Day 1: Elite Rookie Chris Lane Captures Lead
Back to top
PLATTSBURGH,
N.Y. – Elite Series’ rookie and Florida pro Chris Lane took the Day 1 lead
in the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series’ Champion’s Choice on Lake Champlain on
Thursday.
Lane brought in a limit of five largemouth bass that weighed 21 pounds, 2
ounces, putting him just 1 pound, 10 ounces ahead of Arkansas’ Mike Wurm and
Oklahoma’s Terry Butcher, who tied for second place with a catch of 19-8.
See if Lane can hold the lead, or if he will be caught by the remaining 101
Elite anglers in the field, on The CITGO Bassmasters Saturday, July 22, at
10 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
Lane, 30, of Winter Haven, Fla., said his strategy was to fish Lake
Champlain just like he fishes his home water, Lake Okeechobee in Florida,
where he won the CITGO Bassmaster Southern Tour event in January.
“When I came into the bay and saw all of the hydrilla and lily pads…I knew I
had found something,” said Lane, who added that Okeechobee contains the same
types of aquatic vegetation. “When I started fishing slow, they just started
killing it [the lure].”
Lane said his primary lure was a Gambler Cane Toad, and that he had his
limit by 9 a.m.
A first-day lead in an Elite event is an accomplishment, and especially so
for Lane. His highest finish in an Elite Series event this year is 28th.
Currently 11th in the Toyota Rookie of the Year standings, he is confident
this tournament will find him in the Elite 12 on Sunday, when the final-day
field will be the top 12 from Saturday’s competition.
“It feels good,” he said. “I’m not nervous or concerned, I’m just ready to
go out there and fish. These guys aren’t going to slack off, so I’ve got to
work.”
Holding second place with Butcher, Wurm keyed in on largemouth, including a
6-pound, 6-ounce lunker that took Purolator Big Bass honors, earning him a
$1,000 bonus. Wurm, currently ranked 11th on the Bassmaster Elite Series
Power Index, said he fished a blue-and-black Strike King jig in 2 to 5 feet
of water.
“I had a marvelous day,” said Wurm, 53, of Hot Springs, Ark. “It was a
little bumpy, but by the time I got to my second location, things started
popping.”
Butcher, 35, was one of the few Elite anglers in the top 10 who brought both
largemouth and smallmouth bass to the scales on Thursday. He said he fished
for largemouth in the morning, but left his location early for smallmouth
bass. Butcher, who is from Talala, Okla., said he flipped a variety of
lures, including spinnerbaits, jigs, and frogs.
Rounding out the top five were Paul Hirosky of Pennsylvania, whose 19
pounds, 6 ounces put him just 2 ounces out of second place, and veteran pro
Denny Brauer champion of the 1998 CITGO Bassmaster Classic. Brauer, In fifth
with a catch of 19-5, was just 1 ounce behind Hirosky.
Co-angler Stephen Gould of Kalamazoo, Mich., took the Day 1 lead in his
division with 12 pounds, 12 ounces. Included in Gould’s catch was a 4-pound,
15-ounce fish for Purolator Big Bass honors in the co-angler division. He
shared the bonus $500 prize with second-place co-angler Bill Spence of
Vermont, who also brought in a 4-15 bass.
Gould was just 11 ounces ahead of Spence, and a slightly more comfortable
1-13 ahead of third-place holder Charlie Raia of Alabama. They were followed
by Tom Sweeney of Connecticut with 10-1 and Kevin Cunningham of New York
with 10 pounds even.
The top 25 co-anglers are competing for $115,400 in cash and merchandise.
Their three-day competition ends on Saturday, when the winner gets a fully
rigged Triton boat valued at $45,000.
Elite Series anglers are vying for $673,150 in cash to the top 50 Elite pros
and valuable points toward qualifying for the Bassmaster Majors and CITGO
Bassmaster Classic; points also count in the race for the coveted CITGO
Bassmaster Angler of the Year award.

