Day 1: Bill
Smith Leads Elite Series Finale
Bill Smith of Somerset, Ky., was just looking to kill some
time Thursday morning. He ended up catching the biggest limit on the opening
day of the Bassmaster Elite Series’ Sunshine Showdown presented by Allstate
Boat Insurance on Lake Tohopekaliga. With 18 pounds, 6 ounces, Smith leads
by less than one pound over tournament favorite Terry Scroggins of San
Mateo, Fla., who had 17-13.
Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., leader of the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler
of the Year standings entering the final Elite Series event of the season,
was 16th with a limit weighing 9-11. Kalamazoo, Mich., pro Kevin VanDam, who
is second in the standings, was 18th at 9-0.
“I’m fishing the only thing I’ve got,” Reese said. “If I had an area to
catch 15, 18 pounds, I’d be there. My spot has 2-pounders and right now,
those 2-pounders look pretty good.”
Smith’s leading weight was anchored by a fish weighing 6-7. Scroggins, who
won a Bassmaster Southern Open on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes in March, was
trailed by Ben Matsubu of Hemphill, Texas, with 16-1, followed by Elite
rookie Glenn Delong of Bellville, Ohio, with 15-7 and Bernie Schultz of
Gainesville, Fla., with 14-5.
Only the top-50 anglers will move on to Saturday’s competition. The top 12
will move on the final round of action on Sunday and compete for the
$100,000 top prize.
Smith said he was headed to Lake Kissimmee, but he had about an hour’s wait
to go through the lock at the southern end of Lake Toho. So he decided to
fish a nearby spot until the lock opened.
“My second cast I caught the 6-pounder,” said Smith, 36. “My next cast I
caught my second biggest keeper. I caught 12 or 13 keepers pretty quick. I
quit fishing it hard about 8:30 and just stayed there to keep other people
out, but nobody even tried to pull in there.
“It’s a real obvious spot. I don’t know why nobody’s fished there.”
Smith hopes to have the spot to himself again Friday.
“From what I saw [Thursday], there are plenty of fish there,” said Smith,
who located the spot during practice Wednesday, hooking and shaking off two
good fish before moving on.
He said he caught his big bass on a topwater lure, but played it close to
the vest on the detail of his other bait.
“I’m throwing a bait not made anymore,” Smith said. “It’s worked for me in
Florida several times and I bought 300 of them. It’s something different.”
There’s no secret about what Scroggins is doing: One of the best flippers on
the Elite Series trail flipped a cooter brown-colored Yum Big Show Craw with
a 1.5-ounce tungsten weight in mats of vegetation at the south end of Lake
Kissimmee.
“The Chain of Lakes is as tough as I’ve seen it,” said Scroggins, who has
claimed two BASS victories on Toho. “There’s a bunch of fish under those
mats, but they’re not wanting to eat at all. I had seven bites. I swung on
two of them and caught the other five. I was fortunate I had the right
bites.”
Meanwhile, Bryan Hudgins of Orange Park, Fla., had his Thursday catch
disqualified for violation of Rule 3.ii. The applicable part of the rule
states, “During both the official practice and the tournament, a competitor
may not have the assistance or advice of anyone…. who has been on the
tournament waters during the off-limits period.”
Co-angler division leader Harry Potts of Alabama caught the biggest limit of
the tournament so far with five fish weighing 20-8. Frank Mealer of Alabama
was second at 13-11 in the co-angler standings, followed by Allen Burkhalter
of Georgia at 10-0. The co-anglers are vying for a first-place prize of a
Triton/Mercury boat package valued at $50,000.

Day 2: Kansas' Chapman Surges to Lead on Toho
Back to top
KISSIMMEE,
Fla. – Brent Chapman’s goal for the Sunshine Showdown presented by Allstate
Boat Insurance on Lake Tohopekaliga was to catch one keeper bass.
He now has his sights set on winning the tournament after posting a two-day
total of 10 fish weighing 29 pounds, 10 ounces to take the lead in the
season-ending Bassmaster Elite Series event. First-day leader Bill Smith of
Somerset, Ky., fell to second, only 8 ounces behind.
All the drama of the Sunshine Showdown can be viewed on The Bassmasters on
ESPN2 on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 9 a.m. ET.
