Preview: Classic Pros Test Lay Lake with Good
Results
BIRMINGHAM,
Ala. — None of the hundreds of casts made by the 50 contenders in the 37th
annual Bassmaster Classic on Wednesday counted for anything official. But
they were still important because the collective wisdom gained during this
lone day of practice provided them with a good idea of what to expect when
competition begins on Friday.
And what they found has most of the field predicting great fishing action
during the world-championship event Friday through Sunday.
After taking Thursday off for various activities that include Media Day
duties, the pros will be launched into the pressure cooker known as the
Classic Friday morning with three days to find the 15 largest bass possible
in Lay Lake. And after spending eight hours on the 12,000-acre central
Alabama lake, they have a better sense of what awaits them in the battle for
bass fishing's most prestigious title and a payday of $500,000.
The Classic contenders were encouraged and enthused about a developing
warming trend that has increased the lake’s water temperature as much as 10
degrees since last week’s three-day scouting session. The major increase in
temperature is expected to bring more fish shallow and make them more
active. The temperature rise could bring largemouth bass into play in the
pros’ strategies despite the fact that Lay Lake has a large population of
spotted bass.
Wednesday’s weather was dominated by rain and overcast conditions.
Here’s a sampling of what the Classic pros learned and accomplished during
Wednesday’s practice round:
Boyd Duckett, Dempolis, Ala., Classic rookie and one of the
pre-Classic favorites: “The water is warming up nice. I found some 54-,
55-degree water, but there’s no fish in it yet. I have to assume that we
will see a pretty good migration between now and Friday or during the
tournament. So that should make largemouth more of a factor instead of this
being more of a spot tournament.
“I got enough flipping bites that I could have caught a limit of largemouth
today. I was fully planning to fish for largemouth and now with the water
warming up I’m absolutely going to fish for largemouth.”
Mike McClelland, Bella Vista, Ark., fishing his fourth Classic: “It
was pretty much what I was expecting and hoping. I went a little bit
shallower today than where I had been catching them, but I can’t say I found
anything that really turned me on. I did catch a couple of largemouth a
little shallower than I caught them last week.
“There are going to be some fish move shallow this week, but I don‘t know if
it will be much of a factor. I really didn’t check my best places. I fished
a pattern around the kind of stuff I’d been fishing, but I didn’t get any
bites.”
Aaron Martens, Leeds, Ala., three-time Classic runner-up fishing his
eighth Classic: “I eliminated a lot of water today. I was kind of checking
stuff that I didn’t check last week. I went to a few areas and got bit
pretty quick, but I mainly just checked a few areas that I was wondering
about.
“It was a productive day. I learned what I’m not going to do in the
tournament. I think with the warming water the catch is about to be about
50-50 (largemouth and spots). When the water warms up they both bite
better.”
Dean Rojas, Lake Havasu, Ariz., fishing his sixth Classic: “I had a
fair practice day. I was looking to fish the baits and the areas I had
fished in practice to solidify what I am going to do in the tournament. That
worked out well and I look forward to the tournament.
“I think it’s going to be a combination of both (largemouth and spots). I
had both of them bite today so right now I’ll take whatever will bite. The
fishing will be good. I think everybody should come in with a limit.”
Kelly Jordon, Mineola, Texas, fishing his fifth Classic: “It was
pretty good. I tried my best pattern from last week and tried to expand it a
little bit. I did everything I set out to do.
“They’re biting better than they did last week. There’s going to be tons of
fish caught this week. I think you can probably catch them all over the
lake. I’m going to catch both (largemouth and spots). It would be nice to
have 12 pounds of spots in the first hour and then go head-hunting for
largemouth. I’m definitely going to spend a lot of time after largemouth.”
Mike Wurm, Hot Springs, Ark., fishing his fourth Classic: “It went
about like I expected. Maybe the fish were a little smaller than I expected
— the ones I did catch. However, I got quite a few bites and I feel pretty
comfortable I can catch a limit on Friday. I’m just not sure about the size.
“I did not check my three best spots. Today, the goal was to look at a few
places that I did not get to look at last week. So I tried a few things in
those areas to see what was up and then I found some more fish in another
area, which I feel good about.”