Day 2: Chris Lane Boosts His Lead
PLATTSBURGH,
N.Y. – On the second day of the Champion’s Choice on Lake Champlain, Chris
Lane fended off 101 fellow CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series pros and kept his
Day 1 lead.
Lane’s Day 2 catch in the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series event was 19-8, for
a two-day total of 40-10. He stretched his lead to nearly 3 pounds, keeping
Denny Brauer of Camdenton, Mo., at arm’s length. Brauer secured the
second-place spot with a two-day total of 37-15.
To catch all the upstate New York action of the Champion’s Choice, tune into
The CITGO Bassmasters Saturday, July 22, at 10 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
Lane, whose hometown is Winter Haven, Fla., said he targeted largemouth bass
on Friday. The one smallmouth he brought to the scales he said he caught
“accidentally,” but it contributed substantially to the margin of 2-11
between him and Brauer.
Lane said he fished water 2 to 3 feet deep and looked for areas abundant in
vegetation similar to what he’s used to on his home waters of Lake
Okeechobee in Florida. He said his main lure Friday, as on Thursday, was a
Gambler Cane Toad, which helped him put a limit of bass in his livewell by
8:30 a.m.
The realization that he had a very good shot at winning his first Elite
event apparently began to affect him Friday. “(My nerves) started to hit me
a little this afternoon. I caught all of those fish and just started getting
excited.”
A rookie in the Elite Series, Lane, 30, is currently 11th in the Toyota
Rookie of the Year standings and 71st in the CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the
Year points race. His highest Elite finish so far was 28th place in the
Empire Chase on Oneida Lake, July 6-9. With only two days left in the Lake
Champlain competition, Lane has his eye on the $100,000 top prize.
“The fish are there, but it’s still anybody’s game,” Lane said.
Brauer, the 1998 CITGO Bassmaster Classic champion, moved from fifth to
second with a Day 2 catch of 18 pounds, 10 ounces. He said his limit of
largemouth fell for a Strike King jig. He fished several locations ranging
from 2 to 12 feet deep, and concentrated on areas with shallow vegetation
and wood.
“I’ve had a lot of good fortune,” said Brauer. “I’ve had the water all to
myself, and I haven’t lost a fish all week. I feel really good about it.”
With 37 pounds, 9 ounces, Empire Chase champion Tommy Biffle of Wagoner,
Okla., moved up Friday to third from his eighth place finish on Thursday. In
fourth on Friday with 36-11 was Oklahoman Terry Butcher. Rounding out the
top five was Texan Todd Faircloth with 36 pounds, 1 ounce.
Other anglers making the top-50 cut on Friday included:
- Terry Segraves, 57, of Kissimmee, Fla., with 28-0, moved from 59th to
35th. Segraves said he fished areas of Champlain similar to his home waters
of Florida, keying in on vegetation. “There’s so much grass, it’s
unbelievable.”
- Rookie Jared Lintner, 32, of Arroyo Grande, Calif., brought in 17-6,
moving him up from 10th to eighth. Currently third in Toyota Rookie of the
Year points, Lintner said he used a variety of lures on Friday.
- Randy Yarnall of Womelsdorf, Pa., jumped from 71st to 40th on Friday
with a Day 2 catch of 15 pounds, 13 ounces. “I’m on some good fish now and I
have a good pattern. I’m confident I can do it again tomorrow.”
In the co-angler division, Bill Spence of St. Albans, Vt., moved from second
to first with a two-day total of 22 pounds even. He was followed by Charlie
Raia of Alabama (19-6); Justin Martens of California (18-15); and Jim
Staszewski of Maine and David Paul of Connecticut, who tied for fourth with
18-13.
The top 25 co-anglers are competing for $115,400 in cash and merchandise.
Their three-day competition ends Saturday, when the winner gets a fully
rigged Triton boat valued at $45,000.
Elite Series anglers are vying for $673,150 in cash to the top 50 Elite
pros. They’re also out to rack up valuable points toward qualifying for the
Bassmaster Majors and CITGO Bassmaster Classic. The points also count in the
race for the CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year award.