The competition for the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year is going
down to the wire. Points leader Skeet Reese of California caught a limit
weighing 9-3 Friday for a total weight of 18-14 and 15th place. Michigan pro
Kevin VanDam, who is second in the point standings, caught 10-3 Friday to
move past Reese into 13th place at 19-3.
The goal now for both anglers is to make the top 12 cut for Sunday.
“I
don’t know what it’s going to take (to clinch the AOY title),” said Reese,
who caught a limit on a Carolina rig in the morning and then culled every
fish while throwing a Lucky Craft crankbait. “I’m not on big fish. I
probably caught 15 keepers today, but I went through 15 keepers to get 9
pounds. (Saturday) I’ll just go fish the same areas.”
VanDam received a $15,000 bonus for clinching the season-long Berkley
Heavyweight Award.
“I’m actually pretty happy,” said VanDam, a three-time Angler of the Year.
“It’s been a hard tournament and tomorrow’s going to be a struggle, too.
Skeet’s doing what he needs to do. All I can do is concentrate on trying to
win the tournament.”
Chapman, from Lake Quivira, Kan., who was in ninth place Thursday with a
limit weighing 10-14, brought five bass weighing 18-12 to the scale Friday
at Lakefront Park. Smith had a limit weighing 10-12 Friday for a total
weight of 29-2.
Terry Scroggins of San Mateo, Fla., slipped from second to third with 27-13,
while Elite rookie Glenn DeLong of Bellville, Ohio, stayed in fourth place
at 25-9. Pete Ponds of Madison, Miss., had the Berkley Heavyweight Bag of
the Day at 18-13 to jump from 50th into a tie for fifth with Canadian Jon
Bondy at 24-13. The top 50 pros fish Saturday and the top 12 fish Sunday in
pursuit of the $100,000 top prize.
“This tournament was all about me making the Bassmaster Classic,” said
Chapman, who said that if he caught at least one eligible bass, it would
give him enough points to qualify for the Super Bowl of bass fishing, which
is Feb. 22-24 on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell.
“I don’t think I caught a 2-pound bass all practice, but I’ve made up for it
the last few days.”
Chapman caught a limit of fish Thursday fishing a drop shot rig with a Zoom
finesse worm at the southern end of Lake Kissimmee. He also flipped mats on
Lake Kissimmee, had one good bite and missed the fish. Later in the day he
caught two fish using a frog on Lake Toho.
Friday, Chapman started off fishing on Toho and didn’t get any bites, so he
returned to Kissimmee.
“I had four good bites flipping and landed them all,” he said.
After catching a 3- and a 4-pounder, Chapman went to tell former Elite
Series pro Alton Jones, who was fishing nearby and needed a good tournament
to make the Classic, about the spot. On the way over, Chapman made a cast
with his drop shot rod and caught a 4.5-pounder.
“I was supposed to go to the beach Sunday if I didn’t make the cut,” Chapman
said. “As long as I’m going to be here, I may as well try to win it.”
Smith, who caught his fish Thursday at a spot in Toho while he was waiting
for the lock at the south end of the lake to open and never left, went back
to the area Friday, but didn’t have as much success.
“I had a couple of bites in the morning that just pulled off,” said Smith,
who had a limit by 8:30 a.m. “Then I made a stupid decision and went to
Kissimmee. I culled some fish, but only added a few ounces.
“When we came back to Toho, my co-angler caught a 3-pounder. Tomorrow I’m
going to stay there all day.”
Scroggins, who has won two BASS events on Toho, had a limit weighing 10
pounds Friday after catching 17-13 Thursday. He flipped a Yum Big Show Craw
in thick mats of vegetation all over Lake Kissimmee.
“Yesterday I had seven bites and caught five. Today I had 15 bites and put
only six fish in the boat,” Scroggins said. “I lost a 4-pounder and a
3-pounder. I’m fishing really heavy cover and if they don’t bite just right,
it’s hard to get them in the boat. You’ve actually got to grab them by the
mouth to land them.”
Harry Potts of Alabama did not weigh a fish Friday but he remained atop the
co-angler standings on the strength of his first-day catch of 20-8, the
biggest limit of the tournament thus far. Frank Mealer of Alabama held on to
second with 15-12. After not catching a legal bass Thursday, Mary Delgado of
Florida caught a limit weighing 14-7 Friday to vault into third.

