Elite Series Next Stop: Clarks Hill
CELEBRATION, Fla. — The CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series, with
its winning formula of combining the nation’s best anglers with the best
lakes at just the right times of year, has produced big bass, big results
and big excitement in its first four stops in 2006.
Next week, the Series continues its pace when it visits Thurmond Lake at
Clarks Hill for the Pride of Augusta presented by Lowrance in Columbia
County, Ga., on May 4-7.
“It’s going to be really good, just like all of the tournaments we’ve had
this year,” said Davy Hite, the 1999 CITGO Bassmaster Classic champion from
South Carolina. “BASS has the schedule really right with great lakes at
great times. It’s unbelievable how good the fishing’s been so far.”
BASS brought big-time tournament fishing back to Thurmond Lake last year for
the first time since 1975 and reminded the fishing world of just what a
fabulous largemouth fishery exists in the 71,535-acre impoundment officially
christened the Strom Thurmond Reservoir.
Located about 22 miles north of Augusta, the 39-mile-long impoundment has
turned into a quality bass lake after – as legend has it – well-meaning
anglers introduced a saltwater forage fish called blueback herring into the
Savannah River system.
The herring was first found in Thurmond Lake in 1982 but their population
has boomed to an estimated four to six million. Combined with threadfin
shad, bass and other game fish have a plentiful chain of food on which to
feast.
When BASS visited last year in March, California’s Mike Reynolds was the big
winner with 52 pounds, 11 ounces. Jimmy Mize of Arkansas (52-6) and Terry
Butcher of Oklahoma (50-0) also topped the 50-pound mark.
Ray Sedgwick, another Elite Series competitor from South Carolina, says the
fishing is typically even better in early May.
“The shad and blueback herring will be up shallow spawning and the bass will
be chasing them all over the place,” Sedgwick said. “That’s the ticket to
some of the best topwater fishing of the year.”
Both Sedgwick and Hite predict that the winner will need to boat at least 60
pounds over four days. That would be an impressive 3-pound-per-fish average
for a daily limit of five bass.
Unlike the early tournaments in the Elite Series season, neither pro expects
spawning bass to dominate the locations or angler strategies.
“I think it will be both topwater and cranking for post-spawn fish and some
sight-fishing,” Hite said. “There will be some sight-fishing for spawners,
but there will be a lot of topwater fishing for post-spawn.”
Sedgwick agreed. “The topwater fishing is going to be great. The bass will
really be ganging up on those blueback herring on the points and in the
coves.
At stake is a $100,000 top prize and valuable points toward the 2007
Bassmaster Classic.
Daily weigh-ins will begin at 3 p.m. ET at Wildwood Park, 6212 Holloway Road
in Appling. Coverage of the event will air on The CITGO Bassmasters on ESPN2
on Saturday, May 13 at 10 a.m. ET.
Day 1: On Top of the Hill: Elite Series
COLUMBIA
COUNTY, Ga. – A pair of crafty veterans sit atop the leaderboard after Day 1
of the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series’ Pride of Augusta presented by Lowrance
on Clarks Hill Lake. Capitalizing on a productive and early top-water bite,
Norman, Okla., angler Kenyon Hill vaulted to the head of the class after
catching 21 pounds, 13 ounces on the first day. Hill holds a slight 4-ounce
margin over closest competitor and fellow veteran Floridian Steve Daniel
(21-9).
Viewers can catch all of the Elite Series action from Columbia County, Ga.,
on ESPN2 Saturday, May 13, at 10 a.m. ET on The CITGO Bassmasters.
Employing a run-and-gun style, Hill stopped at every point that looked
productive, made a few casts and then moved on if he didn’t find a bite. The
41-year-old caught 20 keeper-size bass, he said.
“I burned up a lot of fuel today and at nearly $3 a gallon, that is an
expensive deal,” the affable Hill joked. “I learned a lot about the fishery
today and I just hope to eliminate the places that didn’t produce.”
Like most of the field, Hill used top water lures early in the morning but,
playing it close to the vest, he would not reveal his choice of lure. “I
don’t want to let the cat out of the bag early,” said Hill, who is ranked
57th on the Bassmaster Elite Series Power Index, catching an average of 21
pounds, 15 ounces per tournament. “I will let you know more on Sunday.”
