Preview: Lake Hartwell Turns Tough for Classic
Back to top
For
the 50 contenders, the 2008 Bassmaster Classic on South Carolina’s Lake
Hartwell already has begun.
The anglers hit the water Tuesday through Thursday for three official
practice days. It was their first look at the water since the off-limits
period began Dec. 15, and their last chance to whip their game plans into
shape before the start of the Feb. 22-24 Classic.
The full field will compete Feb. 22 and 23. The top 25 will face off on the
final day for the $500,000 first-place prize and coveted title of 38th
Bassmaster Classic champion. Daily weigh-ins will be at the Bi-Lo Center in
Greenville, S.C. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. ET, and admission is free.
Practice days are for scouting, and what most contenders discovered were
cooler-than-expected water temperatures and gusting wind that made boat
positioning a challenge. A cold front moved in Tuesday – the low Wednesday
morning was 29 – keeping bass in deep water. That leaves a big question mark
for contenders who planned to tap into productive shallow-water techniques
next week.
“I had a shallow pattern developed and I had some deep fish,” said defending
Classic champion and Bassmaster Elite Series pro Boyd Duckett of Demopolis,
Ala. “There’s no indication of fish moving up, but with this weather front,
it’s really difficult to say what will happen during competition.
“I’m pleased that the fish I found in early December are still there. I’m
not getting as many bites as I’d like — I don’t know if it’s the effect of
the cold front or what — but some are quality fish.”
Elite pro Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., the reigning Toyota Tundra
Bassmaster Angler of the Year, said his practice days were his first close
look at Hartwell.
“I spent two hours here back in September. I didn’t even fish, I just drove
around the lake real quick,” he said. “The lake’s lower, so it looks a lot
different. I don’t think the fishing’s good, by any means. You have to work
awfully hard to get a bite. I’m still hunting, trying to find that glory
spot.”
Reese said his best guess is that next week’s conditions won’t vary from
what he saw during practice.
“We have another cold front coming in that’s not going to help the bite at
all, especially for the shallow fish,” he said. “The cold front is just
going to push the fish back some more, so I feel the tournament’s going to
be won on a deep, wintertime pattern.”
Also on the water Wednesday, Elite pro Casey Ashley of Donalds, S.C., was
contending with 25 mph wind gusts when he answered his cell phone.
“The fishing is a little tougher,” he said, having to repeat himself over
the noisy wind. “It’s probably because of the cold fronts coming through.
“Some of my fish are still where they were when I scouted the lake, and some
are on the move. Maybe next week we’ll catch some deep and some shallow.
It’s just hard to tell right now, but I think conditions will change
big-time for everybody.”
Ashley is one of two Classic contenders from South Carolina. The other
home-state contender is Lake Wylie’s Todd Auten, also an Elite pro.
Day 1: Hartley Leads Classic by Slim Margin
Back to top
GREENVILLE,
S.C. — Holding off three other contenders by less than a pound, Charlie
Hartley claimed the lead Friday in the 2008 Bassmaster Classic on Lake
Hartwell with 21 pounds, 1 ounce.
“I feel like a million bucks,” the 43-year-old Bassmaster Elite Series pro
from Grove City, Ohio, said as he tried on the idea of leading a field of
the world’s top 50 anglers.
He has reason to feel like a million: He’s contending for the Classic’s top
prize of $500,000. A win is reputed to bring as much in future earnings.
Fishing fans can watch the drama of Hartley’s first-day lead by tuning in
Saturday, Feb. 23, at 8:30 a.m. ET on ESPN2. For Saturday’s competition,
fans can click in for complete coverage at www.Bassmaster.com, where the
Hooked Up Webcast will feature breaking news from Lake Hartwell along with
BASSCast Powered by ESPN, a new technology that provides coverage of
on-the-water action via boat-mounted cameras.
Hartley, who qualified for his first Classic by winning the points race on
the 2007 Bassmaster Southern Open circuit, held off two pros with several
years of Classic experience: Elite pro Scott Rook of Little Rock, Ark., who
had 20-13, and two-time Classic champion and Elite pro Kevin VanDam of
Kalamazoo, Mich., who had 20-3.
