BASS American: High Rock Lake, N.C.

Major Event # 1 of 3

Day 1: Edwin Evers Storms Out to Lead Bassmaster American

Edwin EversGREENSBORO, N.C. – Edwin Evers vaulted to the Day 1 lead in the Bassmaster American presented by Advance Auto Parts on High Rock Lake Thursday. The Bassmaster Elite Series pro from Talala, Okla., boated a five-fish limit weighing 19 pounds, 8 ounces to claim a narrow margin over Brian Snowden of Reed Springs, Mo., who had 18 pounds, 10 ounces.

With many bass in transition after the recent spawning season, High Rock had been fickle for many of the 51 pros during pre-tournament practice. It didn’t show on Thursday as 38 of the competitors gunning for the tournament’s $250,000 top prize brought limits to the scales.

Coverage of the Bassmaster American presented by Advance Auto Parts can be seen on ESPN2 Saturday, May 26 at 9 a.m. ET.

Evers, whose most recent of three BASS wins was on North Carolina’s Lake Norman in 2005, admitted he wasn’t expecting much heading into the first of the season’s three Bassmaster Majors.

“I was going to be tickled to catch 10 pounds,” said Evers, who caught his fish primarily flipping and working crankbaits.

Rounding out the top five were Mike McClelland of Bella Vista, Ark., in third with 18 pounds, 7 ounces; Dave Wolak of Wake Forest, N.C., in fourth with 17 pounds, 10 ounce; and Gerald Swindle of Warrior, Ala., in fifth with 17 pounds, 2 ounces.

After the first two days of fishing the top 12 anglers will advance to fish a six-hole “course” Saturday on Lake Townsend, a small water-supply reservoir in Greensboro.

Weights start from zero for the semi-finals, but will carry over for the six anglers who make Sunday’s final.

Evers, who has amassed over $830,000 in career BASS earnings, and other contenders said they tried to save some productive areas for the tournament’s second day, but they won’t have to worry about that Friday as the tournament moves to Townsend for the final two days of competition.

“You can kind of swing for the fences,” said McClelland, whose 6-pound, 9-ounce largemouth was the Purolator Big Bass of the Day and earned him a $1,000 premium.

Even though Evers caught a limit early, he decided to abandon a shallow-water pattern he’d found in practice.

“My shallow deal, I didn’t really like those fish,” Evers said of the “cookie cutter” small bass he was boating.

The move paid off as he later caught two 4-pound-plus bass to boost his limit’s weight.

"I was cranking and flipping,” said the 32-year-old, adding that his keepers came from four separate spots.

Everything seemed to go Evers’ way Thursday. Early in the day he lost a crankbait, one of only two like it in his box.

“I went back there later in the day and it was just floating there,” he said, laughing. “I caught some more fish on it.”

He will be throwing it again on Friday.

“I’m going to go run a similar route to what I did today,” he said.

Day 2: Brian Snowden Leads Anglers at Bassmaster American

Brian SnowdenGREENSBORO, N.C. – Bassmaster Elite Series angler Brian Snowden of Reed Springs, Mo., dominated the first two days of the Bassmaster American presented by Advance Auto Parts at High Rock Lake. Now he gets to start over as Snowden and the 11 other anglers qualifying for Saturday’s action will have their weights zeroed with the action moving to Lake Townsend, a small water supply reservoir in Greensboro.

Snowden’s two-day total was 40 pounds, 3 ounces, nearly seven pounds ahead of second place John Murray of Phoenix, Ariz., who totaled 33-9.

At Townsend, the anglers will compete on a pre-designated six-hole “course.” Day one weights will carry over as the top six from Saturday’s action will advance to the final day and compete for the tournament’s $250,000 top prize.

Coverage of the Bassmaster American presented by Advance Auto Parts can be seen on ESPN2 Saturday, May 26 at 9 a.m. ET.