Day 3: Chapman Holds On To Lead on Toho
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Brent Chapman fished two very different
patterns Saturday to hold on to the lead in the Bassmaster Elite Series
Sunshine Showdown presented by Allstate Boat Insurance on Lake Tohopekaliga.
The Kansas pro caught a five-fish limit that weighed 12 pounds, 9 ounces,
for a three-day total weight of 42-3 and a 1-pound lead over Ben Matsubu of
Hemphill, Texas, in the season-ending Bassmaster Elite Series event.
All the drama of the Sunshine Showdown can be viewed on The Bassmasters on
ESPN2 on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 9 a.m. ET.
Chapman, of Lake Quivira, Kan., is seeking his third BASS victory Sunday and
the $100,000 prize that goes to the winner. Matsubu caught 17-8 Saturday to
move from seventh to second at 41-3. Glenn DeLong of Bellville, Ohio, moved
up a spot to third at 37-12, followed by first-day leader Bill Smith of
Somerset, Ky., at 35-12, Bradley Hallman of Norman, Okla., at 35-10 and
Scott Rook of Little Rock, Ark., at 34-11, who had the Berkley Heavyweight
Bag of the Day at 19-6 to jump from 38th to sixth. The top 12 anglers fish
Sunday.
An emotional Skeet Reese claimed the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the
Year title and $125,000 by edging Kevin VanDam of Michigan, a three-time
angler of the year. Reese, of Auburn, Calif., basically needed a top-30
finish to clinch the crown. He caught a limit weighing 10-5, and his total
weight of 29-3 was good for 14th place. VanDam, who went into the day in
13th place, two spots ahead of Reese, had 7-2 to finish 19th at 26-5.
“This trophy means my career to me,” a tearful Reese said after weighing in
before an appreciative crowd at Lakefront Park.
“For me, it validates my career as a professional bass fisherman. To come
out on top after this many days of fishing out here, it’s priceless. At
least one time in my career, I was No. 1.”
Chapman caught all his fish Saturday in four small but key areas at the
south end of Lake Kissimmee.
“I’m doing the extremes,” Chapman said. “I’m fishing a drop shot with a
6-inch Zoom finesse worm to catch the real lethargic fish that aren’t real
aggressive and I caught my biggest fish flipping a Zoom Super Hog with an
ounce-and-a-quarter tungsten weight.
“I got probably eight or nine bites. I missed a couple, but everything I
hooked I put in the boat.”
Matsubu changed tactics Saturday to catch his limit, which was anchored by a
fish weighing 7-4. He credited Mary Delgado, his co-angler Friday, who
caught a limit weighing 14-7 by Carolina-rigging a trick worm. Matsubu
caught only 7-10 Friday.
“Mainly I’ve been throwing a crankbait,” Matsubu said. “I tied on a Carolina
rig (Saturday) and started catching them. All but one of my fish came on the
Carolina rig.”
He said he caught his fish in 7 feet of water around scattered grass in Lake
Kissimmee. His rig consisted of an 18-inch leader with a quarter-ounce
sinker.
“It’s all timing. First thing in the morning and the last two hours,”
Matsubu said. “We left fish biting.”
Matsubu’s co-angler Saturday was Alabama’s Harry Potts, who caught a limit
weighing 14-11 to go wire-to-wire and win the co-angler division with 10
fish weighing 35-3. Frank Mealer of Alabama was second at 17-14. Don Moore
of California was third at 16-10. Potts won a fully-rigged Triton/Mercury
boat package valued at $50,000.
Reese said his goal coming into the tournament was to win the angler of the
year title, but “then I put it into perspective and said, ‘I can’t fish
chicken.’ I wanted to go out and try to win this thing.”
Each morning Reese caught fish on a Carolina rig by a shallow point in Lake
Kissimmee that fellow pro Kevin Wirth had told him about. Then he moved to
the Kissimmee River, where he caught his fish burning a LuckyCraft SKT Trap.
Going into Saturday, Reese said his plan was to catch 4 or 5 pounds of bass,
which he felt would be enough to win the title.
“That was the benchmark I set for myself,” he said, “so when I got my fourth
fish, I knew I had achieved that.”

