What’s
at stake: $673,150 in cash to the top 50 Elite pros and valuable points
towards qualifying in the CITGO Bassmaster Majors, CITGO Bassmaster Classic
and the race for the CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year award. The top 25
co-anglers compete for $115,400 in cash and merchandise.
Telecast: The “Lone Star Shootout presented by Triton Boats” will be aired
on The CITGO Bassmasters on March 25 at 10 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
The Pros Said It
“It’s going well, but I know the wind and clouds will be a factor in this
tournament. I haven’t found what I’m looking for, but I am finding enough to
survive.” – Six-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic qualifier and ranked second on
the Bassmaster Power Index, Edwin Evers, 31, Talala, Okla.
“Everyone is going to have a limit because there are lots of fish to be
caught, but the weights won’t be as big as they were on Lake Amistad. It’s
breezy everywhere you go and that doesn’t make it as easy as it could be.” –
Winner of the Elite Series season-opener Battle on the Border presented by
Mercury Marine, Ish Monroe, 31. Hughson, Calif.
“We’re hitting the lake at the right time because I caught 50 fish on the
first day of practice. With the full moon this week and the males getting
the nests ready, it’s gearing up to be a good tournament. I haven’t found a
lot of really big fish, but there’s enough of them cruising that I will
track them down.” – Two-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic qualifier and ranked
30th on the Bassmaster Power Index, Lee Bailey, 43, Boaz, Ala.
“I haven’t found anything exciting yet, but the lake is one of the greats,
even with the fishing pressure its endured in the last month. Catching 5- to
7-pounders will be key.” – 24-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic qualifier and
ranked 16th on the Bassmaster Power Index Gary Klein, 48, Weatherford,
Texas.
The Strategy
Evers: Evers is targeting staging fish, or fish that haven’t yet spawned.
He’ll use a crank bait or a Carolina rig in water 5 to 10 feet deep.
Monroe: Monroe, who said he can’t “slack off” just because he won the Elite
Series season-opener will first look for shallow spawning fish. He may
change that strategy and move to deeper pre-spawn or post-spawn bass later
in the tournament.
Bailey: He won’t fish deeper than 6 or 7 feet and he’ll throw Senkos and
topwater. Bailey said flipping is nearly impossible, as the lake level is
low. He’s avoiding wind by staying off the main lake and instead fishing
back bays and creek arms.
Klein: Klein competed in the CITGO Bassmaster Southern Tour event earlier in
March, where he placed sixth with 53 pounds, 13 ounces. He said he will use
the same techniques in this tournament, fishing shallow, but changing his
baits based on weather conditions.
Day 1: Hackney, KVD Battle at the Top
JASPER, Texas — Louisiana’s Greg Hackney and Michigan’s Kevin
VanDam battled each other – as well as bouts of homesickness – at the top of
the leaderboard Thursday on Day 1 of the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series’
“Lone Star Shootout Presented by Triton Boats.”
Hackney, of Gonzales, took the lead of the four-day tournament on Sam
Rayburn Reservoir with 22 pounds, 2 ounces. VanDam of Kalamazoo was right
behind him with 22-1.
Their performance, as well as the other 103 Elite anglers will be featured
on ESPN2’s The CITGO Bassmasters on Saturday, March 25, at 10 a.m. ET.
Hackney, who catches an average of 31 pounds, 5 ounces per tournament and is
fourth on the Bassmaster Elite Series Power Index, and was the 2004 Toyota
Rookie of the Year, said he’s missing his wife Julie and three young
children, but knows he has a job to do out on the road. “My wife takes care
of everything and all I do is fish,” he said. “I have it made.”
Hackney made his creel Thursday– which was the BUSCH Heavyweight Bag of the
Day – in one of four locations he had planned to rotate before finding
success in the first he visited.
Two-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic winner Kevin VanDam couldn’t spend much
time relishing in his second-place position. He instead wanted to call his
wife and twin sons to check in on his family.
VanDam, who leads the Power Index and is generally regarded as one of the
best power fishermen in the world, brought in 22-1. He said he made more
than 1,000 casts to bring in the weight, but finding that strength was much
easier than dealing with his bout of homesickness.
“I miss my family tremendously,” said the all-time BASS money winner. “I
talk to them at least five times before launch and then again once I’m back
in. My family is very into what I do.”
