BASS Elite Series: Potomac River, MD

Elite Series Event # 10 of 11

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4

Day 1: Reese Leads Elite Series on Potomac

Skeet ReeseLA PLATA, Md. – Needing a top finish to improve his Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year chances, Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., satisfied his goal Thursday by catching 20 pounds, 5 ounces of bass at the Bassmaster Elite Series event on the Potomac River. Reese, a two-time BASS winner, leads the Capitol Clash presented by Advance Auto Parts by a mere 3 ounces over Texas veteran Gary Klein.

Fishing fans can catch all of the action on The Bassmasters and see which angler wins the $100,000 top prize at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, on ESPN2.

With the lead, Reese inches closer to his career goal, the Angler of the Year title. His closest competitor, Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., finished Thursday in 33rd place. If their positions hold heading into the final Bassmaster Elite Series event of the season on Florida’s Lake Toho, Reese will gain significant points.

“The Angler of the Year title has been the ultimate goal this season,” said Reese, 38. “In my mind, this is the most prestigious award in the sport and it would be a dream come true to finally win one.”

Reese has a successful resume on the Potomac River, having finished second in the Capitol Clash in 2006, third in 2000 and fourth in 1999. The close call on the Potomac in August 2006 kicked off a series of second-place finishes that season for Reese.

Reese, who was flipping to areas he didn’t want to reveal, scored seconds at the 2007 Bassmaster Classic as well as Elite Series events on California’s Clear Lake and New York’s Lake Champlain. Despite a measure of disappointment, the consistency has vaulted him into a solid lead in the Angler of the Year race.

“I feel comfortable on the Potomac,” said Reese, who won his second BASS event on Toho. “I just missed last year and I feel very good about my chances here.”

If Reese finishes in the top 50, his earnings from the event will vault him to more than $1 million in BASS career earnings. He would become the 20th BASS angler to accomplish the feat.

Klein, a two-time Bassmaster Angler of the Year, caught 20 pounds, 2 ounces, despite “not being on much.” The eight-time BASS winner, of Weatherford, Texas, landed an 8-pound, 2-ounce brute that was good enough for Purolator Big Bass honors and an extra $1,000.

Klein located a 100-yard stretch that remained productive throughout the day, and it surrendered the lunker around noon. Klein is committed to the area, which he has all to himself, as his attempts to find other productive spots have been fruitless.

“Staying stealth and making lengthy casts to targeted areas was a key for me today,” said Klein, 50. “These fish are very skittish right now and you have to be very careful out there to entice the big bites.”

In third, 2 pounds behind Reese, was Grant Goldbeck (18-5) of Gaithersburg, Md. Goldbeck, who has won many local tournament titles on the Potomac in past years, used his extensive local knowledge of the river to successfully utilize a different technique.

While much of the field is concentrating on the abundant Potomac grass, Goldbeck is working finesse baits in different locations.

In a tie for fourth with 18 pounds, 0 ounces, were defending Capitol Clash champion Kelly Jordon of Mineola, Texas, and Casey Ashley of Donalds, S.C., an Elite Series winner this season on Virginia’s Smith Mountain Lake.

In the co-angler division, James Hill of Alabama leads the chase for a Triton Boat package valued at $50,000 with 13 pounds, 6 ounces. Trailing Hill was Oklahoman Brandon Pedigo, with 12 pounds, 11 ounces, and Mike Acord of Pennsylvania with 11 pounds, 10 ounces.

As with every Elite-level tournament, www.ESPNOutdoors.com is providing live, streaming video of the daily weigh-ins. Additionally, visitors to the site can access analysis, photo galleries, blogs from Elite Series anglers and abundant coverage of events. On Sunday, fans can catch Hooked Up with ESPN2 Outdoors personalities Mark Zona and Tommy Sanders at 5:30 p.m. to preview the final weigh-in.

Day 2: Reese Maintains Lead on Potomac River

LA PLATA, Md. – Bassmaster Elite Series pro Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., is looking to put an exclamation point on his “ultimate goal” of winning the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year race. By opening up a more than 2-pound lead over Texan Kelly Jordon at the Capitol Clash presented by Advance Auto Parts on the Potomac River, Reese, who posted a two-day total of 35 pounds, 3 ounces, is looking to avenge a near miss last year at the Potomac and sew up his chances for the Angler of the Year title.

Fishing fans can catch all of the action on The Bassmasters and see which angler wins the $100,000 top prize at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, on ESPN2.

Reese, who caught 20 pounds, 5 ounces Thursday, was unable to duplicate the feat Friday, catching 14 pounds, 14 ounces. But weights were down across the board and Reese was able to increase his lead.

“I don’t know if I’m on the fish to win,” said Reese, 38. “But I will take what I have thus far. I have really struggled in the afternoon and that scares me a little.”

Reese, guaranteed to make the cut, will take home at least $10,000 in earnings, which will push his career BASS earnings to more than $1 million. He becomes the 20th BASS angler to accomplish the feat, which he described at the start of the season as a goal.

