Preview: Elite Series Kicks Off 2007 on Lake Amistad

Ish Monroe won last year's event on Amistad. CELEBRATION, Fla. — With the memories of a highly successful inaugural season in the past, the 2007 Bassmaster Elite Series anglers will once again kick off their season on Texas’ Lake Amistad. The venue for the season-opening tournament produced near record-breaking weights in 2006 with eventual winner Ish Monroe weighing-in 104 pounds, 8 ounces.

The Battle on the Border presented by Longhorn will run March 8-11 out of Del Rio, Texas. Amistad is arguably America’s top bass fishery and is located on the Texas-Mexico border. In 2006, the massive lake surrendered a total of 1,347 bass weighing more than 5,000 pounds to the 106 Elite pros.

Fishing fans can see all of the on-the-water action from Amistad on The Bassmasters aired on ESPN2 Saturday March 17 at 9 a.m. ET.

The fishing last year was so incredible that a number of Elite pros including Monroe and California’s Skeet Reese have bought land or homes in the Del Rio area since their first visit. Florida’s Byron Velvick also owns both a home and a hotel on the shores of Amistad.

“The weights could be better than it was last year,” said Velvick, who served as a reporter on ESPN2’s Bassmaster Classic coverage this past weekend. “Depending on the wind, there should be a few anglers who total 100-pound catches.

“The tournament will be a little late in the springtime and we had a really cold winter. The fish will likely all be in a pre-spawn phase going toward the spawn, but the weights will still be really heavy.”

The 67,000 acre border lake was created with the impoundment of three rivers – the Rio Grande, Pecos and Devils. The bass fishing is helped by a number of prime bass habitat options that include: abundant hydrilla, hundreds of points, coves, flooded brush, timber, rocky shorelines, inlets, submerged ledges, boulders and drop-offs that go as deep as 200 feet.

“I see this tournament shaping up to be a classic prespawn tournament with some sight-fishing in some areas,” Velvick said. “Swimbaits will play a role in it as well and there is also an opportunity for guys to be innovative and show these fish things they haven’t seen a lot of.

“This is probably the best tournament lake in the country. There’s no place where you can’t win a tournament on this lake. There’s just big fish all around the lake and it’s not like most lakes where you have key areas where you have to go in order to win.”

Last month, Lake Amistad was the site of the season-opening event of the 2007 Mercury Marine Women’s Bassmaster Tour presented by Triton Boats. Texan Juanita Robinson set a WBT record with a three-day catch of 56 pounds, 2 ounces, winning the top prize of a Triton/Mercury rig valued at $50,000. She and Lucy Mize posted 26- and 24-pound-plus limits respectively.

The Elite pros will have one more day to fish Amistad than the WBT pros had and Velvick predicts that the winning weight will be around 110 pounds. The four-day BASS tournament record of 115 pounds, 15 ounces was set in 2006 by Florida’s Preston Clark on South Carolina’s Santee Cooper Reservoir, and Velvick believes it could be shattered.

BASS will also hold a Bassmaster Central Open event on Amistad Sept. 27-29.

Daily launches and weigh-ins will be held at Lake Amistad Resort & Marina in Del Rio. Launches will start at 6:50 a.m. CT with weigh-ins at 3 p.m. CT.

Day 1: Kennedy Seizes Slim Lead

DEL RIO, Texas – Steve Kennedy entered the practice period for the “Battle on the Border presented by Longhorn” on Texas’ Lake Amistad never having caught a bass with a swimbait. The 2006 Toyota Rookie of the Year showed Thursday that he is a quick learner, effectively working the swimbait on his way to 36 pounds, 10 ounces and the lead at the season-opening Bassmaster Elite Series event.

“This is just absolutely awesome,” the Auburn, Ala., pro said. “My hands have been shaking all day. This is a tremendous fishery.”

The Elite Series competition for $673,150 in cash on famed Amistad will be aired on The Bassmasters on Saturday March 17 at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2.

Though Kennedy had a banner day, he finished with only a 10-ounce lead over Bassmaster Elite Series rookie Scott Campbell, whose 36 pounds, 0 ounces, put him in second.

Kennedy got off to a quick start, boating 30 pounds by 9 a.m., primarily by working the swimbait, taking advantage of overcast skies, and focusing on staging fish in 5 to 8 feet of water. He used a variety of different lures in isolated areas the remainder of the day to upgrade his weight.

Kennedy said he has several areas he feels will be productive throughout the competition. Many are spots he fished in 2006 during his fifth-place finish at the season-opening Elite Series on Amistad.

The 37-year-old pro has been on a tear since joining the Elite ranks in 2006. He narrowly missed out on the 2006 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Award, which was won by New Jersey’s Mike Iaconelli. Less than two weeks ago, Kennedy scored an eighth-place finish at the 2007 Bassmaster Classic on Lay Lake in Alabama.

“One of my goals this year is to contend for the Angler of the Year,” Kennedy said. “I feel very good about my fishing right now and I think I can duplicate my success of last year.”

