Thunderstorms Strike Day 1 on Neely Henry
Back to top
GUNTERSVILLE,
Ala. - Severe thunderstorms pounded the Day 1 competition and weigh-ins of
the CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series’ Southern Challenge Presented by Berkley
in Guntersville as well as the Mercury Marine Women’s Bassmaster Tour
presented by Triton Boats in nearby Gadsden.
Both the Elite anglers as well as the women anglers crossed their respective
stages – the Elite Series at Guntersville High School and the women at the
Gadsden Boat Dock - happy with their day’s performance, albeit wet and weary
from the weather.
At the Women’s Bassmaster Tour event, Rhonda Pope of Waco, Ga., led the pack
with four fish weighing 14 pounds, 8 ounces. At the Southern Challenge,
Denny Brauer and Alton Jones tied for the top slot with 20 pounds, 11
ounces. Brauer’s and Jones’ performance, as well as the other 103 Elite
anglers, will be featured on ESPN2’s The CITGO Bassmasters on Saturday,
April 29, at 10 a.m. ET.
Brauer, a Camdenton, Mo. resident and 18-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic
qualifier, brought in a five-fish limit to tie with nine-time Classic
qualifier Jones of Waco, Texas. “I’m really excited about today and
optimistic about tomorrow,” said Brauer, who is ranked 35th on the
Bassmaster Elite Series Power Index with an average weight of 24-5.
“Tomorrow really depends on if I’m fortunate enough to make the right moves.
I’m going to run to new water and hope it is as equally productive.”
Brauer said he utilized several different strategies and scrambled to cover
a large amount of water. He used spinnerbaits, topwater lures, swim baits,
worms and jigs, hoping to key in on one that really turned on the bite. On
Friday, he plans to fish just as many patterns as he did Thursday.
“I’m going to do all of the same things, but not stick with some of them as
long,” said Brauer. “It’s all related to wind and cloud cover.”
Jones, ranked 52nd on the Power Index with an average of 21-8, was focused
on post-spawn and spawning bass, keying in on creek channels and break lines
that he described as “pathways that lead the fish out of spawning areas.”
“Today went as well as it could have,” said Jones. “I didn’t lose a single
quality fish. I’ve been getting one monster bite each day in practice, but
didn’t get one today. I’m hoping to get that bite tomorrow and qualify for
the cut day.”
For the spawning fish, Jones threw YUM soft plastics and for the post-spawn
bite, he used moving baits.
Kelly Jordon of Texas was tied for third with Terry Butcher of Talala,
Okla., with 20-1. Jordon, 35, predominantly sight-fished for spawning bass,
but said most of the big females had already gone. He still was able to
secure the Purolator Big Bass of the Day, a 7-pound, 1-ounce female worth
$1,000. “She was cruising down the bank, feeding on brim,” said Jordon. “I
threw out an 8-inch plastic lizard and she ate it.”
In another tie, 2003 CITGO Bassmaster Classic champ Takahiro Omori and Timmy
Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., were in fifth place with 19-10 each. “Lake
Guntersville is one of the top five lakes in the country,” said Omori. “I
have lots of confidence in this place.”
On the co-angler side, Hadley Coan from Huntsville, Ala. took the Day 1 lead
with 12-2. He was followed by Robert Mullins of Vinton, Va. with 11-9. Also
fishing as a co-angler at the Southern Challenge was Mary Delgado, fiancée
of BassCenter analyst and Elite Series angler Byron Velvick. Delgado, of
Tampa, Fla., hooked four fish for the day, but none met the length
requirement to be weighed on stage. “It was still a good day, just hope to
get bigger ones tomorrow.”
Back at the Women’s Basssmaster Tour event, Linda Sands of Cullman, Ala.,
was in second place with 13-3 on Thursday. She was followed by fishing
matriarch Penny Berryman of Hot Springs, Ark., with 12-1; Tammy Richardson
in fourth place with 11-15; and Sheri Glasgow rounded out the top five with
11-8.
Mary James of London, Ark., led her co-anglers on Day 1 with a total of
6-12. She was followed by Bonnie Ward of Snohomish, Wash., with 6-11;
Barbara Gaskins of Suffolk, Va., with 5-14 in third; and Lesa Brown of
Harrison, Ark., and Susan Bowes of Batavia, N.Y ., tied for fourth with 5-6.