Rounding out the top-five anglers to advance were Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., in third with 33 pounds, 7 ounces; Mike McClelland of Bella Vista, Ark., in fourth with 30 pounds, 5 ounces; and Gerald Swindle of Warrior, Ala., in fifth with 29 pounds, 11 ounces.

Like many of the 51 pros in the event, Snowden struggled during pre-tournament practice to find a solid pattern at High Rock, where many bass are in a post-spawn transition phase.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Snowden, a two-time BASS runner-up still seeking his first win, of his first two days.

Late in his final practice day, the 34-year-old caught a couple of nice fish flipping the shallows, so he stayed with the technique during the tournament.

Snowden had two good fish early Friday but the action didn’t really explode until the sun got high and bass moved into shady spots tight to shoreline cover. Flipping a black and blue creature bait and a black, brown and chartreuse jig, Snowden caught 15 keepers between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Moving up from 15th place, Murray focused on an underwater rock pile Friday just 20 yards across, a place he’d found late on Day One.

“I caught two there the last 20 minutes Thursday,” said Murray. “So I just went to that rock pile and stayed all day.”

Murray said he was looking forward to moving to Townsend, and for good reason. He has had success in tournaments with little practice and the qualifying competitors were only allowed to drive on Lake Townsend, giving them little knowledge of the fishery.

“I’d rather go without practice,” Murray said.

Snowden wasn’t quite as enthusiastic.

“I’m definitely a slower, more patient angler,” said the three-time Classic qualifier, who added that he thought the other 11 anglers would also be challenged to develop patterns on their first day on the water. “I think for everyone that goes out there it will be somewhat of a practice day.”

Meanwhile, Randy Moffitt of Oak Island, N.C., won a fully rigged Triton boat package Friday. The 41-year-old Moffitt served as an observer with Fred Roumbanis, who caught the Purolator Big Bass of the Day Friday, a 6-6 lunker, earning Moffitt the coveted boat package.

Day 3: Fred Roumbanis Takes Commanding Lead

Fred RoumbanisGREENSBORO, N.C. – Bassmaster Elite Series pro Fred Roumbanis of Auburn, Calif., didn’t catch many keepers on Lake Townsend during the third day of the Bassmaster American presented by Advance Auto Parts, but the quality fish he put in the livewell gave him a commanding lead of more than 5 pounds over Brian Snowden of Reeds Spring, Mo., heading into the tournament’s final-day showdown among the six advancing anglers.

Their weights zeroed at the start of the day and most of the 12 anglers struggled on Townsend, a 1,500-acre water supply reservoir in Greensboro that was divided into a six-hole course for Saturday’s action. The 51 pros who started the tournament spent the first two days at High Rock Lake.

Roumbanis had just three keepers, but they weighed a total of 14 pounds, 10 ounces, enough for a comfortable cushion over Snowden, who was the only angler to bring a five-fish limit to the scales Saturday.

Coverage of the Bassmaster American presented by Advance Auto Parts can be seen on ESPN2 at 9 a.m. ET Saturday, May 26.

“I’m not catching many fish, but they’re big fish,” said Roumbanis, whose 6-pound, 3-ounce bass earned him his second consecutive Purolator Big Bass award a day after he pulled a 6-pound, 6-ounce bass from High Rock.

The 28-year-old angler said the two $1,000 premiums were going to be put to good use in a bank account for his first son, Jackson, who is due Monday.

“He’s going to have two grand in his bank account and he’s not even born,” said an excited Roumbanis, who is seeking his first BASS win.

The other anglers advancing to the final day of action were Mike McClelland of Bella Vista, Ark., in third with 5 pounds, 14 ounces; Mark Tucker of Saint Louis, Mo., in fourth with 5 pounds, 9 ounces; Ish Monroe of Hughson, Calif., in fifth with 4 pounds, 15 ounces; and John Murray of Phoenix, in sixth with 2 pounds, 13 ounces.

As they did Saturday, the anglers will rotate through the six holes on the Townsend course on the final day.