Campbell of Springfield, Mo., is looking to establish himself in his rookie season. He said he came to Amistad looking to make the top-50 cut and compete through Saturday, but after what he called a “fantastic” day, he felt he was in position go for the top-12 cut for Sunday’s finale.

“This is pretty surreal to accomplish this in my first Elite Series tournament,” Campbell said. “I am freaking out right now.”

Campbell’s limit was anchored by a 12-7 lunker that took Purolator Big Bass Honors and the $1,000 premium. Like Kennedy, he targeted pre-spawn fish with a swimbait, catching 20 pounds within 45 minutes after launching his boat.

Rounding out the top five were Arkansas’ Kevin Short (33-6), Florida’s Terry Scroggins (30-12) and Oklahoma’s Edwin Evers (29-11). Although Scroggins sits about six pounds out of the lead, the 38-year-old has momentum: Last weekend he won the Bassmaster Southern Open on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, and the week before scored a seventh-place finish in the Classic.

“When things are going well, it just feels like you can’t do anything wrong,” Scroggins said.

Anglers out to catch the top five included 2006 Toyota Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli with 27-9 for ninth place; three-time Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam with 26-8 for 14th place; and 2006 “Battle on the Border” winner Ish Monroe who tied for 21st with 25-2.

Minnesota’s Joe Barnett led the co-angler division with 24 pounds, 12 ounces. over Alabama’s Jimmy Sparks (23-7) and Texan David Stewart (23-2).

Day 2: Kennedy Maintains Slim Lead on Amistad

Gary Klein is tied for second place. DEL RIO, Texas – Despite what he called a “frustrating” day on Texas’ Lake Amistad, Steve Kennedy of Auburn, Ala., continued to lead the 108-pro field of the Bassmaster Elite Series “Battle on the Border presented by Longhorn,” but only by 9 ounces.

With a combined weight of 53 pounds, 0 ounces for the first two days, Kennedy’s slim lead held off two challengers: Scott Campbell of Springfield, Mo., and two-time Bassmaster Angler of the Year Gary Klein, who tied for second with 52-7.

With 52-1, 2006 Bassmaster Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli moved up from ninth to fourth. Three-time Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam captured fifth place with 51-0.

The 2007 Elite event pays a total purse of $673,150 to the top 50 pros, including a $100,000 first prize. Fishing fans can catch all of the on-the-water action on The Bassmasters on Saturday March 17 at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2.

The first-day leader, Kennedy wasn’t able on Friday to duplicate his Thursday success with a swimbait, a new type of lure for him.

“I just didn’t get the big bites that I did yesterday with the swimbait,” said Kennedy, who was the 2006 Toyota Rookie of the Year. “I have absolutely no game plan for tomorrow. I just hope the fish move up shallow so I have a chance.”

With the field cut to the top 50 for Saturday’s round, the pros are trying to figure out the changing fishery of Amistad, especially how to track bass in the rapidly rising water temperatures.

Though Campbell managed to stay in second, his Friday catch was 19 pounds, 9 ounces below his Thursday bag. His struggles were similar to Kennedy’s in that both relied on a swimbait to entice bigger bass.

“I caught a big fish first thing in the morning and I really felt it was going to be a similar day to yesterday,” the 24-year-old said. “But the wind didn’t blow enough and the water temperatures are rising, causing the fish to move in shallow.”

Klein was more consistent. The Weatherford, Texas, pro targeted deep fish for his two daily limits, each over 25 pounds.

“I feel like I could be sitting at 60 pounds but I blew some opportunities,” the 49-year-old said. “My bite is going away a little, so I think I will have to run all new water tomorrow and fish shallow.”

Other anglers who finished above the 50th-place cutline included 1999 Bassmaster Classic champ Davy Hite in 11th with 48-0; Bassmaster Elite Series rookie Matthew Sphar in 23rd with 43-10; and 2006 “Battle on the Border” champion Ish Monroe who with 43-3 sat in 26th place.

Leading the co-angler division was Texan David Stewart with 37 pounds, 13 ounces. He held off fellow Texan Dennis Lala, who had 35-8, and New Mexico’s Franco Vallejos, in third with 35-3.

Day 3: Alabama Rookie Remitz Storms Into Lead

DEL RIO, Texas – Competing in his first Bassmaster Elite Series event, Huntsville, Ala., pro Derek Remitz scored the Saturday lead at the “Battle on the Border presented by Longhorn” on Lake Amistad in Texas.

Building his three-day total to 80 pounds, 1 ounce, the 24-year-old Elite Series rookie replaced Alabama pro Steve Kennedy in the top spot. After leading two days, Kennedy dropped one notch in the standings with his three-day total of 77-2.

Remitz’s first-day finish gave little sign that he would be leading by the third day: His Thursday total of 20 pounds, 3 ounces, put him in 37th. But on Friday, he shot up to seventh after catching 29 pounds, 7 ounces. Then he brought 30 pounds, 7 ounces to the scales Saturday, besting Kennedy by almost three pounds.

