Elite Series Event # 11 of 11

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4

Day 1: Reese Grabs Early Lead on Table Rock

Skeet ReeseKIMBERLING CITY, Mo. – Skeet Reese found a pattern that played to his strengths Thursday at Table Rock Lake and led the first day of competition in The Rock presented by TheraSeed, the final event of the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series season.

The Auburn, Calif., angler, 37, who is seeking his first BASS win of the season, caught a five-fish limit weighing 15 pounds, 10 ounces to lead in the battle for the $100,000 top prize.

Fishing fans can watch the action of the Table Rock event on ESPN2 on Saturday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. ET.

Morning fog delayed the start of fishing by nearly two hours, forcing many of the 102 anglers to change their plans of attack for the day. While many of the competitors brought in bags containing smallmouth and spotted bass, Reese caught all largemouth bass.

“This lake has kind of showed me up every time I’ve been here so I got a little redemption today,” said Reese, who finished in 70th place at Table Rock in 2005 and 67th in 2004. “I fished some of my strengths today and that was shallow-water power fishing.”

Experiencing a late-season surge, Reese nearly secured his third BASS win at the Capitol Clash presented by BUSCH Beer on the Potomac River in August, but Texan Kelly Jordon prevailed over Reese by a slim 6-ounce margin.

Kevin Short of Mayflower, Ark., who finished third in the recent Bassmaster Legends presented by Goodyear, continued his own late-season charge with a five-fish haul of 14-1 for second place.

“I needed a surge about five tournaments ago but you take it when you can get it,” said Short, who also did not want to discuss his tactics. “I’d like to see a little bit of wind (Friday). I was really surprised I caught them as well as I did (Thursday) with no wind.”

Todd Faircloth of Jasper, Texas, had the third-highest total on Thursday at 13-9, followed by Bill Lowen of Cincinnati, Ky., with 13-3 and Guy Eaker of Cherryville, N.C., with 13-2.

CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year leader Mike Iaconelli was tied for 26th Thursday with 7-0. Iaconelli is on pace to win the $125,000 award if he finishes strongly in the season-ending event. Iaconelli’s closest competitor, Steve Kennedy, sits in 43rd place. Kevin VanDam, who entered the day in fourth place in the AOY standings, sits in 10th place in the tournament and could make a serious run at the title with a strong Day 2.

On the co-angler side, Wisconsin’s Keith Kavajecz led the way at 7-6, followed by Arkansas’ Shannon McClelland with 7-1 and Texan Michael Bass with 7-0. The champion co-angler, determined on Saturday, will take home a fully rigged Triton boat valued at $45,000.

All anglers will fish again on Thursday, with the field cut to 50 for Saturday’s competition. Only the Elite 12 anglers will fish on Sunday.

Day 2: Rookie Lowen Fishes Shallow to Lead Finale

Bill LowenKIMBERLING CITY, Mo. – While most of his competitors were fishing deep, Elite rookie Bill Lowen of Cincinnati, Ohio, defied the trend Friday by fishing in shallow river water at Table Rock Lake. The move gave him a narrow yet important lead after Day 2 of The Rock presented by TheraSeed, the final event of the 11-tournament CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series season.

Lowen caught five largemouth bass Friday weighing 11 pounds, 11 ounces, giving him a two-day total of 24-14. While the angler’s objective at this tournament was to finish well enough to qualify for the 2007 CITGO Bassmaster Classic in Alabama, the 31-year-old was thrilled to lead the charge for the $100,000 top prize and capture his first BASS win.

Fishing fans can see Lowen’s technique on ESPN2 on Saturday, Sept. 23, and Saturday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. ET.

“I’m fishing the way I know how to fish, and that’s shallow,” said Lowen, who has never fished Table Rock Lake before. “I’m going up one of the rivers as far as I can go, and all my fish are coming out of about 2 or 3 feet of water.” Lowen said he was fishing in stumps on a creek channel with a 12-inch worm.

Standings were tight at the top of the leader board heading into the third day, with Todd Faircloth of Jasper, Texas, in second with 24-7, only 7 ounces behind Lowen. Faircloth caught a five-fish limit of spotted bass weighing 10-14 on Friday.

“I figured something out in practice and expanded on it,” said Faircloth, who said he fished deep. “I’ve got a bunch of different spots I’m fishing and I’m really keyed in on what I’m doing.”

The top 50 anglers from the original field of 102 will fish on Saturday, and only the Elite 12 advance to Sunday’s competition.

Bill Smith of Somerset, Ky., with 23-3 was third, followed by Day 1 leader Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., with 23-2 and three-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., with 22-5.

VanDam’s strong two-day total could affect the battle for the $125,000 CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year title. Leader Mike Iaconelli barely made the top 50 – he was in 48th place with a two-day total of 10 pounds. And his closest challenger, Steve Kennedy, was in 46th with 10-2.

VanDam entered this tournament in fourth in the points standings and – with a solid finish - poses a threat to overtake the other two anglers and steal the title. Such a development would be a huge feat, as VanDam was disqualified from a tournament earlier this season and received no points.

Also, Shannon McClelland of Arkansas, the brother of June’s Sooner Run Elite event champion Mike McClelland, led the co-angler class with 12-15. Chris Koester of North Carolina was second with 11-7 followed by Michael Bass of Texas at 10-1.