Though VanDam is a well-seasoned tour veteran, he’s spending one month away
from his home and family in Kalamazoo, Mich., a longer stint than ever
before. VanDam was in Del Rio, Texas, last week to kick off the first Elite
Series event, where he placed sixth. He’s fishing the Lone Star Shootout now
and will drive directly to South Carolina for the Santee-Cooper Showdown
presented by MotorGuide at the end of March.
Meanwhile, VanDam’s wife and business manager Sherry is deep into tax season
and his 9-year-old sons Jackson and Nicolas are beginning little league
baseball. “It’s really hard, but it’s something we’ve got to do,” he said.
Michael Iaconelli of New Jersey was in third with 21-8. Iaconelli, who
fished the middle of the lake for deep pre-spawning fishing in the morning,
said he, too, was homesick for his daughters, Drew and Riley. The girls wait
for their nightly call from Iaconelli, who is more interested in hearing
about the family’s pet cats than telling them how he performed on the water.
“Getting home to see my girls is better than winning a tournament, but I can
tell you that right now, I’m in the zone,” said Iaconelli, who is set on the
winning the CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year award. Iaconelli also is
ranked third on the Power Index, catching an average of 31 pounds, 6 ounces
per tournament.
Dean Rojas of Lake Havasu, Ariz., took fourth with 21 pounds. He said he’s
fished Sam Rayburn nearly a dozen times before, but this was his heaviest
sack of the visits. He targeted both the main lake as well as smaller creeks
to catch his limit. “Now it’s a matter of going out and doing it again
tomorrow,” he said.
Other Elite anglers agreed.
Rick Clunn of Missouri, Ray Sedgwick of South Carolina and Jimmy Mize of
Arkansas all brought in sacks in the 12-to 14-pound range and hoped those
performances would boost them Friday and help make tomorrow evening’s cut,
when only the top 50 anglers continue to fish on Saturday. After Day 3, the
field is cut to the Elite 12.
“Big Show” Terry Scoggins, who is eighth on the Power Index and catches an
average of 26-6 per tournament, said he was “disgusted” after fighting for
an hour with a nearly 4-pound fish that he hooked outside the mouth while
sight-fishing. Scoggins, adhering to BASS rules, had to throw the bass back.
He was in 19th place with 18-3 at the end of the tournament. “I’m still
upset about it,” he said.
Co-anglers also worked the lake today, with Chad Kallina of Texas leading
the pack with 12-11. Tri Brewer of Louisiana followed with 11-3; Steven
Oliver of California was in third with 11; Howard Stephens of South Carolina
was in fourth with 10-5; and Texan Rick Hill rounded out the top five with
9-12.
In that mix was Robbie Floyd, a well-known personality on ESPN2’s BASS
Saturday. At his first-ever tournament, Floyd weighed one fish 1-4, good
enough for 94th place. He said fishing with Battle on the Border winner and
friend Ish Monroe was helpful. “I like the West Coast style of fishing we
have,” he said. Floyd will appear on the new, upcoming ESPN2 show ESPN Mad
Fin Shark Series, which chronicles catch and release shark fishing in Key
West, Fla.
Lastly, Kelly Jordon of Mineola, Texas, brought in the Purolator Big Bass
weighing 8-3 and earning him a bonus of $1,000.

Day 2: Still Tight at the Elite Series Lone Start
Shootout
JASPER,
Texas — Kevin VamDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., took the Day 2 lead of the CITGO
Bassmaster Elite Series’ “Lone Star Shootout Presented by Triton Boats” at
Sam Rayburn Reservoir on Friday.
But that’s most likely not what fans in attendance – or the angler himself –
will remember.
What will stick will them? Maybe the image of the top-ranked Bassmaster
Elite Series Power Index angler proudly reeling in a five-pound bass – right
before the fish flipped into the boat, skimmed across the deck and plopped
back out on the other side. A frustrated VanDam – captured on ESPN cameras –
quickly fell onto his back. “It was the heat of the moment and I know better
than to flip them in,” he said. “It’s hard to keep fish on the line. They
are feisty and that’s the nature of the post-spawn.”
That near-catch – as well as other action on the water – will be featured on
ESPN2’s The CITGO Bassmasters on Saturday, March 25, at 10 a.m. ET.
VanDam still managed a limit of 17-5 for a two-day total of 39-6.