Day 3: Lane Gunning for a Wire-to-Wire Win
Back to top
PLATTSBURGH,
N.Y. – Keeping his lead for the third day in a row, CITGO Bassmaster Elite
Series rookie Chris Lane of Winter Haven, Fla., pulled another limit of
largemouth bass from Lake Champlain Saturday for a three-day total catch of
58-3.
Lane fended off the other 49 Elite anglers on Saturday, including seasoned
veteran and 1998 CITGO Bassmaster Classic champion Denny Brauer, who was
nipping at his heels, just 1 pound, 4 ounces away. Brauer reeled in a Day 3
catch of 19 pounds even, boosting his total to 56-15.
With one day to go in the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series’ Champion’s Choice,
Brauer not only has a clear shot at the $100,000 top prize, he could easily
hit the $2 million mark in Bassmaster winnings, a feat accomplished only by
one other Bassmaster angler, Elite pro Kevin VanDam. Even if Brauer finishes
second or third at the Champlain event, he would still surpass the $2
million mark — he’s only $24,248 shy of the rare accomplishment.
See if Lane reels in the first rookie win of the Elite Series, or if Brauer
overtakes him and hits the $2 million mark, on The CITGO Bassmasters
Saturday, July 22, at 10 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
Lane said his go-to lure on Champlain was a Gambler Cane Toad – the same
lure he used to capture the 2006 Bassmaster Southern Tour win on Lake
Okeechobee in January. Lane’s comfort level was high because he was
targeting largemouth bass in a bay filled with vegetation also common to
Okeechobee.
“Those guys behind me are legends, and they’re going to be tough to hold
off,” said the 30-year-old Lane. “My mind is going in a million directions.
We’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
Brauer,
of Camdenton, Mo., has 15 BASS career title wins to his name. He said he’d
like to add the Lake Champlain Elite event to the list.
“The competitor in me wants to win,” said Brauer, 57, “but I will be the
first to congratulate him if he [Lane] wins. Mentally I’m in a good
position. I’m relaxed and ready to go fishing tomorrow.”
Brauer said his plan was to go to one hot spot and work it with Strike King
Pro Model jigs, flipping around the edges of reeds and mats.
In third going into the final day was Brent Chapman of Kansas with 54-6. In
fourth with 54-2 was Mississippi’s Paul Elias, who jumped from 11th place.
Rounding out the top five was Oklahoma’s Terry Butcher with 53-12. They’ll
be competing against the seven other pros who make up the Elite 12 for
Sunday’s finale.
Elias won the Purolator Big Bass award with a 5-1 fish as well as the Busch
Heavyweight award with his Day 3 bag of 19-14; each was worth a $1,000
bonus.
In the co-angler side of the Champion’s Choice, Bill Spence of St. Albans,
Vt., took top honors with a three-day total of 31-4. Spence moved from
second on Day 1 to the top of the leaderboard on Day 2 and held it Saturday
for the win.
An air traffic controller at the Burlington, Vt., airport, Spence said his
win on Champlain was the greatest accomplishment of his career. “This has
just been a phenomenal week. It really feels great,” he said.
Spence took home the top prize of a fully rigged Triton boat valued at
$45,000. The top 25 co-anglers competed for $115,400 in cash and
merchandise.
Elite Series anglers are vying for $673,150 in cash to the top 50 Elite pros
and valuable points toward qualifying in the Bassmaster Majors and CITGO
Bassmaster Classic. Points also count in the race for the coveted CITGO
Bassmaster Angler of the Year award.

Day 4: Denny Brauer Wins, Reclaims Title
PLATTSBURGH,
N.Y. – Denny Brauer handily outfished three-day leader Chris Lane on Sunday
to take the $100,000 win in the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series’ Champion’s
Choice on Lake Champlain and become the all-time BASS money winner.
With the winner’s purse in hand, Brauer boosted his total BASS career
earnings to $2,077,751, becoming not only a $2 million man, but once again
the BASS all-time money winner, passing two-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic
champion Kevin VanDam by more than $17,000.
