Elite Series pros are ready for the second stop of the season, the Duel on
the Delta presented by Mahindra Tractors in Stockton, Calif. The winner will
receive $100,000 with $673,150 in cash awarded to the top 50 Elite pros as
well as valuable points towards qualifying in the Bassmaster Majors and the
race for the Bassmaster Angler of the Year award. Elite Series pros Mark
Tyler, Scott Campbell and Greg Gutierrez share their California Delta
knowledge.
What’s at stake: $673,150 in cash to the top 50 Elite pros and valuable
points towards qualifying in the Bassmaster Majors and the race for the
Bassmaster Angler of the Year award. The top 50 co-anglers compete for $122,
250 in cash and merchandise.
Telecast: The “Duel on the Delta presented by Mahindra Tractors” will be
aired on The Bassmasters on March 31 at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
The Pros Said It
“The lake is a lot different than when I lived here and I’m trying to figure
out what the current conditions are. The conditions seem to be in their
prime and it’s abnormally warm for this time of year. I would expect big
things out of this event. Who’s going to catch them? I don’t know, but
someone will find them. I have a lot of practice left to go and I’m still
hunting for them.”- One-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier, ranked 83rd on
the Bassmaster Elite Series Power Index, Mark Tyler, 34, Vian, Okla.
“The fishery here is unbelievable. My first fish on the Delta was 9 and 1/2
pounds yesterday morning. I was stoked coming in here before, and after the
first one I caught, I could hardly stand it. It was a good way to start the
morning. You can do just about anything you want to catch fish here. I think
the anglers that are keying on the bedding fish are going to be
successful.”– Bassmaster Elite Series rookie Scott Campbell, 24,
Springfield, Mo.
“I was expecting the fishing to be a little better than what it is right
now. I’m not sure if the pressure from the tournament last week is shutting
them down, but I’m having trouble finding a lot of quality fish. There are
areas holding pockets of fish and I’m hoping to run into one. I’m covering
lots of water trying to find a group that are getting ready to move up and
spawn, but the big waves of spawning bass haven’t hit yet.” –Two-time
Bassmaster Classic qualifier ranked 21st on the Bassmaster Elite Series
Power Index, Greg Gutierrez, 45, Red Bluff, Calif.
The Strategy
Tyler: Tyler’s primary pattern is flipping for both spawning and pre-spawn
bass. He hasn’t found a specific sweet spot yet and plans to cover a lot of
water during the tournament.
Campbell: Campbell is concentrating on what backwater areas – locations on
the Delta unaffected by the tide or current and where the bass are heading
before they spawn. Specifically, Campbell is targeting staging bass before
they move onto the beds. He predicts 16 to 17 pounds a day will make the cut
to the top 50 and the winning weight will be close to 100 pounds.
Gutierrez: Gutierrez is searching for several areas he can run to throughout
the day. He describes the bass as moving with the tide and is using a
variety of lures including a crankbait, Senko and drop-shot rig. He expects
17 to 23 pounds a day will win the tournament.

Day 1: Mark Tyler Takes Day One Lead on the Delta
Back to top
STOCKTON,
Calif. – A former California resident, Bassmaster Elite Series pro Mark
Tyler loves the Golden State. The 34-year-old, whose lone BASS win was in
California on Clear Lake in 2003, stormed out to the lead at the “Duel on
the Delta presented by Mahindra Tractors” with 23 pounds, 15 ounces
Thursday, besting Alabaman and 2007 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the
Year leader Derek Remitz by a mere eight ounces.
Tyler, who now resides in Vian, Okla., has had considerable success on the
California Delta in the past. The massive fishery was the site of his
Bassmaster Open record heaviest bass of 14-9. On Thursday, he boated the
Purolator Big Bass of the Day- a 10-6 lunker.
Fishing fans can catch all of the on-the-water action on The Bassmasters
Saturday, March 31, at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
Tyler built a respectable limit by 10:30 a.m., and anchored his bag with the
big bass at 12:30 p.m.
“Look at me, I’m still shaking, and I caught it three hours ago,” Tyler
said. “My day really started out slow, and then the bite turned on. It was a
great day.”
Tyler played it close to the vest on the details of his leading pattern, but
did say he was looking forward to Friday. He is slated for a later launch
time and feels that the tides will play into his favor.
Meanwhile, Remitz built on his momentum after a season-opening victory at
Lake Amistad just two weeks ago. The 24-year-old is using a similar bait to
the Omega football jig he used for victory at Amistad.
“I just went fishing today,” said Remitz, who is also leading the Toyota
Rookie of the Year race. “I had a very difficult practice, but I
concentrated on one of the few areas I caught fish in practice where some
larger females are located in deeper areas adjacent to spawning flats.”