Directly behind him was Dean Rojas of Lake Havasu, Ariz., who leapfrogged
from fourth place to second on Day 2 with a total of 39-3. While Rojas
continued fishing both the main lake and creeks, the elusive angler, who is
19th on the Power Index and catches an average of 22-14 per tournament,
would not say what he threw, what technique he used or where exactly he was.
“I’m doing something different,” he said, defining his work as both
conservative as well as keeping with current weather conditions. Those
conditions are expected to worsen Saturday, as the forecast calls for rain
and wind.
In third place was former tournament leader Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La.,
with 38-15. Hackney, who is fourth on the Power Index, said he lost two big
keepers and was penalized for bringing in an expired fish. Still, he
remained positive and high on the leaderbord. “My expectations are as high
as they can get. I seemed to be the problem today, not the fish.”
John Crews of Salem, Va., and Tim Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., were tied
for fourth with 37-9. Horton, who said he caught his limit by 9 a.m., is one
of the few anglers not sight-fishing. Rather, he’s using an Excalibur XR50
rattle bait in the middle of the lake.
Friday was the end of the tournament for the majority of the field, as only
the top 50 pros and co-anglers compete Saturday. They include:
Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., in 10th with 34-9. Reese missed last week’s
cut after he was penalized for coming in two minutes late, but he was sure
to check his watch on Friday. “I was trying to be greedy last week because I
was after a big bass, but I’m not going to make that error again.”
Jason Quinn of Lake Wylie, S.C., who spent more than half his time on Friday
fishing for one female bedding bass that struck three times but never made
it into the boat. “My whole day was working a b-plan,” he said. “Saturday, I
am going back after two bass that I’ve already seen.” Quinn was in 38th
place with 29-6.
Byron Velvick, host of BassCenter on ESPN2 Saturdays at 11 a.m. ET. Velvick
brought in 15-2 on Day 1 and weighed in another 14-3 on Friday for a two-day
total of 29-5 and 40th place. Velvick, an avid poker player who lives just
outside of gambling capital Las Vegas, said unlike his risky work with a
swimbait on Lake Amistad last week, he relied on sight-fishing this
tournament, his go-to technique. “I worked off of my sight-fishing strengths
this time and I wasn’t a gambler.”
Former Bassmaster Classic champion and seventh-place Elite angler Takahiro
Omori took the BUSCH Heavyweight Bag of the Day with 20-6, earning him a
$1,000 bonus. If it remains one of the 10 heaviest in Elite Series season,
he will qualify for the BUSCH Shootout later in the year.
Greg Gutierrez of Red Bluff, Calif., had the Purolator Big Bass, a 7-7
largemouth that earned him a bonus of $1,000.
Also, co-angler Rick Hill of Texas was leading the charge with 18-13 in his
division. He was followed by Chad Kallina of Texas with 18-8; Russell Lohman
of Louisiana in third with 18-5; Thomas Ferro in fourth with 17-15; and
Howard Stephens of South Carolina in fifth with 16-14.

Day 3: Hackney Back on Top
JASPER,
Texas — For two of the three days of the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series’
“Lone Star Shootout presented by Triton Boats,” Greg Hackney of Gonzales,
La., has fought the same 4-pound male bass.
Both times, the fish won.
But Hackney, who led Day 3 of the tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir with
59 pounds, 2 ounces, said Sunday – the final day of the tournament - will be
his chance to make a “Hack Attack” on the creature.
His performance will be part of ESPN2’s The CITGO Bassmasters on Saturday,
March 25, at 10 a.m. ET.
“I only get one shot each day at this fish before he stops biting and goes
back on the bed,” said Hackney, who is ranked fourth on the Bassmaster Elite
Series Power Index. “Tomorrow, I’m going to throw him a curveball.”
Hackney said he continued to throw plastics Saturday and fish the same area
of Sam Rayburn, a strategy that bumped him back into the lead after losing
it on Day 2 to two-time Bassmaster Classic champion and all-time BASS money
winner Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich.
VanDam, who leads the Power Index and catches an average of 37-13 per
tournament, dropped to third place with a three-day total of 52-14. Between
Hackney and VanDam was Dean Rojas of Lake Havasu, Ariz., in second with
56-7.
Rojas, who said he would be eager to divulge the specifics of his strategy
after the tournament ends, has located one fish that he’s calling “the
miracle that could put me over the top.” Rojas found the fish just before
coming off the water Saturday, but it was surrounded with local anglers that
he chose not to bother.
