Series season, Roumbainis will qualify for the BUSCH Shootout later in the year.

“I am just stoked for him,” said Roumbanis, referring to Monroe. “If someone beats me, I want it to be one of my friends. I am just so happy to say that I finished in second place.”

Roumbanis fished water 8 to 20 feet deep, throwing swim baits to isolated islands.

In third place and rounding out the California anglers of the Elite 12 was Mike Reynolds of Modesto. The one-time BASS winner brought five fish to the scales for a total weight of 99-4. Reynolds fished beds and threw both topwaters and tubes into trees. He fished water no deeper than 10 feet.

The rest of the field was Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., in fourth with 98-5; Steve Kennedy of Auburn, Ala., in fifth (97-3); Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., in sixth (97-0); Alton Jones of Waco, Texas, in seventh (95-6); Gary Klein of Weatherford, Texas in eighth (94-3); Ken Cook of Meers, Okla., in ninth (93-7); Matt Reed of Madisonville, Texas in 10th (91-3); Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., in 11th (87-13); and Dean Rojas of Havasu, Ariz., rounding out the Elite 12 with 82-6.

“Thank goodness these guys slipped a little,” Monroe said. “Kevin VanDam is one of the best anglers out there and you never want him behind you.” VanDam, the 2001 and 2005 CITGO Bassmaster Classic champion, maintained his leadership on the Power Index, catching an average of 37-13 per tournament.

Overall, the top 50 Elite Series anglers cashed in on a total prize purse of $673,150 and all 106 earned points towards qualifying for the Bassmaster Majors and the highly coveted CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year Award.

“The Battle on the Border Presented by Mercury Marine” is the first of 11 Elite Series events in 2006. The next stop, “The Lone Star Shootout Presented by Triton Boats,” is scheduled for Sam Rayburn Reservoir on March 16-19 in Jasper, Texas. Elite Series anglers compete for a total of $7.4 million cash in these events.