Last year on the Potomac, Reese missed scoring his third BASS win by 7 ounces as Jordon earned his fourth BASS win. Reese then finished in second place at the 2007 Bassmaster Classic and the Bassmaster Elite Series events on California’s Clear Lake and New York’s Lake Champlain.

Admittedly disappointed about the string of close calls, Reese said his consistency has propelled him to the top of the Angler of the Year standings. At the Potomac, Reese has gained 10 points because of the five-point bonus associated with his leads after Thursday and Friday. Kevin VanDam, Reese’s closest challenger and a three-time Angler of the Year winner himself, is in 33rd place.

“It’s not over until it’s over,” Reese said about the Angler of the Year award. “I need every point I can get. I’ve certainly pulled the rabbit out of my hat on a few occasions this year and salvaged some bad practices, so I feel great about my chances.”

Jordon, the defending champion, finished second with a two-day total of 32 pounds, 14 ounces. Like Reese, the majority of his bites came early in his day of fishing. He still has not established a solid pattern, instead opting to run a variety of patterns while rotating his productive areas.

Jordon might be the next angler to join Reese in the prestigious BASS millionaires club. The 36-year-old has more than $960,000 in BASS tournament earnings. A win would put him over the threshold.

“Today was as tough a day as I had on the Potomac,” Jordon said. “I really can’t picture it being much worse Saturday or Sunday. But it’s as simple as fishing efficiently, and I still think I can put together two solid days of fishing.”

Jumping from seventh into third was Britt Myers of Mount Holly, N.C., Myers boated 15 pounds, 0 ounces, Friday and was able to move up, while many of Thursday’s top competitors struggled. Rounding out the top five was Toyota Rookie of the Year leader Derek Remitz of Madison, Ala., with 31 pounds, 9 ounces, and three-time BASS winner Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla., with 31 pounds, 5 ounces.

In the co-angler division, Mike Acord of Pennsylvania posted a two-day total of 23 pounds, 0 ounces and leads the race for a Triton Boat package valued at $50,000. Trailing Acord were James Hill of Alabama with 20 pounds, 3 ounces, and Brian Wright of Virginia with 19 pounds, 5 ounces. The co-angler competition ends Saturday.

Only the top 50 qualifiers will fish Saturday. Making the cut were Florida’s Preston Clark in 23rd; four-time Bassmaster Classic champion Rick Clunn in 34th and Japanese angler Morizo Shimizu in 46th. After Saturday, the top 12 will move on the final round of competition Sunday.

Day 3: Reese Opens up Commanding Lead on Potomac

Skeet ReeseLA PLATA, Md. – With a lead of more than 8 pounds over Charlie Hartley of Grove City, Ohio, at the Capitol Clash presented by Advance Auto Parts on the Potomac River, Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., inched closer to avenging a number of frustrating second-place finishes in 2007 Bassmaster Elite Series competition and sewing up his “ultimate goal” – the prestigious 2007 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year.

On Saturday, Reese tripled the margin of his lead with 17 pounds, 14 ounces – the heaviest limit in the field. With many of the top competitors struggling, Reese built an early limit and nearly lapped the field while looking for his third BASS win.

Fishing fans can catch all of the action on The Bassmasters and see which angler wins the $100,000 top prize at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, on ESPN2.

“At the forefront of my focus is this tournament. I want to win this one bad,” said Reese, who now has amassed more than $1 million in career BASS earnings. “I would really like to put an end to the string of close calls that I have had.”

Reese was referring to several disappointing but productive finishes that started at this event last year with a 7-ounce margin of defeat to 2006 champion Kelly Jordon of Mineola, Texas. Then, Reese fell to Boyd Duckett by a 6-ounce margin at the 2007 Bassmaster Classic and finished second at Elite Series events this year on California’s Clear Lake and New York’s Lake Champlain.

By retaining the lead through the third day of the Capitol Clash, Reese gains another five-point bonus in the Angler of the Year race. Surprisingly, Reese’s closest AOY competitor, Kevin VanDam, a three-time Angler of the Year himself, finished Saturday in a disappointing 21st place. No matter his finish Sunday, Reese stands to gain significant points on VanDam heading into the final Elite event of the season on Florida’s Lake Tohopekaliga.

Fishing slowly and methodically, Reese has been flipping to protected areas. While he has been flanked by some spectator boats, his primary area has been left alone by other competitors. Reese feels that a limit of 10 pounds Sunday might be enough to clinch the tournament.

"Catching a limit Sunday is easier said than done,” Reese said. “But I’m in a fantastic position. I couldn’t have had a better day than today, and everything is clicking for me right now.”

Hartley made the jump from 18th to second place with a Saturday catch of 17 pounds, 5 ounces. Hartley, who has totaled 44 pounds, 8 ounces, over three days, made an early decision to visit an area new to him after the first two days of competition.

The decision paid off. Hartley built his limit to 17 pounds by 7 a.m. The Ohio pro plans to go back to the area, which he described as a “deep hole inside a grass bed.”