Finishing in third was Brent Chapman of Lake Quivira, Kan., with 22 pounds,
12 ounces. The 34-year-old made a long run to his honey hole- an area that
he shared with three-time Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Kevin
VanDam.
“I had three fish in my livewell in the middle of the day and was thinking
about leaving,” Chapman said. “Then I saw Kevin [Van Dam] land a
four-pounder, so I stuck it out. I’m sure glad I did”
Rounding out the top five was Jeff Reynolds (22-11) of Idabel, Okla., and
Bernie Schultz (22-10) of Gainesville, Fla.
Leading the co-angler division of the event was retired firefighter Ken Eddy
(19-6) of nearby Madera, Calif., who held a more than two-pound lead over
fellow Californians Gary Morris (16-15) of Tracy and Gerry Johnson (16-6) of
Modesto.
Day Two of the “Duel on the Delta” presented by Mahindra Tractors will begin
Friday from Stockton’s Weber Point at 6:50 a.m. PT. Weigh-ins begin at 3:00
p.m. PT and can be viewed at www.espnoutdoors.com.

Day 2: Remitz Continues Hot Streak at Duel on the
Delta
STOCKTON,
Calif. – Madison, Ala., rookie Derek Remitz continued his first-year
domination of the 2007 Bassmaster Elite Series, grabbing the Day 2 lead at
the Duel on the Delta presented by Mahindra Tractors with a 27-pound,
9-ounce limit and finishing Friday with 50 pounds, 14 ounces. Fellow Alabama
Elite pro Aaron Martens of Leeds, trails by a mere three ounces with 50-11.
The 24-year-old Remitz is in a rare position for a rookie. The former
sod-farmer led the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year rankings and
the 2007 Toyota Rookie of the Year race after his season-opening win on
Texas’ Lake Amistad and is poised to build on his lead with a stellar
performance on the California Delta.
Fishing fans can catch all of the on-the-water action on The Bassmasters
Saturday, March 31, at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2. The winner of the event will
receive a $100,000 top prize.
The second tournament on the Elite Series is shaping into a battle between
Remitz and 2005 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Martens. The duo
sits more than eight pounds ahead of nearest finisher Jared Lintner of
Arroyo Grande, Calif., who had 42 pounds, 0 ounces.
Remitz started Friday with only one keeper fish in his livewell until
capitalizing on a mid-day run that started around 11 a.m. He stayed close to
his opening spot but after finding little success, he looked for new water.
He was working an Omega jig - the same bait he primarily threw in his win on
Amistad - slowly around precise pieces of structure
“I’m beginning to recognize subtle hints that are keys to my pattern, and it
relates to slight differences in the bottom, or a certain kind of grass,”
Remitz said.
Martens has had considerable success in the state of California scoring all
three of his BASS victories in the Golden State. Martens’ last BASS win came
on Clear Lake in April of 2002 and he also was victorious on Lake Shasta and
Lake Oroville.
“I’ve got them figured out now,” Martens said exuding confidence. “It’s just
up to me to finish it off.”
Similar to Remitz, Martens said that he caught all of his 30-pound, 10-ounce
limit on new areas including a 11-pound, 2-ounce Purolator Big Bass, which
earned him a $1000 premium.
Martens played it close to the vest on his pattern information, but did said
he was fishing slowly.
Rounding out the top five were Thursday leader Mark Tyler, of Vian, Okla.,
in fourth with 40 pounds, 8 ounces, and Rick Morris of Virginia Beach, Va.,
fifth with 39 pounds, 8 ounces. Only the top 50 anglers will participate
Saturday.
Leading the co-angler division was Gerry Johnson of Modesto, Calif., with 39
pounds, 8 ounces. Trailing Johnson was Californians Robby Chikasawa (28-0)
of Sacramento in second, and Sal Herrera (27-10) of Discovery Bay, in third.

Day 3: Aaron Martens Takes the Lead on the Delta
Back to top
STOCKTON,
Calif. – California native Aaron Martens still loves the state of California
despite recently relocating to Leeds, Ala. The 34-year-old is seeking his
fourth BASS win in the Golden State at the Duel on the Delta presented by
Mahindra Tractors this week and currently leads the Bassmaster Elite Series
tournament with 69 pounds, 13 ounces. Current Toyota Tundra Bassmaster
Angler of the Year points leader Derek Remitz, an Elite rookie, sits in
second with 66 pounds, 11 ounces.
Martens has gradually moved up the leaderboard after starting the tournament
Thursday in 10th place. After catching more than 30 pounds Friday and
surging to second, it was a 19-pound, 2-ounce limit that propelled him to
the lead Saturday.