Elite pro Terry Scroggins of Palatka, Fla., was fourth with 19-3. In fifth
with 18-10 was an Elite pro from Donalds, S.C., Casey Ashley — clearly a
favorite with the crowd cheering him on at the weigh-in at Greenville’s
Bi-Lo Center.
Confidence to follow his “gut feelings” put Hartley on his game Friday.
“I caught a limit early, and I want to win the Classic, so I had to leave
those fish and go look for the big boys,” he said. “It worked out, but that
took a lot of nerve. I usually stay on my little fish if I’m getting the
bite. I need to trust my gut more often.”
Hartley said he worked two different arms of Lake Hartwell for his five-fish
limit.
“I’m fishing 8 to 20 feet of water with a jig, real slow,” he added. “I
thought sun would really be important to me, but I stayed with my pattern
anyway. Maybe sun isn’t as important as I thought it would be.”
Sunshine and warming temperatures — predictions are for high the 60s, almost
30 degrees warmer than Friday’s weather — are expected to change the game
Saturday for the field, which will cut to the top 25 for the finale Sunday.
Rook, VanDam and Scroggins agreed that the change in weather could force
everyone to switch patterns.
“I thought my fishing was better when it was a little bit sunny,” Rook said.
“Bass tend to roam around a lot when it’s cloudy, so that could account for
a lot of the big fish today, but it’s all relative, we’re all dealing with
the same situation.”
Said VanDam, “I know I’m going to have to change with conditions tomorrow. I
saw that last week in practice.”
Launches Saturday and Sunday will be at 7:15 a.m. from Lake Hartwell’s
Portman Marina. The launches are free and open to the public. On Saturday
and Sunday, Classic weigh-ins will begin at 4:30 p.m. ET. Live, streaming
video and real-time leaderboards will be provided both days at

Day 2: Texan Alton Jones Surges to Lead Day 2 of
Classic
GREENVILLE,
S.C. — A sweet, deep spot helped Alton Jones to a second-day catch of more
than 18 pounds and the Saturday lead at the 2008 Bassmaster Classic.
The Waco, Texas, Bassmaster Elite Series pro amassed 36 pounds of Lake
Hartwell bass after two days to edge first-day leader Charlie Hartley, an
Elite pro from Grove City, Ohio, who had 34-13 — less than what he could
have had if he hadn’t lost a bass he estimated to be in the 4- to 5-pound
class.
Jones leads the top 25 who made the cut for Sunday’s finale and a chance at
the Classic’s $500,000 first-place prize. The full field Friday and Saturday
included 50 anglers.
Fishing fans can catch all the Classic action on ESPN2. Coverage of
Saturday’s competition airs Saturday, Feb. 23, at 10 p.m. ET and again
Sunday, Feb. 24, at 6 a.m. Sunday’s finale, at which the 38th Classic
champion will be crowned, airs Sunday, Feb. 24, at 10 p.m.
Elite pro Cliff Pace of Petal, Miss., had 33-5 for third place, moving him
up from fifth despite his having to switch patterns mid-Classic, thanks to
an exiting cold front.
“I’ve said all along this isn’t going to be a one-rod show,” Pace said.
“Yesterday I caught them real shallow, fishing reaction baits. With today’s
high, bright skies, I had to back off and fish a lot slower and dropshot
with plastics.”
In fourth place was two-time Classic champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo,
Mich., with 32-1. He said the bright sun forced him into another pattern
Saturday, but declined to give specifics.
“Something changed everything out there today. It was tough,” said VanDam,
who is fishing his 18th Classic. “The weather was the biggest factor — the
sun coming out and warming up should have been positive. I’m still
scratching my head.”
Jeff Kriet of Ardmore, Okla., pulled off one of the most dramatic
improvements of the day, catapulting from 23rd place into fifth, thanks to a
Day 2 catch of 18-12.
This is Jones’ 11th Classic. His best finish is seventh, in 2000 and 2003,
but Saturday he was in position to go for the big win.
“I could get nervous, excited — all those things —-really easily,” Jones
said. "I’m just trying to think about the next fish, I’m going to try to
approach them one at a time tomorrow, take what comes.”