Hill, who has fished BASS since 1986, has amassed nearly $600,000 in total
winnings. The Elite Series champion prize money of $100,000 would
significantly boost his total.
Daniel, a BASS veteran of 23 years, also took advantage of an early top
water bite on his way to his five-bass limit. “It was just a great day, a
really fun day,” he said. “I used jerk baits and top water baits and just
went power fishing, which is the style I perform best.”
Daniel reached way back in the tackle box for his top water bait of choice,
a Bagley Bang-O-Lure plug. He estimated the lure is close to 30 years old,
but it produces whenever the top water bite is on, according to Daniel. The
72nd- ranked Power Index angler boated the majority of his keeper fish on
the vintage lure.
Rounding out the top five were ex-Kentucky Derby jockey Kevin Wirth (20-10),
followed by South Carolina’s Jason Quinn (20-9) and Davy Hite (20-1).
On the co-angler side, Michigan’s David Clark (12-13) leads in the chase for
a fully-rigged Triton boat valued at $45,000, followed by the Peach State’s
Jon Stringfield (10-7) and North Carolina’s Mike Kirkley (9-2).

Day 2: Hite Hammers Clarks Hill on Day 2
COLUMBIA
COUNTY, Ga. – Utilizing the same pattern he fished at a 1983 BASS Federation
Nation team tournament on the same fishery, Davy Hite has tamed tricky
Clarks Hill Lake for two consecutive days at the CITGO Bassmaster Elite
Series’ Pride of Augusta presented by Lowrance. Having brought in
consecutive limits of more than 20 pounds each, Hite had a total of 40-10 on
Friday as well as a commanding five-plus-pound lead over Elite Series rookie
Jeff Connella (35-7).
Fishing fans can catch all of the Elite Series action and Hite’s vintage
pattern on the CITGO Bassmasters Saturday, May 13, on ESPN2 at 10 a.m. ET
Although Hite and his team did not win the tourney in 1983, his Clarks Hill
consistency and BASS resume certainly loom large over the rest of the field.
The South Carolina pro is ranked 24th on the Bassmaster Elite Series Power
Index and won the CITGO Bassmaster Classic as well as five other BASS
events.
Hite’s also a big believer in good luck and said that fishing in May – the
same month of his birthday – can only help him. May was also the month of
Hite’s last BASS win - a 2005 Bassmaster Elite 50 event on Lake Dardanelle
in Russellville, Ark.
“Its kind of ironic to me, but May has always been good to me,” Hite said,
grinning from ear-to-ear. “This win would be extra special to me because it
would be so close to home.”
Spacious Clarks Hill spills into Georgia and South Carolina and Hite, a
Prosperity, S.C. resident, lives just 40 minutes from the lake.
“I remember dreaming of fishing as a professional back during that
Federation Nation tournament,” Hite said. “And it just feels great to be
living the dream on the Elite Series right now.”
The 1999 Bassmaster Classic champ estimated that he has fished Clarks Hill
more than 150 times, and although his knowledge has been helpful, Hite
credited his bait as the biggest factor in solving Clarks Hill.
“The bait is so important to my success,” he said, declining to reveal the
actual lure. “I guess you could say I found something the fish love to eat.”
Trailing Hite was Louisiana’s Connella. Much like the rest of the field,
Connella developed a pattern but constantly moved around, trying to find the
hot areas. He keyed in on the post-spawn bite and caught some of his fish on
a top water bait while others fell for a Cyclone spinner bait.
The aid of an earlier flight on Day 2 allowed Connella to move up nearly 20
spots after Day 2. His Day 2 big bag of 21-10 qualified as the BUSCH
Heavyweight Bag of the Day, awarding him an extra $1,000. His limit also
included a 7-6 bass, good enough for Purolator Big Bass honors and a $1,000
premium.
“I didn’t lose one fish today, and I always have to be happy about that,”
Connella said. “The fish shut down at a certain point today, but I am
certainly happy with my day.”
Perhaps the hottest angler on the planet, John Crews of Salem, Va., was in
third place with 34 -10. Though Crews needs to mount a charge to overtake
Hite, he already has made the final cut to the Elite 12 twice this year. He
also has had two top-10 finishes this season and another four since 2001.