Day 2: First
WBT Title is on the Line
GADSDEN,
Ala. – Six anglers will chase history on Saturday as they seek to become the
winner of the inaugural event of the Mercury Marine Women’s Bassmaster Tour
presented by Triton Boats
As of Friday, after two days fishing Neely Henry Lake, two women anglers
were tied for first place. The top six, who made it to the final day from
the original field of more than 100 pro anglers and will fish Saturday, were
separated by less than three pounds.
Penny Berryman of Hot Springs, Ark., and Kathi Hurst of Ripley, Miss.,
shared the lead with total weights of 21 pounds, 7 ounces. Hurst moved up
from her eighth-place standing with a catch of 11-1 on Friday, while
Berryman went from third to first with a catch of 9-6.
“I look at the scores and see how tight it is in the top six,” said
Berryman. “My mind and every ounce of energy are going to be focused on
keeping my lure wet all day (Saturday).
“I would love to be the first winner, but I’m thrilled just to be here and
be in the top six,” she added. “I give 100 percent to the job at hand.”
Hurst, the only woman to qualify for the ESPN Outdoors Bassmaster Series
Championship this year, was just as determined to capture the title.
“I’m thinking about catching fish,” said Hurst. “I hadn’t really thought
about the historic part of it. I’m just trying to stay focused.”
Anglers fished on Friday under warm, overcast conditions, and there were
some reports of light rain. A severe storm came through the area after
fishing was completed on Thursday, and the top two said the weather affected
their fishing.
“Several patterns are working, but it’s been very complicated due to the
conditions we’ve been handed,” said Berryman. “It’s been really tricky
figuring this out.”
She said she fished surface water with a modified Zara Spook lure, then
switched to two different crankbaits, then did some flipping.
“I’m going to try and make a smart judgment call (Saturday) and it will all
depend upon the conditions,” she said.
Hurst likewise tried a mixed bag of lures and techniques.
“Today I went back to my same area and I started out like I ended
yesterday,” said Hurst. “I caught some early with a Wave Worms Tiki-Toad.
Then they stopped hitting that, and I switched to a slower bait and started
flipping a finesse worm in the grass, fishing shallow.
“The water was up this morning and I thought that might help me, but they
started drawing the water down and I think that might have hurt my fishing,”
she added. “The fish were a lot more active (Thursday).”
Sherry Glasgow of Muskogee, Okla., was third with 20-13 after catching 9-5
Friday. “I had been catching some fish on the beds the first day, and I was
excited to go back and get some of the ones I had seen,” she said. “But the
storm came through (Thursday) night and those fish were gone. The water was
muddy and there was a lot of debris. The fishing changed drastically.”
In places four through six were Linda Sands, of Cullman, Ala., 20-0; Tammy
Richardson, of Amity, Ark., 19-0; and Deanie Tate of Arkadelphia, Ark.,
18-15. Tate received the $1,000 Purolator Big Bass award for her 5-11 lunker
on Friday.
Rhonda Pope, who led Day 1 after catching 14-8, failed to make the final cut
after weighing in only 11 ounces Friday.
Texan Pat White led the co-angler division with 10-14, followed by Bonnie
Ward of Washington with 10-13 and Heather Sullivan of Arkansas with 9-9.
The final-day Women’s Bassmaster Tour weigh-in will be at Guntersville
(Ala.) High School in conjunction with the third-day weigh-in for the CITGO
Bassmaster Elite Series’ Southern Challenge presented by Berkley at Lake
Guntersville.
For the women, first prize in the pro class is a Triton Boat and Mercury
Marine package valued at $50,000; co-anglers are going for a Triton and
Mercury rig valued at $25,000. In addition to the prize money, anglers are
also chasing points toward qualifying for the Women’s Bassmaster Tour
Championship, a tournament that will be in conjunction with the 2007 CITGO
Bassmaster Classic.

Day 3:
Richardson Wins First WBT Event
GADSDEN,
Ala. – It was a thrilling day of paramount achievements for anglers fishing
the inaugural Mercury Marine Women’s Bassmaster Tour presented by Triton
Boats. Professional angler Tammy Richardson of Amity, Ark., made history as
she earned the first win of the five-event series with a three-day total of
33 pounds, 3 ounces. Coincidentally, Richardson’s Day 3 partner, Bonnie
Ward, won the co-angler division with a three-day total of 18 pounds.
