Day 1: Kennedy Holds 4-Ounce Lead on Champlain
Back to Top
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Steve Kennedy traveled as far south as he
could go Thursday on Lake Champlain and the long trip was worth it: The
Auburn, Ala., angler caught a 21-pound, 6-ounce limit to hold a 4-ounce lead
over Timmy Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., after the first day of the
Bassmaster Elite Series Champion’s Choice presented by Toyota Tundra.
The Champion’s Choice presented by Toyota Tundra will be aired on The
Bassmasters at 9 a.m. ET July 21 on ESPN2. The eighth event of the Elite
Series season will end Sunday with a $100,000 prize for the winner.
Kennedy, last year’s Toyota Rookie of the Year on the Elite Series, scored
his first career win earlier this year at California’s Clear Lake, setting
the BASS all-time record weight for a four-day tournament with more than 122
pounds.
Thursday on Champlain he targeted largemouth bass while many anglers in the
field fished for smallmouths.
“I had a great practice and I really didn’t think it was all that good
today, so I’m excited to have what I have,” said Kennedy. “I thought I could
have about a 20-pound bag, so I caught about what I expected. I didn’t get
nearly as many big bites as I thought I would, but I had a 5-5 and that
helped the average a little.”
The 5-pound, 5-ounce bass Kennedy boated was taken in the massive lake’s
South Bay area, a trip of several hours from the Plattsburgh, N.Y., launch
point. “It was worth the ride,” he said.
“There’s a lot of guys doing what I’m doing, but I worked hard on getting a
different color (bait) than everybody else is throwing,” said Kennedy. “My
bait is definitely a little different and I think it’s got something to do
with the bigger bite.”
Horton, a three-time BASS winner, said he caught the majority of his 21
pounds, 2 ounces on a Zara Spook, Vibra King Tube and Booyah jig.
“I caught them at different stages of the day and had three really good
bites,” said Horton. “I’m looking forward to (Friday) to see how things
shake out. I’ll try the same things.”
Scott Rook of Little Rock, Ark., was third with 19 pounds, 6 ounces. Tied
for fourth with 18 pounds, 2 ounces were 1999 Bassmaster Classic champion
Davy Hite of Ninety Six, S.C., and Elite Series rookie Bryan Hudgins of
Orange Park, Fla. Denny Brauer of Camdenton, Mo., who won the 2006
Champion’s Choice, was sixth with 17 pounds, 14 ounces.
Kevin VanDam, leader of the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year
standings, was 22nd with 16 pounds, 3 ounces. Skeet Reese, who is in second
place in the AOY race, was 21st with 16 pounds, four ounces.
In the co-angler division, New Yorker Craig Daino led the field competing
for a Triton/Mercury boat package valued at $50,000. He weighed in 16
pounds, 9 ounces. Trailing Daino were Lawrence Laclair of New York with 15
pounds, 15 ounces; and Brandon Pedigo of Oklahoma with 15 pounds, 12 ounces.

Day 2: Horton Surges into a Commanding Lead on
Champlain
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With a 24-pound, 12-ounce limit of
largemouth bass, Timmy Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., took over the lead
Friday in the Bassmaster Elite Series Champion’s Choice presented by Toyota
Tundra on Lake Champlain. With a two-day total of 45 pounds, 14 ounces,
Horton was ahead by more than 6 pounds, surpassing first-day leader Steve
Kennedy of Auburn, Ala., who had 39 pounds, 4 ounces.
The Champion’s Choice presented by Toyota Tundra will be aired on The
Bassmasters at 9 a.m. ET July 21 on ESPN2. The eighth event of the Elite
Series season will end Sunday with a $100,000 prize for the winner.
Horton, who had been 4 ounces behind Kennedy after the first day of
competition, said he boated most of his Friday weight by 9:30 a.m., then
spent the rest of the day locating fish that may help him over the final two
days of the tournament as he seeks his first BASS win since 2004.
“It went really well and I hope it will last until Sunday,” said Horton, the
2000 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year. “What a lake. That’s the
most fun I’ve had in a very long time. I went to my first spot and caught
about 20 pounds. Then I hit one area that was really better than it had been
the first day. It had big ones.
“I kind of practiced after that, which made for a long day, but still you
just don’t go fish places when you’ve got a good bag.”
Horton said a Booyah jig was his primary lure on Friday.