Rounding out the top five were Oklahoma’s Jeff Reynolds (33-14) and South
Carolina’s Jason Quinn (32-4). Day 1 leader Kenyon Hill of Norman, Okla.,
fell to sixth place with 31-12.
Only the top 50 anglers will fish on Saturday and the top 12 will advance to
Sunday. In that group is Alabama’s Aaron Martens in 42nd place (22-7).
Martens unveiled a new tournament jersey on Friday that features his newest
sponsor, Vault, a new energy drink owned by The Coca-Cola Co. Also fishing
will be 2005 Classic champ Kevin VanDam (21-3), who rounded out the top 50.
On the co-angler side, the Palmetto State’s Howard Halcomb led the chase for
a Triton boat valued at $45,000 with 15 pounds, 11 ounces of bass. Trailing
by less than a pound was Alabama’s James Hill (14-15) and in third was
Michigan’s David Clark (14-2).

Day 3: Fan Favorite Davy Hite Widens Gap on Day 3
Back to top
COLUMBIA
COUNTY, Ga. – An armada of more than 30 spectator boats watched Davy Hite
dominate the hard-to-tame Clarks Hill Lake for the third consecutive
tournament day on Saturday. At the end of Day 3, the Ninety Six, S.C.
resident - who lives just 40 minutes from the sprawling reservoir and has
fished it more than 150 times - had 56 pounds, 1 ounce, as well as a
six-plus-pound lead over Norman, Okla., angler and Day 1 leader Kenyon Hill
(49-12).
Spurred on by a rally of enthusiastic hometown cheers at the weigh-in and a
myriad of spectator boats on the water, Hite has kept the lead with a
vintage pattern he developed at a 1983 BASS Federation Nation team
tournament, putting him one step closer to the Pride of Augusta’s $100,000
top prize.
Fishing fans can catch Hite’s vintage pattern and all of the on-the-water
action from Clarks Hill Lake on the CITGO Bassmasters Saturday, May 13, on
ESPN2 at 10 a.m.
“All of these fans and the local support just feels great,” Hite said, who
has amassed more than $1 million in BASS tournament earnings. “I fished very
patient today and I am happy with my production, but tomorrow is another
day.”
Hite, who is ranked 24th on the Bassmaster Elite Series Power Index, has
credited his choice of bait as the most important factor in enticing the
Clarks Hill bass, but for obvious reasons, has kept the details all to
himself.
“I am going to tie that bait on once again tomorrow,” Hite said, brimming
with confidence. “It’s funny how I try to keep the details hidden and all of
the sudden, I see other guys fishing with the same bait. Word always gets
around somehow.”
Hite, who turns 41 on May 18, already is one of the most decorated anglers
in BASS history. His resume includes two CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year
titles and a 1999 CITGO Bassmaster Classic title, but the angler credits a
1996 Classic folly - in which he finished second - as the driving force
behind his success.
“I found out that winning opportunities don’t come around often so you have
to capitalize and really focus,” he said.
While Hite has built a commanding lead, it is far from insurmountable. The
nearest challenger, Hill, has stuck with a run-and-gun type pattern over the
course of three days. Hill found a productive area but failed to execute on
Friday, falling to sixth place. He recovered nicely on Saturday with a
18-pound bag.
Simplifying his approach, Hill remained patient Saturday using slow-moving
baits.
“I had a terrible day yesterday,” Hill said. “I didn’t make the right
adjustments, but I simplified my tackle and just went fishing today.”
Meanwhile, 1981 Kentucky Derby jockey Kevin Wirth sat in third place with
47-6. The annual Run for the Roses takes place tonight, but the 1981
Mythical Ruler rider had his sights set on a different crown.
“I am still in this thing,” Wirth said, despite trailing by more than 8
pounds. “If I am fishing in the tournament, I always have a chance.”
Also qualifying for the Elite 12 and fishing on Sunday are Palmetto State’s
Jason Quinn (44-14); Oklahoma’s Jeff Reynolds (44-7); Virginia’s John Crews
(43-13); Michael Iaconelli (43-6), winner of the last Elite Series event;
Missouri’s Mark Tucker (43-0); 1993 CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year Gary
Klein (42-14); Floridian Peter Thliveros (41-3); Alabama’s Randy Howell
(40-11); and Californian Jared Lintner (40-4).
