West Point Lake Fishing
Report
WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 9.4 FEET, CLEAR & 51 DEGREES BY
CHRIS BRACKETT, WEST GEORGIA MARINE AND TACKLE 706-845-1004
Bass fishing is good and the spots are hot. This week drop shot rigs,
Carolina rigs and Shakey heads are great. Fish in 8 to 12 feet deep with
finesse worms in green pumpkin, June bug, and Watermelon seed were the top
colors used on all these rigs. Up lake and mid lake are the better area.
Start at Whitewater Creek, Wehadkee Creek and no name pockets just below the
railroad. The best places to target include the most important thing this
time of year and that is finding the shad. Shad play such a major role in
winter you have to follow the bait or you won't be catching the fish. The
spinnerbait bite is still strong and a 3/8 ounce blue herring double
Colorado Strike King is the hot item. Also while we are on the subject of
hot items, I want to talk about the Basstrix Swim baits. These are the
hottest baits going right now. I sell tons of these baits and have people
come back and say "Chris, I caught a few but it wasn't anything special".
After talking with them I find out that they either fished the bait wrong or
rigged the bait wrong. First thing when you rig this bait you have to have a
weighted shank and wide gap hook. There are many great brands out there but
here are some Gamakatsu, Falcon, and Owner all make hooks just for this
bait. The key to this weight shank is that it makes the bait wobble from
left to right as you reel in. Next don't just reel straight in, twitch,
jump, bounce, you know, make the bait come alive not just another piece of
plastic. It's a new year and I want everyone to become better fisherman so
make it your resolution to try new techniques or maybe improve the ones that
you say "I'm good Chris but, I might can be a little better". I know your
eye's are getting tired by reading so much but I want to tell about what I
have planned for the 2008 Fishing season. This year my goal is to help
everyone excel in their fishing techniques, which means I got tons of
seminars plan from the pros. I want to thank everyone who fished our
tournament Saturday. We had a huge 51 boat turn out and the tournament went
great. Watch out Lanier, West Point Lake is getting some large spots. We
have all the pictures on our website. I will be expanding my tackle even
more from the past years so everyone always has something new to try.
Hybrids fishing has really picked up since the rain has brought the lake up
some. Top water baits like a Zara Spook and floating Rat L Traps are great
for the schooling fish. Just look for the birds and watch your Lowrance and
look for the bait. Jigging spoons are working great also in 1/2oz -1oz
depending on how you work your spoon. Shad is always a good way to go just
make sure to use a fluorocarbon leader about 15 to 25 inches in length. Down
lake seems like the best way to go.
Crappie fishing is great says guide Bobby Wilson and they are down lining
minnows in 8 to 14 feet of water. Bobby is fishing brush piles up the lake
and on creek ledges in the channel. The jig bite should be hot here shortly
so make sure you buy your Jiffy Jigs and be ready to catch a bunch of fish.
Also make sure to check our website for the West Ga Sportsman's 2008 Crappie
Tournaments.

There are obstructions showing up as well as sandbars that no one has seen
in a number of years. The lake looks bad and we want to warn all using the
lake that they should stay in the river channel. The solar buoys are there
at night and hopefully will guide them during the day. Hopefully in the
spring, you'll be able to come down and see how incredibly beautiful this
lake actually is.