To claim the $100,000 top prize, Remitz will have to hold off his fellow Elite 12 pros, the anglers who earned a spot for the final day of competition Sunday.

Remitz will be up against a star-studded field that includes 2006 Toyota Rookie of the Year Kennedy; 2006 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli, in third with 76-4; three-time Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam, in seventh with 68-4; and defending “Battle on the Border” champion Ish Monroe, who was last over the cutline with 66-9.

The season-opening Elite event pays a total purse of $673,150 to the top 50 pros. Fishing fans can catch all of the on-the-water action on The Bassmasters Saturday, March 17, at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2.

“This is something that you always dream about,” said Remitz, who recently moved from Texas to Alabama to be better positioned for travel to all 2007 Elite Series events. “It’s almost unreal and I am just in shock right now. But I am a pretty mellow guy and I think I can fight off the nerves.”

Kennedy said he was eager for the thunderstorms and cloud cover forecast for Sunday.

"The weather should make them bite tomorrow,” the 37-year-old said Saturday evening. “Today, they weren’t that interested in anything I threw at them.”

Texan Todd Faircloth jumped 35 places into fourth after boating 36 pounds, 7 ounces on Saturday for a three-day total of 75-1. His limit included a 10-11 lunker for Purolator Big Bass Honors and a $1,000 premium.

The 31-year-old pro said he caught four of his fish in an incredible 15-minute stretch.

“It all happened so quick that it seems like a dream,” Faircloth said. “I am still shaking.”

Oklahoma’s Edwin Evers, with 71-4, rounded out the top five.

The co-angler competition ended Saturday with Seiji Kato of Outsu, Japan, emerging as the winner. His total of 48 pounds, 8 ounces, bested New Mexico’s Franco Vallejos (46-3) and Texan Dennis Lala (44-8).

Kato took home a fully rigged Triton/Mercury boat package valued at $50,000.

Day 4: Alabama Rookie Remitz is Amistad Champion

Derek RemitzDEL RIO, Texas – Only 24 years old and a Bassmaster Elite Series rookie, Madison, Ala., pro Derek Remitz bested 107 of the world’s best anglers Sunday by winning the “Battle on the Border presented by Longhorn” with a four-day total of 111 pounds, 7 ounces.

Remitz won the season-opening event on Texas’ Lake Amistad by nearly eight pounds over 2006 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli, who finished second with 103 pounds, 11 ounces.

Iaconelli and Remitz were two of four anglers to post a four-day total weight of more than 100 pounds.

Fishing fans can catch all of the on-the-water action and details of Remitz’s winning pattern on The Bassmasters Saturday, March 17, at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2.

“I am excited to think I’ll be watching myself on ESPN2,” Remitz said. “I watch The Bassmasters every weekend, so I think it will be a little surreal to see myself on the program.”

For all four days of competition, Remitz worked a 3/4-ounce Omega football jig on flats next to underwater bluffs. He said he found eight or nine areas in a productive practice period and exclusively fished those areas during the competition.

Remitz quietly moved up the leaderboard after finishing in 37th place after the first day of competition. He posted three consecutive limits weighing more than 29 pounds. His final-day weight of 31 pounds, 6 ounces was the heaviest.

He earned $100,000 with the win, doubling his total BASS earnings. The rookie qualified for the 2007 Elite Series via his first-place points finish in the 2006 Bassmaster Northern Tour. He recently moved from Texas to Alabama to be more centrally located to travel to the 11 Elite Series events in 2007.

“This is the way you want to start off the Elite Series,” said Remitz, who scored the Purolator Big Bass on Sunday, an 8-11 lunker. “This is absolutely unbelievable. I guess this will sink in during the next few days but it hasn’t hit me yet.”

Despite missing out on his sixth BASS win, Iaconelli was satisfied with his runner-up finish on famed Amistad.

"I did the best I could do in this event,” the 2003 Bassmaster Classic champion said. “I just got beat. I’m pretty satisfied with my finish, though. Anytime I can do well in one of the early-season events, it’s almost a bonus for me.”

Iaconelli worked two baits the entire tournament; a Berkley PowerBait Beast thrown to trees, and a swimbait around trees.

Rounding out the top five were Steve Kennedy of Auburn, Ala., with 101 pounds, 10 ounces in third; Todd Faircloth of Jasper, Texas, with 100 pounds, 5 ounces in fourth; and Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., with 90 pounds, 13 ounces. 2006 “Battle on the Border” champion Ish Monroe of Hughson, Calif., finished sixth with 87 pounds, 13 ounces.

‘Battle on the Border presented by Longhorn” paid a total of $673,150 in cash to the top 50 Elite pros. Pros also earned points that count toward winning the season’s-end title of Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year.

The next stop for the 108 Elite Series pros is Stockton, Calif., for the “Duel in the Delta” on the California Delta, March 22-25.