Day 3: Faircloth Leads Table Rock Elite Series Finale

Todd FairclothKIMBERLING CITY, Mo. – Todd Faircloth of Jasper, Texas, had an “unbelievable day” Saturday, grabbing hold of a 4-pound lead in The Rock presented by TheraSeed at Table Rock Lake, the final event of the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series season. Faircloth will try to hold off a host of accomplished Elite anglers on Sunday for the $100,000 top prize.

The Table Rock event action will be shown on ESPN2 on Saturday, Sept. 23, and Saturday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. ET.

Faircloth, 31, one of only two anglers to bring in a five-fish limit on all three days of competition, weighed in with 14 pounds, 14 ounces on Saturday to bring his total to 39-5. He is trying to win his first BASS tournament and already has two second-place finishes under his belt.

“My goal coming here was just to make the Bassmaster Classic, but now my goal is to win,” said Faircloth, who, with his solid performance, is virtually assured a Bassmaster Classic berth. “I didn’t even think about winning it until Friday when I saw that I had a realistic chance.”

Faircloth has been targeting spotted bass the entire tournament and has been fishing with a five-inch Yamamoto Senko, using two colors for different times of the day. He said that his “magic” depth has been between 30 and 35 feet and he is catching all of his fish off the bottom on drop-shots.

Meanwhile, Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., rose to second in the standings with a 13-4 limit, bringing his total to 35-5. The three-time BASS winner is seeking his first win since March 2005 at North Carolina’s Lake Norman.

“I’m just fishing deep,” said Evers. “I’m locating fish with my depth finder and fishing really slow when I see them. You can’t be really aggressive with them and get them to bite.”

Kevin Short of Mayflower, Ark., the third-place finisher in the recent Bassmaster Legends presented by Goodyear on the Arkansas River, brought his total to 32-13 for third place. Short was dragging a Carolina rig at depths ranging from 28 to 36 feet.

“It’s wearing me out, but it’s working for me and I’m going to keep doing it,” said Short. “When I get a bite, it’s good, but I’m struggling on exactly where the fish are.”

Jon Bondy of Canada, was in fourth with 30-11 and William Smith, Jr., of Somerset, Ky., was fifth with 30-2.

Shannon McClelland of Arkansas, the brother of Elite Series angler Mike McClelland, won the co-angler tournament division with 20-14. McClelland won a fully-rigged Triton boat valued at $45,000. Jerry McVey of Missouri finished second with 17-1 followed by James Hill of Alabama with 16-8.

Lastly, Florida’s Shaw Grigsby, who was tied for 11th place, was disqualified for violating Rule 3.ii. The applicable part of the rule states: “Co-anglers and observers are not allowed to share information with Pro contestants.” The rules violation occurred after Saturday’s competition. Only the top 11 anglers will fish the final day of competition.

Day 4: Faircloth Breaks Through for First BASS Victory

Todd FairclothKIMBERLING CITY, Mo. – Todd Faircloth of Jasper, Texas, parlayed a deep-water, drop-shot pattern into his first BASS victory on Sunday at Table Rock Lake. Faircloth won The Rock presented by TheraSeed, the final event of the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series season, with 50 pounds, 9 ounces and took home $100,000.

The winner and his competitors will be featured on ESPN2 on Saturday, Sept. 23, and Saturday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. ET.

Faircloth, a professional angler for seven years, surged into the lead on Saturday and held onto the top spot while fishing against the 10 other finalists. Targeting spotted bass, Faircloth, 31, caught his fourth five-fish limit Sunday and weighed in 11 pounds, 4 ounces. Runner-up Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., finished more than 4 pounds behind with 46-3.

“I’ve come close a couple of times and just hadn’t gotten it done until today,” said Faircloth, who has two second-place finishes. “I never dreamed my first victory would come on a drop-shot with a spinning rod because I’m a flipper and a shallow cranker. It was an incredible experience for me.”

Faircloth used his depth finder extensively to locate fish and utilized a five-inch Yamamoto Senko in two colors. Because of rain and cloud cover on Sunday, he modified his pattern slightly, but the basic tactic still worked.

A deep-water pattern also worked for Evers, who caught a five-fish limit of 10-14 and logged his fourth top-10 finish of the season. He found success using a spinning rod and fishing 30 to 47 feet deep. “I fished in brush piles and little rock piles,” he said. “The key this week was not to move my bait. I tried to hold it as still as possible.”

Kevin Short of Mayflower, Ark., continued his late-season surge by finishing third with 45-14. Short also placed third in his last BASS tournament- the Bassmaster Legends sponsored by Goodyear. “I’d like to go about four more tournaments and see what would happen,” said Short, who weighed in five fish for 13-1 on Sunday. “The weather actually made it better for me. I had to shuffle around and find some new water, but I just did the best I could do.”

Rounding out the top five were Bill Lowen of North Bend, Ohio, with 43-13 and Canadian Jon Bondy with 42-6.

The Rock closed the 2006 Elite Series season and with its completion, the top 37 anglers were given berths to the 2007 CITGO Bassmaster Classic, Feb. 23-25 on Lay Lake in Birmingham, Ala. Also, the BUSCH Shootout field was decided.

On Saturday, Mike Iaconelli of New Jersey was named the CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year, Steve Kennedy of Alabama was named the Toyota Rookie of the Year and Denny Brauer of Missouri received the Horizon award.