Kennedy, who boated 17 pounds, 14 ounces Friday, fell short of his Day 1 bag
of 21 pounds, 6 ounces. “I fished a little bit differently (Friday) and
maybe that’s why I had a little less weight,” he said.
The 2006 Toyota Rookie of the Year, Kennedy again traveled to the far
southern end of Lake Champlain in search of largemouth bass. He caught most
of his weight in South Bay, the same place he caught a 5-pound, 5-ounce
largemouth on Thursday.
“I’m committed to that (area) because I can’t catch one up north,” Kennedy
said.
A 5-pound, 7-ounce bass helped Fred Roumbanis of Auburn, Calif., move into
third place with 37 pounds, 4 ounces, while Steve Daniel of Clewiston, Fla.,
was fourth with 35 pounds, 1 ounce. Four-time Bassmaster Classic champion
Rick Clunn of Ava, Mo., was fifth with 34 pounds, 4 ounces.
Kevin VanDam, leader of the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year
race, was 18th with 32 pounds, while Skeet Reese, who is in second place in
the AOY standings, moved from 21st to a tie for 10th Friday with 33 pounds,
1 ounce.
The top 50 anglers compete Saturday. The field cuts to 12 for the final day.
In the co-angler division, Marc Lamphier of Vermont led the field competing
for a Triton/Mercury boat package valued at $50,000 with 28 pounds, 2
ounces. Trailing were George Fiorille of New York with 25 pounds, 1 ounce;
and Joel Etheredge of Alabama with 24 pounds, 14 ounces.
Fishing fans can watch live, streaming video of the daily weigh-ins of the
Champion’s Choice presented by Toyota Tundra at www.ESPNOutdoors.com
beginning at 3 p.m. ET. On Sunday, fans can also monitor

Day 3: Horton Widens Lead to Almost 10 Pounds on
Champlain
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Pursuing his first BASS tournament
victory since 2004, Timmy Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., padded his lead
Saturday in the Bassmaster Elite Series Champion’s Choice presented by
Toyota Tundra on Lake Champlain by boating 18 pounds, 8 ounces of largemouth
bass. Horton’s total heading into the final day of competition was 64
pounds, 6 ounces, almost 10 pounds in front of Steve Kennedy of Auburn,
Ala., in second with 54 pounds, 9 ounces.
The top 12 anglers from the original field of 108 will compete Sunday for
the $100,000 first prize. Fishing fans can watch the action on The
Bassmasters on ESPN2 Saturday, July 21, at 9 a.m. ET.
The 34-year-old Horton, who was the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the
Year in 2000 and is a seven-time Bassmaster Classic contender, is ready for
a win. The most recent of his three BASS titles was in November 2004 on
Florida’s Lake Okeechobee.
“Consistency-wise, I haven’t really been in a dry spell,” said Horton. “I
haven’t missed a Classic in my career but from a win standpoint it’s been a
couple of years. I’d really like to break that streak if I could.”
As he had in the first two days of competition, Horton used a Booyah
Football Head jig Saturday in several productive spots far south of the
tournament’s Plattsburgh, N.Y., launch point. He had most of his weight in
the boat by 7:30 a.m.
“That’s really a neat spot and I hope I can go down there and get 15
(pounds) off of it (Sunday),” he said. “Then if I can pick up another fish
here or there, I’ll feel pretty good about it.”
Horton said he spent part of Saturday trying some smallmouth bass spots
north of Plattsburgh. He said he wanted to reserve his largemouth spots for
the final day.
“It’s one of the biggest strategies that you have,” he added. “You don’t
just go sit on them. When you’ve got them, you spend a lot of time not
catching them because you are looking for new areas. It’s very important to
keep looking.”
Kennedy, who led the first day but fell further behind Horton Saturday,
tried some of his favorite spots in the far southern end of the lake but has
a different strategy for Sunday.
“There are a couple of spots that I haven’t tried,” he said. “They might
have a big one, you never know. I’m going to try maybe an hour on each one.”
Kennedy revealed that he has been fishing with a black frog with the tails
altered to blue.
“I didn’t feel like I had all that good a day,” he said of his 13-pound,
5-ounce catch. “I struggled. I stopped on my best spot and caught three fish
the last 10 minutes. I was lucky to have what I have because I never got a
big bite.”
Britt Myers of Mount Holly, N.C., moved to third in the standings with 51
pounds, 14 ounces. Fred Roumbanis of Auburn, Calif., held tight to third
place with 51 pounds, 9 ounces. Peter Thliveros of Jacksonville, Fla., moved
up from 22nd into fifth place with 50 pounds, 13 ounces.
