AGFC Millwood Lake Fishing & Conditions Report, submitted

}><(((º> Millwood Lake Fishing Report 23 June 2008 <º)))><{
The Overall Picture:
Navigation conditions in Little River are near normal.
As of Monday 23 June, Largemouth Bass are good early and late. Increased
current in Little River from last week. Millwood is 5.52" above normal, as
of
Monday. Water surface temps consistent w/ last week. Buzz Baits, jigs,
10-12" worms, Bass Assassin Shads, & Top Water Toads all continue working
well
for Bass.
14-20" Largemouth Bass from 2, up to 8 pounds, are good and best bite is
early and late. Typical routine summer patterns. The mayfly hatch is active
and in full swing. The water clarity along the main lake and also in Little
River worsened this week. Main lake clarity diminished w/ high winds. Some
high density broken, vegetation and floating mats remain in Little River,
due
to recent pool fluctuations and discharge over past many weeks, and is still
present. USACE are working diligently to replace damaged and/or missing
river buoys in Little River.
As of Monday, 23 June, the main lake and Little River's water surface temp
range approx 78º to 87ºF, depending of course, on location and time of day.
Lake level on Millwood as of Monday 23 June, is approx 5.52 inches above
normal, and falling, at 259.66 feet. Normal pool is 259.2 feet. Little
River's
clarity as of Monday, is approx 5-6" visibility. Main lake clarity and
visibility 2-5" away from current. Current in Little River and discharge at
the
dam is 7,573 CFS as of Monday. Many river buoys have already been replaced.
All USACE boat ramps and campgrounds are now open, as of Monday 23 June 08.
Upriver oxbow's clarity has diminished over the past week, and is ranging
approx 10-20". The tailwater elevation was 235.86 on Monday, 23 June.
Discharge/ Release Rate at the spillway of 7,573 CFS is with 6 tainer gates
open at
at 2 feet each, and 7 tainer gates open at 1 foot each. Use caution in
navigation on Little River during low light conditions due to debris and
broken
vegetation still present and floating downstream in the increased current.
The Details:
Largemouth Bass: Bass are very good, and definitely the best during early
and late hours, over the past few weeks and have been caught and released,
up
to 5-6 pounds each, in 2-12 foot depth areas. The mayfly hatch is in full
swing, and numbers of bass are chasing and feeding on bream feeding under
willow and cypress trees which are feeding on the mayfly population. Chunky
Bass
from 4-7 pounds remain consistent over the past week, but are tough to find
and entice a bite after 11am until dark. Most consistent bite is on buzz
baits, spinnerbaits, Bass Assassin Shads, Top Water Toads, and 10 or 12"
worms.
Jigs in peanut butter and jelly, or Texas Craw colors are best producers
over the past week. Bass Assassin Shads in rainbow trout, white, and Gizzard
shad are best colors over the past week. Trick Worms and Salty Rat Tails in
watermelon-red flake, Topwater Toads, and big, bulky 10-12" worms in camo,
grasshopper, plum, and blue fleck, continue working well. Not much change in
overall Largemouth bite patterns, over the past couple weeks, full blown
summer
routines. Early and late, find shallow flats with cypress, stumps and grass
or pads, next to deep water drops and creek channel swings, and you are in
the correct zone. Hog Assassins in black emerald, and green pumpkin remain
working well.
Siefert's Buzz Baits, in Hot Firecracker, Black Diamond, or Cole Slaw
colors, near mixtures of lily pads and hydrilla in the 2-5 foot depths of
clearest
water you can find near cypress trees and knees, are drawing good reactions
and catching fish from 14-19" in length.
War Eagle spinnerbaits, in Spot Remover, Aurora, and Hot Mouse colors, are
taking some decent 15" to 19" size Largemouths around flooded vegetation and
cypress trees, away from current of the river, close to deep water.
Rat-L-Traps in Sexy Shad, Bleeding White Striper, and Spring Bream colors
seem to
remain the hot lipless crank bait bites again over the past week.
White Bass: White Bass are fair, trolling RatLTraps or Norman Deep Little
N's, between Jack's Isle and Mud Lake, along Little River. Little River
between Pugh Slough and Horseshoe at 10-15' depths are best bet.
Crappie: Crappie bite, slightly improved this past week in some of the
oxbows, with better water color than in Little River, and worse on the river
and
main lake since it muddied up w/ the high winds from Yarborough Point to Big
Bayou Boat Run, and increased current. The most consistent bite remains on
live shiners, chartreuse/white tube jigs and smoke grubs on light wire jig
heads, over the past week.
Channel Cats: Blues and Channel Cats continue to hit well on trotlines, and
remains best w/ consistent current in Little River over the past week.
Channel Cats, from 2-6 pounds each, are very good to excellent, using cut
shad
or Charlie, on trot lines and yo-yo's along the river and in oxbows hung
from
cypress trees in approx 8-10 feet water depth, near any current.
Bream: Continue to bite well again along the banks on crickets and red
worms around docks and cypress trees. With the mayfly hatch in full swing,
numbers of mason bream and redears can be caught under a single cypress or
willow
tree on ultra light or spin cast tackle on smoke colored tubes, jigs and
also
on white and chartruese colored popping bugs.

Wear your Life Jacket!! If you are suddenly or unexpectedly thrown from
your boat, it could be your only chance of survival. Use caution navigating
Little River in low light conditions, SLOW DOWN, and pass friendly to other
boaters! As always, careful watch for any random floaters and debris in
Little
River's current, and wearing your PFD and kill switch is a requirement!!
Don't forget, be courteous, and respect the other guy's right to use the
lake too. Release those big bass to spawn and fight again, and take home
those
little 16"ers to fry up! Use caution in low light conditions, and wear your
flotation device! If you are suddenly thrown from your boat, or knocked
unconscious, your life preserver can potentially be your only hope to
survive.