“I was very proud of that accomplishment, and to get it back is special,”
said Brauer, who had held the top spot in earnings for many years. “Records
are meant to be broken, but I won’t go away quietly.”
To see Brauer take the win and become BASS’ all-time money winner, tune into
The CITGO Bassmasters Saturday, July 22, at 10 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
Brauer became the second angler to bust through the $2 million mark in less
than a month; VanDam hit it June 18. Winning the Champion’s Choice also
marked the 16th Bassmaster win for Brauer, whose career titles include
champion of the 1998 CITGO Bassmaster Classic.
On the final day of the Champlain event, Brauer, 57, of Camdenton, Mo.,
brought in a limit of five largemouth bass that weighed 23 pounds, 4 ounces,
pumping his four-day total to 80-3, almost 8 pounds more than the
second-place finisher. All week he fished a lure named for him: Strike
King’s Denny Brauer Premier Pro-Model Jig, which he rigged with a trailer
and 60-pound braided line.
After three days of trailing Toyota Rookie award contender Lane of Winter
Haven, Fla., Brauer committed himself on the fourth and final competition
day to a 100-yard stretch of water thick with reeds and grass. He said he
fished it most of the day, but had his limit by 7:30 a.m.
Not only did his final weight earn the 18-time Classic qualifier the
$100,000 top prize, but his Day 4 weight included the $1,000 Purolator Big
Bass (5-2) and was the biggest bag of the tournament, earning him the $1,000
BUSCH Heavyweight bonus.
If his big bag remains one of the 10 heaviest weights in the 11-event 2006
CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series, he will qualify for the $216,000 BUSCH
Shootout.
“This is probably my favorite lake as of this moment,” said Brauer as he
reflected on his Lake Champlain achievements. “It’s a very special win to
come at this point in my career.”
Brent Chapman of Lake Quivira, Kan., moved up Day 4 with a catch of 17
pounds, 15 ounces, bringing his total to 72-5 for the $30,000 second-place
payout. Third was Terry Butcher of Talala, Okla., who finished with 70-11,
for the $25,000 cash prize. Fourth was Mark Tyler of Arizona with 69-6.
Tommy Biffle of Oklahoma finished with 68-13, good enough for fifth, but not
for a repeat of his win a week ago at the Elite event on Oneida Lake in New
York.
After fending off the world’s best BASS pros for three days, Lane, 30, fell
to sixth. He had been fishing an area at the north end of the lake, but
Sunday headed south for the final day in what he described later as “the
wrong move.”
“I had a good practice there the first day and thought it had the potential
to [allow me to] hang on to the lead,” said Lane. “I think local angling
pressure scattered the fish.”
Despite losing the lead, Lane built his points total and jumped from 11th to
sixth in Toyota Rookie of the Year standings.
“My goal this year as a rookie is to learn as much as I can,” Lane said.
“You’ve got to do whatever it takes to adjust to what you’ve been dealt.
It’s been a heck of a ride this week.”
The Champion’s Choice concluded The Northern Swing of the 11-event 2006
Elite Series. With nine down, the Elite pros enter The Final Charge: Capitol
Clash on the Potomac River in Charles County, Md., Aug. 10-13; and The Rock
presented by TheraSeed on Table Rock Lake in Kimberling, Mo., Sept. 14-17.
In each Elite Series event, anglers vie for $673,150 in cash to the top 50
Elite pros. Just as important are the points amassed toward qualifying in
the Bassmaster Majors and CITGO Bassmaster Classic, and in the race for the
CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year award.
2003 CITGO Bassmaster Classic champion Michael Iaconelli leads the Angler of
the Year points standings, but trailing by 50 points is the leader in the
Toyota Rookie of the Year race, Steve Kennedy of Auburn, Ala.
Kennedy has had a phenomenal season, finishing in the top 50 eight out of
nine Elite tournaments. His highest finish was third place in the Southern
Challenge presented by Berkley on Lake Guntersville.