Day 4: Big Final Day Vaults Texan Ben Matsubu to
Victory
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Ben Matsubu knew he was on a good fishing
spot, but he also knew he had to wait for the bass to turn on and start
feeding. His patience paid off Sunday with a five-fish limit weighing 25
pounds, 5 ounces, and a 14-pound victory in the Bassmaster Elite Series
Sunshine Showdown presented by Allstate Boat Insurance on Lake Tohopekaliga.
All the drama of the Sunshine Showdown can be viewed on The Bassmasters on
ESPN2 on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 9 a.m. ET.
Matsubu’s Berkley Heavyweight Bag of the Day – the biggest of the tournament
– was anchored by the tournament’s biggest bass of 8-13. The Hemphill,
Texas, pro finished with a four-day total weight of 66-8 to win the
season-ending Bassmaster Elite Series event. Matsubu’s second career victory
and first Elite Series win was worth a total of $111,000.
Bill Smith of Somerset, Ky., was second at 52-7. Brent Chapman of Lake
Quivira, Kan., who had a 1-pound lead over Matsubu going into the final day,
was third at 52-5, followed by Glenn Delong of Bellville, Ohio, at 50-9 and
Scott Rook of Little Rock, Ark., at 41-9.
“I’ve struggled the last four years here in Florida. I can’t figure out the
fish here in spring,” said Matsubu, 45. “But I’ve won the last two
tournaments here in the fall.”
Matsubu’s first BASS tournament title was the Bassmaster Elite Series
Wild-Card Qualifier last November on Florida’s Harris Chain of Lakes.
Matsubu said he fished in the dead center of Lake Toho, where he had eight
clumps of grass. He’d move from clump to clump until he found a
concentration of fish. The first day Matsubu fished the area for about an
hour because he already had a nice limit fishing a different spot with an RC
1.5 square bill crankbait.
“I gave the spot to Takahiro (Omori) so he could make the (Bassmaster)
Classic,” Matsubu said.
Matsubu ended the first day in third place at 16-1. He went to the area
Friday, threw his crankbait all day and caught five fish weighing only 7-10
to drop to seventh place, nearly six pounds behind Chapman.
His co-angler that day, Mary Delgado, caught 14-7 on the same crankbait,
then sat down and fished a Carolina rig while Matsubu continued to crank.
That turned out to be one of the keys to Matsubu’s victory.
“She’d drag that Carolina rig behind us and catch keepers,” Matsubu said.
“The next day I threw that crankbait for an hour and a half and didn’t catch
anything. Then I switched to a Carolina rig.”
Fishing a junebug-colored finesse worm, Matsubu caught a limit weighing 17-8
Saturday to move into second behind Chapman.
“My goal was to get within three pounds of Brent,” Matsubu said. “When I
came from six pounds behind to one pound, I felt I had a chance at it.”
Matsubu followed the same strategy Sunday, throwing his crankbait for 90
minutes, but he didn’t get a bite. Then he switched to the Carolina rig and
started hitting each of his clumps.
“I had to go to all of them today,” Matsubu said. “I’d catch three or four
fish, then wait two hours for them to bite again.
“At one spot I caught a 5-pounder, then got another 5 and a half. Two
minutes later I caught a 1-pounder, then a 2 and a half. That was the end,
so I went to the last clump in the area and that’s when I got the 9.”
Smith, who led the first day, then slipped to second and then fourth, caught
a limit weighing 16-11 Sunday to finish second. He caught his fish at a spot
that he’d fished the first day when he was waiting for the lock at the south
end of Lake Toho to open.
He caught some of his fish on a bait that is no longer made, a blue
pearl-colored Bass Assassin soft-plastic jerkbait that he Texas-rigged with
an eighth- or three-sixteenths-ounce sinker. He also caught fish on a
junebug trick worm Texas-rigged with an eighth-ounce weight. Sunday he
fished the trick worm on a Carolina rig.
“I was fishing a hydrilla bed with lily pads on the outside and outside the
pads was a shell bed,” said Smith, 36, who caught two 5-pounders. “I caught
some fish inside, then moved out to the shell bed and that’s where I got the
two big ones.”
Chapman had caught his bigger fish flipping a Zoom Super Hog and filled out
his limit drop-shotting a 6-inch Zoom finesse worm at the south end of Lake
Kissimmee. Sunday, only the drop shot was working.
“The thing that hurt me was I didn’t get any of my flipping bites,” said
Chapman, 35, who caught five fish weighing 10-2 on the drop shot.