The casts start counting for real at 7 a.m. Friday when the Classic boats
are launched at Lay Lake’s Paradise Point Marina. Daily weigh-ins will be at
the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Arena.
Day 1: Alabama Pros Dominate Bassmaster Classic
Back to top
BIRMINGHAM,
Ala. — Three Alabama pros took the first step toward reversing the “Classic
curse” for homestate anglers. Thirty-six Bassmaster Classics have been
completed and an angler hailing from the host state of the Classic site has
never won the marquee event.
Cotton State anglers scored three of the top four positions with Classic
rookie Boyd Duckett from Demopolis in the lead. The winner of the event on
Alabama’s Lay Lake will take home the $500,000 top prize and the most
important title in competitive fishing.
Coverage of bass fishing’s equivalent to the Super Bowl kicks off Saturday
morning on ESPN2 at 7 a.m. ET. ESPN2 will air 10 ˝ hours of coverage over
Saturday and Sunday.
Duckett, who qualified for the Classic as well as the 2007 Bassmaster Elite
Series via his performance in the 2006 Bassmaster Southern Tour, boated five
bass weighing 19 pounds, 14 ounces. He leads Springville, Ala., angler Randy
Howell, who boated 17 pounds, 15 ounces, and California’s Skeet Reese with
17 pounds, 8 ounces.
Muscle Shoals, Ala., pro Tim Horton was in fourth with 17-5. Florida pro
Terry Scroggins rounded out the top five with 17 pounds, 0 ounces.
Duckett’s five-fish limit was anchored by an 8-pound, 2-ounce largemouth
that was the Purolator Big Bass of the Day, earning him a $1,000 premium.
“Obviously, that 8-pounder is what’s got me in the lead today,” said Duckett,
who has a wealth of experience on Lay Lake. “I tried to put myself in
position to get big bites. I hope I can keep executing when I get the chance
to put one in the boat.”
Duckett is fishing his first Classic. The 46-year-old said he made a
decision to target the lake’s largemouth bass instead of the fishery’s more
abundant spotted bass. He played it close to the vest on the specifics of
his leading pattern.
“I’m fishing a little bit different than the traditional Lay Lake patterns
most anglers fish this time of year,” he said. “Traditionally at Lay, you
fish a jig right in the heart of the grass. But that’s not what I’m doing.”
In contrast to Duckett, Howell is a veteran Bassmaster Elite Series
competitor who is fishing his sixth Classic and also holds a BASS win.
Howell and Reese were fishing in close proximity on 12,000-acre Lay.
“I’m fishing a jig, which is no secret,” Howell said. “There is not much
else you can do”
Reese, a two-time BASS winner and part of an emerging contingent of
successful West Coast anglers, surprised himself with a third-place start
after enduring the worst pre-Classic practice effort in his seven
appearances.
“When I started out this morning I had no areas that I felt were
productive,” the 37-year-old said. “I had one area where I caught two three-pounders
in practice. I only had five bites in two days of practice.”
There are nine Alabama pros participating in the 37th Classic. Warrior’s
Gerald Swindle is ninth with 14-10; Aaron Martens of Leeds and Prattville’s
Russ Lane are tied for 14th with 13-13.
After Saturday, the field will be cut to the top 25. Extensive Web coverage
of the event can be found on www.ESPNOutdoors.com and www.Bassmaster.com.

Day 2: Kevin VanDam Storms Into Classic Lead
Back to top
BIRMINGHAM,
Ala. — In a come-from-behind charge familiar to fishing fans, three-time
Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam moved up the
leaderboard with one of his patented moves Saturday, jumping from 19th place
into the lead at the 37th Bassmaster Classic on Alabama’s Lay Lake.
The Kalamazoo, Mich., Elite Series pro, who has amassed over $2 million in
BASS earnings, totaled 19 pounds, 14 ounces, Saturday to bring his two-day
total to 32-15. He built a 9-ounce lead over California’s Skeet Reese. The
top angler will take home a $500,000 top prize Sunday.
Coverage of bass fishing’s equivalent to the Super Bowl kicked off Saturday
morning on ESPN2 at 7 a.m. ET. ESPN2 will air 10 ˝ hours of coverage over
the three-day event and viewers can catch the action starting at 6:30 a.m.
