Tour Event # 1 of 5

Day 1: Hometown Advantage Gives Bullard Edge in
WBT
DEL RIO, Texas — The first day of the first event of the 2007
Mercury Marine Women’s Bassmaster Tour Presented by Triton Boats was also
something of a first for Karla Bullard of Del Rio, Texas.
“This is the first time I’ve ever led a WBT tournament,” said Bullard, whose
five-fish limit of 19 pounds, 13 ounces, put her in front on Thursday in the
Lake Amistad competition.
A regular competitor on Amistad as part of the Val Verde BASS Federation
Nation club, Bullard took advantage of her experience on the spacious
reservoir and put herself in prime position for the top prize of a
Triton/Mercury rig valued at $50,000. Bullard holds a two-pound plus lead
over Kentucky’s Secret York.
The start of Thursday’s competition was delayed for more than one hour by
heavy fog. Soon after BASS tournament officials cleared the pros and their
co-anglers for take-off, a misty wind kicked up, which some contenders said
hampered their search for the big bass of Lake Amistad.
Bullard, a 56-year-old dental hygienist, said she used Thursday’s windy
conditions to her advantage.
“The wind is your friend on this lake,” she said. “If the lake is glassed
over, the water is so clear and the number of bites is going to go way
down.”
In second was York of Benton, Ky., who wrapped up Thursday with 17-10. In
third was Lisa Sternard of Clarksville, Tenn., with 16-14. In fourth was
Lisa Johnson of Aragon, Ga., with 15-11 and in fifth was Laura Moore of
Brookeland, Texas, with 15-5.
The vast Rio Grande impoundment that straddles the Mexico-U.S. border
reportedly gave up many big bass to competitors during practice earlier in
the week.
The promise of lunkers in the livewell panned out for many of the women on
Thursday; and the largest, a 7-11, was brought to the scales by Sternard,
who earned Thursday’s Purolator Big Bass premium of $1,000.
Leading the field of co-anglers was Kim Tucker of Red Bay, Ala. Fishing her
first tournament, she weighed-in 22 pounds, 2 ounces of bass. Tucker was
ahead of Julie Shivers of Del Rio, Texas, who had 15-8. Trailing them were
Alabama’s Crystal Langston with 15-0; Indiana’s Kimberly Martin with 13-11;
and Massachusetts’ Colleen McKay with 11-15.
Co-anglers are competing for a top prize of $1,000 cash and a fully rigged
Triton boat worth $25,000.
On Friday, the WBT anglers compete to make the cut of the top 25 pros and
top 25 co-anglers for the final day of competition Saturday.
The Lake Amistad event kicks off the second season of the WBT. The success
of the regular 2006 season will be crowned later this month when the
inaugural WBT Championship takes place on Lake Mitchell in Alabama held in
conjunction with the Bassmaster Classic.
Many WBT Championship contenders are in the field at Amistad including
two-time WBT winners Tammy Richardson and Dianna Clark.
“I was concerned how I would focus on this tournament, knowing Lake Mitchell
was coming up,” said Clark, the 2006 Toyota Women’s Bassmaster Tour Angler
of the Year and currently sitting in eighth place. “But I began to feel
comfortable once I got here.”

Day 2: Karla Bullard Stays Ahead at Amistad
Back to top
DEL RIO, Texas — For the second day in a row, Karla Bullard
of Del Rio utilized her local knowledge of spacious Lake Amistad to hold the
top position in the season opener of the 2007 Mercury Marine Women’s
Bassmaster Tour presented by Triton Boats.
Her two-day total of 38 pounds, 10 ounces, gave Bullard a cushion of more
than three pounds over Lucy Mize of Ben Lomond, Ark., who shot from 21st
place on Thursday to second on Friday, thanks to a catch of 24 pounds, 13
ounces.
Mize said she found her pattern Friday, skipping the shallow water she got
caught up in on Thursday. Bullard said that on both days she targeted fish
with worms but played it close to the vest on the specifics.
The 56-year-old said she felt she could pull off the win, especially if the
predicted winds of 30 mph Saturday happen.
“Let it blow,” said the dental hygienist who holds the Val Verde (Texas)
Federation Nation club’s angler-of-the-year title, and is fishing her first
WBT season. “Fishing in the wind is not fun, but we’re used to it here and
my fishing won’t be affected.”
“I feel great, I’m confident. I’ve saved half of my fish for tomorrow,” she
added.
Saturday’s field will be cut to the top 25 and it includes Lisa Sternard of
Clarksville, Tenn., in third with 34-0, less than two pounds behind Mize.
Sternard’s Friday catch included a 10-pound, 1-ounce lunker, easily earning
her the Purolator Big Bass premium of $1,000. Sternard holds the distinction
of landing the first bass in WBT history weighing more than 10 pounds.
On the heels of the top three were previous WBT winners Pam Martin-Wells of
Bainbridge, Ga., with 32-8 and Dianna Clark of Bumpus Mills, Tenn., with
31-4. All in the top five brought five-fish limits to the scales, as did 27
other pros.
The co-angler leaderboard mirrored the situation on the pro side when Day 1
leader Kim Tucker of Red Bay, Ala., built on her first-day weight of 22
pounds, 2 ounces for a two-day total of 34-14. In position for a
wire-to-wire win, Tucker was less than two pounds ahead of Crystal Langston
of Leighton, Ala., with 33-3.
With the field cut to the top 25 pros and 25 co-anglers, the Lake Amistad
WBT event concludes Saturday. The top prize in the pro division is a
Triton/Mercury boat package valued at $50,000 while co-anglers are competing
for a similar package valued at $25,000 and $1,000 cash. Launch is scheduled
for 7:15 a.m. at Diablo East. The weigh-in is scheduled to begin at 3:30
p.m. also at Diablo.