“I had the greatest morning,” said Hartley, who celebrated his 43rd birthday Wednesday. “That allowed me to practice the rest of the day and I think I can make a run at this thing Sunday.”

In third was Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla., with 43 pounds, 4 ounces. Less than a pound behind Biffle was Chris Lane of Winter Haven, Fla., in fourth with 42 pounds, 6 ounces. Tied for fifth with 41 pounds, 11 ounces, were Matt Reed of Madisonville, Texas, and Randy Howell of Springville, Ala.

In the co-angler division, which ended Saturday, Mike Acord of Pennsylvania totaled 32 pounds, 9 ounces, over three days, earning a Triton Boat package valued at $50,000. Finishing behind Acord were Joel Etheredge of Alabama with 25 pounds, 10 ounces, and Mark Heatwole of Virginia with 25 pounds, 8 ounces.

Only the top 12 qualifiers will fish Sunday, the final day of competition. Those who made the cut included 2007 Bassmaster Classic champion Boyd Duckett of Demopolis, Ala., in seventh with 40 pounds, 7 ounces, and defending Capitol Clash champion Jordon, in eighth with 40 pounds, 5 ounces.

As with every Elite-level tournament, www.ESPNOutdoors.com is providing live, streaming video of the daily weigh-ins. Additionally, visitors to the site can access analysis, photo galleries, blogs from Elite Series anglers and abundant coverage of events.

Day 4: Reese Goes Wire-to-Wire on Potomac River

Skeet ReeseLA PLATA, Md. – In dominating fashion, Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., went wire to wire at the Capitol Clash presented by Advance Auto Parts on the Potomac River, scoring his third BASS victory by a commanding margin of more than 8 pounds over Kelly Jordon of Mineola, Texas. With the victory, Reese, who totaled 66 pounds, 0 ounces over four days, now holds a sizable lead in the season-long Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Race, the award he covets most.

Using a strategy he ran in 2006, Reese regularly made long runs to an area of the Potomac called Nanjemoy Creek, which turned out to be the more productive area of the two he visited throughout the tournament. Reese ran two patterns, flipping to wood and grass using two Berkley baits. With the victory and the $100,000 top prize, Reese, 38, gained some measure of redemption over last year’s winner, Jordon, to whom Reese lost by a heartbreaking 7 ounces at the 2006 Potomac Elite event.

Fishing fans can catch Reese’s victory on The Bassmasters at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, on ESPN2.

“Never in a million years after the practice I had this week would I have expected to be holding this trophy,” said Reese, who has now amassed more than $1 million in career BASS earnings. “I am so relieved. Finally, after all those close calls, I am bringing a trophy home.”

Since the Potomac River Elite event last year, Reese has four second-place finishes, including a near miss at the 2007 Bassmaster Classic and two seconds at Elite events on California’s Clear Lake and New York’s Lake Champlain. Ironically, Reese has placed fourth, third, second and now first in BASS competition at the Potomac.

It was the first victory for Reese in Elite Series competition. With only one event remaining, the seven-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier opened up a more than 100-point advantage in the Angler of the Year race over Michigan’s Kevin VanDam, a three-time AOY winner.

Heading into the season, the AOY title was Reese’s ultimate goal. The final Elite event of the season is slated for Sept. 13-16 on Florida’s Lake Tohopekaliga.

“It has been a phenomenal year thus far,” Reese said. “I consider the AOY the crown jewel of bass fishing and to win would solidify what I have been working on for all these years.”

The 2006 Capitol Clash champion, Jordon, was happy with second place after moving up from eighth. He could not overcome Saturday’s disappointing haul of 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and missed the chance to earn his fifth BASS win. Jordon takes home $30,000 with the finish and inches closer, with $990,000 in career BASS earnings, to totaling $1 million.

The 36-year-old primarily flipped tubes to mats of grass throughout the tournament. Like Reese, he brought back a strategy he used in 2006.

“It’s always disappointing to finish second,” said Jordon, who caught the biggest limit, 17 pounds, 2 ounces, of the final day. “But I am thrilled that I was able to move up after a frustrating Saturday.”

More than 1 pound behind Jordon was Matt Reed of Madisonville, Texas, who moved from fifth to third with 56 pounds, 2 ounces. In fourth was Randy Howell of Springville, Ala., with 55 pounds, 5 ounces. Rounding out the top five was Chris Lane of Winter Haven, Fla., with 54 pounds, 12 ounces.
Charlie Hartley, who slipped from second, finished sixth with 53 pounds, 3 ounces. The 2007 Bassmaster Classic champion, Boyd Duckett of Demopolis, Ala., finished seventh with 51 pounds, 15 ounces.

The next stop for Bassmaster Elite Series anglers is the Bassmaster Legends presented by Ramada Worldwide, set for Aug. 23-26 on Arkansas’ Lake Dardanelle. The 11th and final Elite event of the 2007 season will be Sept. 13-16 on Florida’s Lake Tohopekaliga. At that event, the Angler of the Year, the Toyota Rookie of the Year, the Toyota Moving Forward Award and Bassmaster Classic qualifiers will be determined.