ET. Sunday.
Alabama Elite Series pro Gerald Swindle’s Day 2 catch was disqualified
Saturday by BASS officials for violation of Rules 5i and 6ii. Swindle didn’t
make the top 25 cut and finished in 45th place. The applicable part of the
rules state: “Safe boat conduct must be observed at all times by
competitors.”
Rounding out the top five were Reese (32-6), Florida’s Terry Scroggins
(30-15), Alabama’s Boyd Duckett (30-13) and Alabama’s Tim Horton (29-11).
“This is what we live for,” VanDam said. “I was really disappointed on
Friday because I felt I had dug a hole for myself and these guys are too
good for you to leave anything on the table.
“Just getting to the Classic doesn’t satisfy me anymore. I always want to
put myself in a position to win and that’s what I’ve done.”
Reese is no stranger to winning BASS tournaments – he’s won two – but he has
yet to score a coveted Classic victory in seven tries.
“I have a spot where I caught a pretty quick limit the first day and I
fished there pretty much all day Saturday,” the 37-year-old said. “There are
some prime-looking areas around it, so I’ll go exploring.”
While Reese was pleasantly surprised with his tournament after an
unproductive practice period, to win the marquee event he will still have to
jump ahead of VanDam.
“The last thing I wanted to see is this guy [VanDam] catch almost 20 pounds
and leapfrog me in the standings,” Reese said. “He seems to always do that.”
Other Alabama anglers safely above the cutline are Steve Kennedy from
Auburn, Ala., in seventh; Randy Howell from Springville, Ala., in 10th;
Aaron Martens from Leeds, Ala., in 13th; and Russ Lane from Prattville,
Ala., in 25th.

Day 3: Duckett Wins Bassmaster Classic in First
Appearance
BIRMINGHAM,
Ala. — Boyd Duckett accomplished Sunday what no Bassmaster Classic angler
had been able to in the 37-year history of the marquee event. The Demopolis,
Ala., Bassmaster Elite Series pro became the first homestate angler to win
the Classic and the $500,000 top prize.
The 46-year-old brought in the final round’s biggest five-bass limit — 17
pounds, 13 ounces — to climb up from fourth place. His three-day total of
48-10 was enough to hold off California Bassmaster Elite Series angler Skeet
Reese by six ounces. ESPN2 aired 10 ˝ hours of coverage over the three-day
event on Alabama’s Lay Lake.
Reese, who was participating in his seventh Classic, brought in a limit of
15-14, but it was not enough to secure his first Classic championship. He
finished with 48-4.
Second-round leader and two-time Classic champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo,
Mich,, fell to third with 45-4. Indiana’s Terry McWilliams, a representative
of the BASS Federation Nation, the grassroots organization of BASS, finished
fourth with 45-3. Texan Gary Klein rounded out the top five with 44-5.
Duckett sealed his dramatic victory with the Purolator Big Bass of the Day
for which he earned a $1,000 premium — a 6-pound, 9-ounce largemouth —
caught at 2 p.m.
“I’m so proud I brought the Classic title to my home state,” he said. “It’s
every angler’s dream to be able to get here and to win it is just
fantastic.”
Duckett was among a contingent of nine Alabama pros in the Classic this week
and was one of the pre-Classic favorites because of his extensive experience
on Lay Lake. He used a lipless crankbait and flipped a Berkley Powerbait
Chigger Craw into grass .
Reese, competing in his eighth Classic, was disappointed at his second-place
finish.
“Second hurts, it really does,” said Reese, who also caught his limit of
bass on a Berkley Chigger Craw. “You don’t get that many opportunities to
win a Bassmaster Classic. This was a golden opportunity this week. But I
won’t say I let it slip away because I fished the best I could.”
With the third-place finish, VanDam, a three-time Toyota Tundra Bassmaster
Angler of the Year, opened up a larger lead in the BASS all-time money
earnings race over Missourri’s Denny Brauer. VanDam, 39, has amassed over $2
million in winnings but lamented the lost opportunity.
“I’ll be honest with you, I’m definitely disappointed,” he said. “But I
didn’t leave anything out there. I fished my guts out.”