The other seven Elite anglers who made the top 12 to compete on Sunday were
Skeet Reese, Yusuke Miyazaki, Shaw Grigsby Jr., Tommy Biffle, Takahiro
Omori, Cliff Pace and Bradley Hallman.
Reese has an opportunity to overtake Kevin VanDam in the Toyota Tundra
Angler of the Year race. VanDam finished 27th and did not make the final
cut. Reese is second to VanDam’s lead in the AOY standings.
Vermont’s Marc Lamphier won the co-angler side of the tournament and a
Triton/Mercury boat package valued at $50,000. Lamphier boated 41 pounds, 11
ounces, beating the 39 pounds, 7 ounces caught by runner-up James Hill of
Alabama. Larry Triplett of Colorado finished third with 37 pounds, 8 ounces.
Fishing fans can watch live, streaming video of Sunday’s weigh-in of the
Champion’s Choice presented by Toyota Tundra at www.ESPNOutdoors.com
beginning at 3 p.m. ET. Fans can also monitor www.ESPNOutdoors.com

Day 4: Horton Scores First Elite Series Win
Back to Top
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Using only a fraction of his allotted
fishing time Sunday, Timmy Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., cruised to his
first Bassmaster Elite Series win in the Champion’s Choice presented by
Toyota Tundra at Lake Champlain, finishing with a four-day weight of 83
pounds, 10 ounces for a victory of nearly 13 pounds over Skeet Reese of
Auburn, Calif.
But Reese was also a winner Sunday: His runner-up finish propelled him past
Kevin VanDam and into the lead in the Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year
standings. With three tournaments left in the 11-event Elite Series season,
Reese is 12 points in front of VanDam in the battle for the $125,000 AOY
title. The top 50 anglers will share in a total purse of $601,000.
Horton collected $109,000 Sunday. Fishing fans can watch all the action of
the Champion’s Choice presented by Toyota Tundra on The Bassmasters
Saturday, July 21, at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
Horton, who entered the final day with a 10-pound lead, made a 90-minute run
south on Lake Champlain after the 5:40 a.m. launch and was back at the
Plattsburgh, N.Y. Boat Basin by 10 a.m., well ahead of his scheduled
check-in time of 3:15 p.m. With a five-fish limit of 19 pounds, 4 ounces of
largemouth bass boated in one hour of fishing, he decided to play it safe
and get back to the dock.
“I knew a 30-pound bag was virtually impossible,” said Horton, the 2000
Bassmaster Angler of the Year who scored the fourth BASS win of his career
on Sunday. “I’ve never come in early like that before, but I thought about
it and one thing I was really worried about was the wind getting up and not
being able to get back in.”
Horton said all his fish were caught on a Booyah Football Head jig. He said
he managed his best spots on the massive lake over the three previous days
and saved his most productive spot for Sunday.
“I fished for an hour and that was absolutely the most unbelievable hour
I’ve ever had,” he said. “I wish everybody who enjoys fishing could have a
chance to hit a spot like that. It was incredible and was like experiencing
fishing for the first time. It was total bliss.”
Reese, who was in fourth place entering the final day, boated the largest
weight of the final day — 20 pounds, 4 ounces — to finish second. He said he
caught all of his fish Sunday cranking a Lucky Craft BDS 3 on the outside
edge of grass.
“I found a school the second day of the tournament and I didn’t know what I
had found,” said Reese. “I found out a little bit more (Saturday) and I
caught 17 pounds off of it, but I didn’t start on it until later. So I
started on that school (Sunday) and I caught 20 pounds. When you got around
them, they let you know. It was fun.”
He said he plans to take the Angler of the Year race one day at a time over
the final three tournaments.
“That’s all I can do,” he added. “There’s still 12 days of competition left
and I hope I fish all 12 days. My ultimate goal in tournament fishing is to
achieve that title. I hope I’m able to get it.”
Steve Kennedy of Auburn, Ala., who led the first day and held second place
Friday and Saturday, finished third with 68 pounds, 13 ounces. Tommy Biffle
of Wagoner, Okla., was fourth with 68 pounds, 11 ounces; and Cliff Pace of
Petal, Miss., rounded out the top five with 67 pounds, 2 ounces.
The next Bassmaster Elite Series tournament is July 19-22 on Lake Erie and
the Niagara River out of Buffalo, N.Y.