The duo took left nothing to chance on Saturday as Richardson finished more
than three pounds ahead of second-place Sheri Glasgow of Muskogee, Okla.,
while Ward finished more than four pounds in front of runner-up co-angler
Heather Sullivan of Sitka, Ark.
With their performances on Neely Henry Lake, Richardson won a Triton boat
and Mercury Marine package valued at $50,000 and Ward was awarded a Triton
boat and Mercury rig valued at $25,000.
“I didn’t expect my weight to hold while I was sitting there,” said
Richardson, 34, who started the day in fifth place. “When it got closer and
I realized I could win, I just got more nervous.”
Richardson brought in a five-fish limit of 14-3, the heaviest sack of the
day. “I and my partner just had a great day,” she said. “I had my limit by 9
a.m. and the whole day just went really well for us.”
Richardson primarily targeted spotted bass using a green-pumpkin tube for
the early morning bite and switched to a Senko after 9 a.m. She had 15 bites
for the day. “I just can’t believe it,” said a still stunned Richardson.
Glasgow, meanwhile, brought in a limit totaling 9 pounds, 4 ounces and a
three-day total of 30-1. “The fish were trying real hard to spawn,” said
Glasgow. ”I threw out a floating worm everyday and they were short striking
it.”
Glasgow flipped a Texas-rigged worm into grass edges. She sight-fished the
first and third day, targeting bedding bass in shallow water 3 feet and
less.
“I was really surprised we didn’t have bigger stringers,” she said. “This
time of the year, you usually see more big fish shallow. I think what
affected that were the storms and fluctuation of the water.
The top six women who fished the final day of the WBT weighed in on the
CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series stage at Guntersville High School in
Guntersville. The Elite Series is currently holding its four-day tournament,
the Southern Challenge presented by Berkley, on Lake Guntersville. On
Saturday, Michael Iaconelli of New Jersey was leading that tournament with
56-10.
“It’s very exciting to see the large crowd at the weigh-in and I’m thankful
to BASS and ESPN to give us this opportunity,” Glasgow said. “It’s been a
dream for a long time and we’re finally seeing it come true.”
Linda Sands of Cullman, Ala., finished in third with a total of 29-10.
Hot Springs, Ark., resident and angling veteran Penny Berryman fell from the
co-lead on Day 2 to finish in fourth place overall. Berryman brought in
three fish weighing 7 pounds, 10 ounces, boosting her total to 29-1, but was
short of the win. While she was disappointed she didn’t take home the
trophy, she was thrilled with making the Top 6 and experiencing the
excitement of the Tour.
“It was so exciting to see the bleachers full of people,” said Berryman. “It
really made me feel special.”
Kathi Hurst of Ripley, Miss., brought in one fish weighing 2 pounds, 14
ounces and finished in fourth with three-day total of 24-5. Behind her was
Deanie Tate of Arkadelphia, Ark., in sixth with 23-9.
Co-angler Ward of Snohomish, Wash., brought in a three-fish limit of 7
pounds, 3 ounces for her win. The 51-year-old was nearly speechless as she
tried to describe her excitement.
“It’s unbelievable! I just don’t know what to say,” said Ward. “My partner
put us on some great spots. We fished mostly with Senkos and had a really
good day. I was able to cull and get a nice limit.“
Ward fished a consistent pattern and caught all but two of her fish on a
Senko. Though this was Ward’s first BASS tournament win, she plans to fish
the entire series.
“It’s extremely exciting,” said Ward. “I’ve never fished for such a prize.
It’s been a great tournament all week and all of the girls had a really
great time. I really appreciate all of the sponsors that are supporting this
Tour.”
In addition to the prize money, anglers earned valuable points toward
qualifying for the Women’s Bassmaster Tour Championship, a tournament held
in conjunction with the 2007 CITGO Bassmaster Classic.
The next stop of the Mercury Marine Women’s Bassmaster Tour presented by
Triton Boats is on Lewisville Lake in Lewisville, Texas, May 18-20.