Roumbanis didn’t expect to be fishing Saturday, let alone Sunday. After a tough first day on High Rock Lake he was in 30th place, and had packed up his things and was ready to make the drive back to California.

“I was just going to fish and go,” Roumbanis said. “Then I made the cut.”

Having his mind on something other than fishing may be helping his performance, Roumbanis said.

“It might be the baby,” said Roumbanis, who caught two of his keepers on a drop-shot rig and the other sight-fishing. “I’m not stressing because I’m so excited about having the baby. Throughout the day I’m thinking about taking him fishing and then I stumble across something.

“It kind of mellows me out.”

Snowden, also seeking his first BASS win, said he got off to a slow start, and had only two keepers heading into the final fishing segment, during which anglers can fish any hole they choose. Casting a Senko around stumps and laydowns he caught three more keepers during the “happy hour.”

“It took me until the end of the day to finally figure out how to catch some,” said the 34-year-old Snowden, who added he felt he could catch Roumbanis as long as he gets a few big bites. “Anyone can have a good day out there.

“And anyone can go out there and zero.”

Meanwhile, Landon Siggers of Danville, Va., won the 7-10 age division with 100 points at the Bassmaster CastingKids competition staged Saturday at the Greensboro Convention Complex. Darius Davis of Raleigh, N.C., was the champion of the 11-14 age division with 100 points. The winners will move on to the state CastingKids semifinals later this year.

Day 4: 'Baby Pattern' Pays Off for Roumbanis

Fred RoumbanisGREENSBORO, N.C. – Using a strategy he dubbed "the baby pattern," Bassmaster Elite Series pro Fred Roumbanis of Auburn, Calif., won the Bassmaster American presented by Advance Auto Parts, topping runner-up Brian Snowden of Reeds Spring, Mo., by nearly 5 pounds through the tournament’s final two days on Lake Townsend.

He's not the first: Roumbanis became the latest in a long line of anglers to win a big tournament within days of the birth of a child. That list includes 2006 tournament winners Preston Clark of Palatka, Fla., and Dave Wolak of Wake Forest, N.C., the defending champion of the Bassmaster American.

“I feel like I had that baby thing going on,” Roumbanis said, laughing. “The baby mojo.”

Coverage of the Bassmaster American presented by Advance Auto Parts can be seen on ESPN2 at 9 a.m. ET Saturday, May 26.

Snowden finished second with 17 pounds, 3 ounces; Ish Monroe of Hughson, Calif., finished third with 11 pounds, 6 ounces; John Murray of Phoenix finished fourth with 9 pounds, 1 ounce; Mark Tucker of Saint Louis, Mo., was fifth with 6 pounds, 9 ounces; and Mike McClelland of Bella Vista, Ark., was sixth with 5 pounds, 14 ounces.

The tournament started at High Rock Lake, and Roumbanis barely made the top 12 cut after two days. Once the action moved to Townsend and the 12 qualifying anglers had their weights zeroed, the 28-year-old Californian was in the zone.

In compiling his two-day total of 17 pounds, 3 ounces, Snowden was the only angler to put a limit in the livewell both days at Townsend. But even his Sunday-best catch of 8 pounds, 3 ounces was not nearly enough to overtake Roumbanis.

“I just couldn’t get the big bites I needed,” said Snowden, a 34-year-old who now has three second-place finishes in BASS events.

Also helping Roumbanis was the fact that the 1,500-acre Townsend, a water supply reservoir, reminded him of the small lakes he grew up fishing in California.

“These places fish more sporadically, and that’s just my style,” said Roumbanis, whose Sunday catch of four bass weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces.

Roumbanis caught six of his seven keepers at Townsend by drop-shotting a 4-inch, margarita mutilator-colored Roboworm to target pre-spawn fish. He caught the other on an Easy Strike chatter bait.

He said he was confident heading out Sunday morning with the big lead.

“I knew if I stayed calm, focused on finesse fishing and fished smart and somewhat methodically, I was going to get bites and catch fish,” Roumbanis said. “And that’s what I did.”