Fishing fans can see the final-day battle between Martens and Remitz on
ESPN2 Saturday, March 31 at 9:00 a.m. ET. The top prize for the event is
$100,000.
Martens has used an unconventional pattern for the California Delta, but
plans to stick with his pattern on Sunday. He is working a small worm around
spawning areas and sparse tulles.
“I used light line and a spinning rod all day,” said the 2005 Toyota Tundra
Bassmaster Angler of the Year. “The key is to fish very slowly and stick
with your spots. I only moved 50 yards from my preliminary spot by noon
today.”
Remitz and Martens have run away from the rest of the field as the closest
competitor, Texan James Niggemeyer, sits more than 10 pounds behind the duo.
Both are fishing the Frank’s Tract area of the Delta, but are using
different approaches.
After a dismal practice period, Remitz of Madison, Ala., expected very
little success at the Delta after his season-opening win at Texas’ Lake
Amistad. But the former sod farmer is satisfied with his second-place
showing thus far.
He has been working both a Rat-L-Trap and a jig slowly and methodically
around precise pieces of cover.
“I am going to really slow it down tomorrow [Sunday],” the 24-year-old said.
“If I don’t have a decent limit by 10 a.m. tomorrow, I will be forced to
change areas.”
Rounding out the top five were Niggemeyer of Van, Texas, with 56 pounds, 2
ounces; Jeff Reynolds of Idabel, Okla., with 55 pounds, 0 ounces; and Brent
Chapman of Lake Quivira, Kansas, with 52 pounds, 14 ounces.
Only the top 12 anglers will participate tomorrow. Two Californians
qualified for final-day action: Jared Lintner of Arroyo Grande, finished in
ninth with 51 pounds, 13 ounces, and Skeet Reese of Auburn, was in 11th with
51 pounds, 2 ounces.
Winning the co-angler division was Gerry Johnson of Modesto, Calif., with 49
pounds, 0 ounces. The Golden State angler claimed a Triton/Mercury rig
valued at $50,000.
Johnson held off two other California anglers: Robby Chikasawa of
Sacramento, who finished with 47 pounds, 14 ounces and Lee Poel of San Jose,
with 35 pounds, 2 ounces. Chikasaswa earned a Triton/Mercury rig valued at
$25,000.

Day 4: Aaron Martens Wins Duel on the Delta
Back to top
STOCKTON,
Calif. – Castaic native Aaron Martens now of Leeds, Ala., capped off a week
to remember Sunday winning the Bassmaster Elite Series “Duel on the Delta
presented by Mahindra Tractors” with 85 pounds, 12 ounces over Elite rookie
Derek Remitz of Madison, Ala., who finished in second with 78 pounds, 6
ounces. On Tuesday, Martens’ wife Lesley had the couple’s second child, a
boy named Spencer.
The 34-year-old bested Remitz in addition to hard-charging Stephen Browning
of Hot Springs, Ark., who finished in third with 75 pounds, 8 ounces.
Fishing fans can see all the details of Martens’ winning pattern on ESPN2
Saturday March 31 at 9 a.m. ET.
“If there was one place on the entire Earth that I could pick to win, it
would be the California Delta,” Martens said. “Finally winning here is an
amazing feeling. Heading into the tournament, I just wanted to finish in the
top 50.”
With the Elite Series win, his fourth BASS win, Martens has amassed more
than $1 million in BASS career earnings. He is the 18th member of that
prestigious club.
Martens has scored all four BASS victories in the state of California and
will look to capture a fifth win in the Golden State at the next Elite
Series event on Clear Lake starting Thursday March 29.
Martens primarily concentrated on a short stretch of cover located in the
Frank’s Tract area. He worked a four-inch and three-inch worm in his
trademark color of Aaron’s magic on drop-shot rigs to sparse tulles.
Remitz fished in the same Frank’s Tract area as Martens for much of the
tournament. The 24-year-old continued an unprecedented rookie run after
taking victory in the season-opening Elite event on Texas’ Lake Amistad.
“I am really pleased with my finish here,” said Remitz. “I didn’t have a
good practice, so I am absolutely satisfied with second-place.”
Remitz was working a red Rat-L-Trap around grass flats near spawning areas
and caught the majority of his bigger keeper fish on small underwater
structure changes with a jig.
Heading into the final day of action, it looked to be a two-angler race
between Remitz and Martens. But the 40-year-old Browning posted the heaviest
limit of the day at 24 pounds, 4 ounces, and put some pressure on the
leaders.
Rounding out the top five were Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., with 74
pounds, 6 ounces, and Brent Chapman of Lake Quivira, Kansas, with 73 pounds,
12 ounces. Chapman scored the Purolator Big Bass of the Day, a 9-9 lunker,
and earned the $1,000 premium.