On the co-angler side, the Palmetto State’s Howard Halcomb held on to a Day
2 lead to capture the coveted title and a Triton boat package valued at
$45,000 on Saturday with a three-day weight of 24-8.Halcomb beat out North
Carolina’s Gary Abernethy (21-11) and the Peach State’s Ed Amos (21-5).

Day 4: Clarks Hill Bite is Right for Hite
Back to top
COLUMBIA
COUNTY, Ga. – With a six-plus-pound lead heading into the final day of the
CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series’ Pride of Augusta presented by Lowrance, the
tournament was Davy Hite’s to lose.
But the Ninety Six, S.C., resident fished a rock-steady final day, pulling
in a limit of 15 pounds, 11 ounces to outlast closest competitor and Norman,
Okla., angler Kenyon Hill. Hite took the tournament with a total of 71-12.
Although Hite utilized a productive pattern he developed at a 1983 BASS
Federation Nation tournament almost exclusively during Days 2 and 3, it was
a completely different pattern that led to his clinching the final day.
Fishing fans can watch Hite’s performance and all of the Elite 12 action on
the CITGO Bassmasters on Saturday, May 13, on ESPN2 at 10 a.m.
Hite, anticipating heavy cloud cover and gloomy skies on Sunday, switched
his bait from a ½-ounce, brown-colored jig used on the first three days of
competition to 4- and 5-inch swimbaits that mirrored the blueback herring
that bass feed on at Clarks Hill this time of year.
“When you have a big lead like I did heading into the final day, you tend to
panic if you don’t get a limit early,” Hite said, avoiding the behavior that
often plagues amateur anglers. “So, even though I had developed that pattern
earlier and utilized it effectively, I had the courage to put that rod
down.”
The tournament victory and handsome payoff signal yet another significant
achievement in the month of May for the 1999 CITGO Bassmaster Classic
champion. He will turn 41 on May 18 and won a Bassmaster Elite 50 tournament
in May of 2005 on Lake Dardanelle in Russellville, Ark., pocketing $100,000.
Additionally, Hite also jumped from 24th to 13th on Bassmaster Elite Series
Power Index, catching an average of 33-2 per tournament.
“My wife brought up how I do well in May not too long ago and I don’t know
what it is,” Hite said. “I just wish I could fish like I do in May all the
time.”
Clarks Hill holds a special place in Hite’s heart, as the sprawling fishery
is just 40 minutes from his current residence and he has fished it more than
150 times. With the hometown connection, Hite’s seventh BASS tournament win
has special significance, the angler said.
“This is a cherished victory,” said Hite, who embraced his youngest son,
9-year-old Peyton, when he won. “I see tons of faces in the crowd that I
know and the hometown crowd is so supportive that it makes this win extra
special.”
Although Hill finished in a distant second, he had no regrets about the
tournament. His run-and-gun approach netted him 62 pounds, 15 ounces of bass
over the four days and he only lost one fish in the tournament.
“I had an awesome tournament,” the Oklahoman said. “I fished as well as I
know how to fish and I am ready to go for the rest of the year, especially
the upcoming Major (Bassmaster Memorial, May 18-21; Fort Worth, Texas).”
Hill caught the biggest bass of the day, a 6-14 largemouth, that earned him
the Purolator Big Bass of the Day and the $1,000 premium. The BUSCH
Heavyweight Bag of the Day went to Lake Wylie, S.C. resident Jason Quinn
with a 15-12 limit.
Rounding out the Elite 12 was Quinn (60-10) in third; 1983 Kentucky Derby
jockey Kevin Wirth (59-12) in fourth; Alabama’s Randy Howell (58-7) in
fifth; Missouri’s Mark Tucker (57-0) in sixth; Californian Jared Lintner
(55-7) in seventh; Floridian Peter Thliveros (55-2) in eighth; Oklahoman
Jeff Reynolds (54-5) in ninth; Virginian John Crews (54-4) in 10th; 1993
CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year Gary Klein (53-9) in 11th; and 2003
CITGO Bassmaster Classic champion Mike Iaconelli (53-2) in 12th.
The top BASS anglers will visit Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth in Texas
on May 18-21 for the Bassmaster Memorial, which will award the winner
$250,000 cash. The tournament will receive same-day coverage on ESPN2 on May
21 at 7 p.m. ET.