Day 3: Robinson Climbs Into Amistad Winner's Seat
Back to top
DEL RIO, Texas — When Juanita Robinson clinched the 2007
season-opener Saturday on Lake Amistad with 56 pounds, 8 ounces, she broke
two records, but she was only one of the anglers who rewrote the record
books of the Mercury Marine Women’s Bassmaster Tour presented by Triton
Boats.
Robinson’s 56-8 shattered the 33-3 winning-weight record set by two-time WBT
champion Tammy Richardson of Amity, Ark., on Lake Neely Henry in April 2006.
“With the fish I was on all week, I knew I had a good chance of winning,”
said Robinson, who jumped from 11th on Thursday to 8th on Friday before
clinching the winner’s spot. It was her first WBT victory.
The 57-year-old pro from Highlands, Texas, took home a Triton/Mercury rig
valued at $50,000. Robinson will next compete in the Women’s Bassmaster Tour
Championship on Alabama’s Lake Mitchell on Feb. 22-24.
Robinson’s final-day limit that weighed 26-0 set another mark, making her
the unofficial WBT “heavyweight champ” besting Lucy Mize’s 24-13 catch on
Friday.
“The wind helped me today and on the first day,” she said, “But no wind
yesterday hurt me. And I really didn’t think I had that much weight today.”
Scoring second place was Pam Martin-Wells of Bainbridge, Ga., with 53-5. She
shot from 20th on the Thursday to fourth on Friday, and missed the top spot
by 3 pounds, 3 ounces. Martin-Wells holds the title of the first WBT event
ever held, a “preview” tournament, on Lake Lewisville in Texas in 2005.
Third was Sheri Glasgow of Muskogee, Okla., with 52-11 and fourth was Mize
of Ben Lomond, Ark with 51-11. Karla Bullard of Del Rio, Texas, who led the
first two days, slipped to fifth with a total of 48-9.
Co-angler winner Julie Shivers of Del Rio did more than her part to rewrite
the WBT record book. In the first tournament of her life, she brought in a
winning weight of 42-6, demolishing the 18-0 co-angler record set by Bonnie
Ward of Snohomish, Wash., at Lake Neely Henry in 2006.
“I used a ‘secret weapon,’ ” said Shivers, a 48-year-old who regularly
fishes Lake Amistad with her husband. “I had beginner’s luck, but I give all
the credit to my pro partners. They helped me find my fish.” Shivers
received $1,000 cash and a Triton/Mercury rig valued at $25,000.
The second-place co-angler was Kim Tucker of Red Bay, Ala., who totaled
38-9. She led the first two days on the strength of 22 pounds, 2 ounces on
Friday, but finished more than three pounds behind Shivers.
Co-anglers finishing at the top were Crystal Langston of Leighton, Ala.,
third with 36-12; Cheryl Holloway of Pollack, La., fourth with 32-13; and
Lesa Brown of Harrison, Ark., fifth with 29-14.
Anglers in both pro and co-angler divisions contributed to new WBT records
for number of five-fish limits and tournament weight.
With Saturday’s win, pro Robinson and co-angler Shivers top their respective
WBT division’s points standings. The pro with the most points at season’s
end will become the Toyota Women’s Bassmaster Tour Angler of the Year, a
title currently held by Dianna Clark. Pros and co-anglers finishing in the
top 12 earn a berths in the WBT Championship.
The second stop of the 2007 regular season will be Lake Dardanelle in
Russellville, Ark., March 29-31.