He said the majority of his fish took a spoon in water ranging from 15 to 40
feet. One spot, which he described as a “clay ditch, real tight and real
narrow,” gave him the fish he needed to take the lead.
“I haven’t found anything else like it on the lake,” he added. “I’m fishing
it slowly, methodically, grinding them out one at a time.”
Elite pro Skeet Reese, the reigning Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the
Year, worked his way above the cutline with a Day 2 catch of 17-2, pushing
him from 30th place to 13th. Defending champion Boyd Duckett of Demopolis,
Ala., finished his second Classic in 33rd place, out of the cut.
The 25 Classic finalists will launch Sunday at 7:15 a.m. from Lake
Hartwell’s Portman Marina. The doors to the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville will
open at 3:30 p.m. for the 4:30 p.m. weigh-in. Admission to the launch and
weigh-in is free and open to the public.
The Webcast Hooked Up at www.Bassmaster.com has provided updates from
several Classic venues throughout the week. Sunday’s coverage will begin at
6:30 a.m. ET, building up to Sunday’s weigh-in coverage beginning at 4 p.m.
At Greenville’s Carolina First Center, the Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo
will be open Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Day 3: Alton Jones of Texas Captures Bassmaster
Classic Win
GREENVILLE,
S.C. — Alton Jones jockeyed a slim lead into a jumbo win with 49 pounds, 7
ounces Sunday for his first Bassmaster Classic crown and the top prize of
$500,000.
The Bassmaster Elite Series pro from Waco, Texas, went into the final day of
the Lake Hartwell competition with only a 1-pound, 3-ounce cushion against
his closest challenger. He held on handily for the crown, his first win
since he took a 2004 Bassmaster Elite 50 event on the Tennessee River.
Competing in his 11th Classic, Jones moved from 10th place on Day 1 to take
the lead on the second day, and he never let go.
The 44-year-old Jones claimed his trophy in front of a packed house of
fishing fans Sunday at the Bi-Lo Center. A recap of his victory and the
entire tournament will air on ESPN2 on Saturday, March 1 at 9 a.m. ET.
Extensive coverage is also available at www.Bassmaster.com.
The 38th Classic champion said he stuck to one productive pattern throughout
the competition, which started with 50 contenders and cut to the top 25 for
Sunday.
“I really didn’t have a Plan B. I tried all different types of things in
practice and I really only had one type of location I was fishing and a few
baits that were working.
“The problem was that one of them, the Cotton Cordell CC Spoon, only worked
for 30 minutes early. Once that bite was gone, I went to a prototype Booyah
jig called the Pigskin and another one called AJ’s Go-To Jig.”
Jones said he fished “all over the lake,” keying in on inside edges of deep
timber. He said his side-imaging electronics unit was key to seeing abrupt
drops and deep ditches that produced for him.
Second was Elite Series pro Cliff Pace of Petal, Miss., who rode his
fifth-place standing Friday into third place Saturday, but come Sunday, his
44-5 total was still 5-2 short of catching Jones.
Pace said he used two patterns. One was working 5-foot water with a Buckeye
spinner tipped with a V&M soft plastic. The other was drop-shotting water as
deep as 46 feet.
The key for Pace was bass chasing bait fish, either blueback herring or
shad.
“If the bait wasn’t there, the fish weren’t there, and you would not get a
bite,” Pace said.
Third was two-time Classic champ and Elite pro Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo,
Mich., who with 43-8 missed his third title by almost 6 pounds.
“The first day was good for me, but the second day, that weather front threw
my pattern off and I had a hard time readjusting. I took a big chance
knowing I had 4 pounds to make up … and as tough as it was today, I should
have gone with my pattern that was a sure thing, one I knew I could get bit
on, and have a chance to catch big ones.”
VanDam said he caught all his fish on two baits, a Strike King Series 5
crankbait, a blue gizzard shad color he designed to look like a blueback
herring, cranking it on main-lake structure on long clay points in clear
water near the dam. The second day that pattern failed him, so he went to
another Strike King lure, a flat shad bait in his signature “sexy-shad”
color.