On Sunday, only the Elite 12 pros will fish, including Stephen Browning of
Arkansas in fourth place (51-13); John Crews of Virginia in fifth (51-1);
and John Murray of Arizona in 12th (48-2), who also had the Purolator Big
Bass of the day - a 6-11 largemouth worth $1,000. Ninth-place Mark Tyler of
Scottsdale, Ariz., took the BUSCH Heavyweight Bag of the Day with 21-13,
earning him a $1,000 bonus. If it remains one of the 10 heaviest in Elite
Series season, he will qualify for the BUSCH Shootout later in the year.
The Lone Star Shootout winner receives $100,000.
Also, Saturday marked the final tournament day for co-anglers and Chad
Kallina of Texas took the competition with 28-3. He won a fully rigged
Triton boat with a Mercury outboard valued at $45,000.

Day 4: Hackney Reigns in Lone Star Shootout
Back to top
JASPER,
Texas — A temperature drop and increased cloud coverage helped secure the
top spot and $100,000 prize for Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., in the CITGO
Bassmaster Elite Series’ “Lone Star Shootout presented by Triton Boats” on
Sunday.
Hackney, who led on two of the previous three tournament days, brought in
20-8 on Day 4 for a total of 79-10. “I had the feeling today was my day and
I couldn’t do any wrong,” he said.
Fishing fans can see exactly how the Elite pro captured the win when The
CITGO Bassmasters airs on Saturday, March 25 on ESPN2 at 10 a.m. ET.
Hackney, who finished in fourth place last week at the Elite Series
season-opener “Battle on the Border presented by Mercury Marine”, said he
caught his limit on a Strike King stickbait fishing in small pockets in back
of a major lake arm. He culled after catching five fish 30 minutes into the
tournament and stayed within a five-mile stretch of water. Hackney said his
location was so good, he never sought out a 4-pound bass that eluded him
twice earlier in the tournament.
“I wasn’t worried about anyone else in this tournament because it was mine
to win,” said the second-ranked angler on the Bassmaster Elite Series Power
Index.
In second place was Dean Rojas with 75-13 and in third was Kevin VanDam with
68-1.
Rojas, of Lake Havasu, Ariz., said he was pleased with his performance, even
though it was just short of clinching the win. “I didn’t make any mistakes
this week,” he said. “I did everything right except catch more than
Hackney.”
Third-place VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., who was at risk of losing his title
of all-time BASS money winner to Denny Brauer, said several “bonehead”
decisions cost him the win, including one where he flipped into his boat –
and then lost – a five-pound bass. “This kind of result makes me focus a lot
more on what I need to do,” he said.
Still, VanDam maintains his lead on the Power Index, catching an average of
42-8 per tournament. His all-time BASS money winner title also is safe, with
winnings totaling $1.96 million. Brauer, of Camdenton, Mo., who finished
10th in this tournament, is close behind with $1.93 million.
The only rookie in the Elite 12, Bill Lowen of Ohio, ended in fourth with
64-13, and Mark Tyler of Arizona capped the top five with 64-3.
Hackney’s 20-8 bag on Sunday secured him the BUSCH Heavyweight award,
earning him a $1,000 bonus. If it remains one of the 10 heaviest in Elite
Series season, he will qualify for the BUSCH Shootout later in the year.
Kelly Jordon, who had the Purolator Big Bass on Day 1, also took the award
on Day 4 with a 6-12 largemouth, the largest of the tournament.
Having visited Sam Rayburn more than 30 times, BASS is no stranger to the
quality fishery - and the Jasper community rallies each time the
organization is in town, according to Susan Stover, executive director of
the Jasper-Lake Sam Rayburn Area Chamber of Commerce. “This is a fantastic
opportunity for our community because this event is so much more than a
fishing tournament,” she said. “It brings excitement and energy to the
community and gives publicity to us we could never afford to buy.”
Following the conclusion of the Lone Star Shootout, Hackney is leading the
CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings with 600 points. The Angler of
the Year program awards $125,000 to the angler with the most points at the
end of the season. Lowen is leading the Toyota Rookie of the Year race,
which awards $25,000 to the highest-ranking rookie in the Angler of the Year
standings. Brooks Rogers of Texas is on top of the Toyota Horizon Award,
which gives $10,000 to the angler with the greatest improvement from last
year.
Anglers have little downtime before the next Elite Series tournament, the
Santee Cooper Showdown presented by MotorGuide on March 30-April 2 in
Manning S.C. Another angler will take the $100,000 top prize.
